Book Poor Jack Annotated Norton Critical Edition

Download or read book Poor Jack Annotated Norton Critical Edition written by Frederick Marryat and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Father of Modern Nautical Fiction Poor Jack takes us back to the Thames River. But, in addition to being another terrific portrait of life on that bustling waterway, it introduces us to the Greenwich Hospital, the famous hospital for injured seamen. Thomas Saunders is the son of a sailor who lost his leg at the Battle of the Nile. As a result of his father's handicap, he grew up struggling to survive as a mudlark-a ragged urchin who would scavenge the mud flats along the Thames river at low tide, looking for anything of value that could be re-sold. It was one of the worst jobs a person could have, with excrement and waste, along with the odd corpse or two, as daily companions. Despite this beginning, Saunders has a vision of somehow, someday, going from rags to riches by becoming a Thames river pilot. The story contains Marryat's characteristically brilliant descriptions of early 19th century life, especially the domestic life of the average seaman. At the same time, he doesn't forget to treat us to a variety of fascinating seafaring anecdotes. Of special note, in Chapter 17 we find the earliest known set of complete lyrics to the classic sea chanty, Spanish Ladies.

Book excerpt: An intellectual history of man's most elusive yet coveted goal. Today, we think of happiness as a natural right, but people haven't always felt this way. Historian McMahon argues that our modern belief in happiness is a recent development, the product of a revolution in human expectations carried out since the eighteenth century. He investigates that fundamental transformation by synthesizing two thousand years of politics, culture, and thought. In ancient Greek tragedy, happiness was considered a gift of the gods. During the Enlightenment men and women were first introduced to the novel prospect that they could--in fact should--be happy in this life as opposed to the hereafter. This recognition of happiness as a motivating ideal led to its consecration in the Declaration of Independence. McMahon then shows how our modern search continues to generate new forms of pleasure, but also, paradoxically, new forms of pain.--From publisher description.

Book Rethinking Joyce s Dubliners

Download or read book Rethinking Joyce s Dubliners written by Claire A. Culleton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-24 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is a critical reexamination of Joyce’s famed book of short stories, Dubliners. Despite the multifaceted critical attention Dubliners has received since its publication more than a century ago, many readers and teachers of the stories still rely on and embrace old, outdated readings that invoke metaphors of paralysis and stagnation to understand the book. Challenging these canonical notions about mobility, paralysis, identity, and gender in Joyce’s work, the ten essays here suggest that Dubliners is full of incredible movement. By embracing this paradigm shift, current and future scholars can open themselves up to the possibility of seeing that movement, maybe even noticing it for the first time, can yield surprisingly fresh twenty-first-century readings.
