Book The Other Side of Jordan

Download or read book The Other Side of Jordan written by Shirley Tankersley Gilfert and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-11 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master James, a Missouri farmer during the 1850s, wants to make sure his slaves had a better life upon his death. So when he passes away, fourteen-year-old Joe, his pap, and the rest of the family are set free. Stepping in to help, the master's brother, Doc, travels with the freed family to Iowa and lets them work on land that he owns, with the promise that one day it will be their own. But it's not long before the family learns that even though they have gained their freedom, they have not earned respect. They are taunted, harassed, and threatened. As his family struggles to maintain dignity, young Joe learns from Doc about a plan for an Underground Railroad, which would help enslaved blacks make their way north to the free states. Joe knows that he must help others fight for the freedom, however imperfect, that he's had the privilege of experiencing firsthand. But in doing so, he also knows he risks his very life. As Joe comes of age, he teams up with abolitionist preacher John Brown and others to organize the Underground Railroad in Iowa, which eventually helps hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of slaves on their way to freedom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Scholars, teachers, and general readers of To Kill a Mockingbird will find Stoner’s Boy and The Gray Ghost of real interest.” —George Ella Lyon, former Kentucky poet laureate and author of Back to the Light: Poems Mr. Stoner is bad, and it seems his son is turning out just the same. Masked and dressed all in gray, Stoner’s Boy moves like a ghost up and down the river, stealing and causing mischief. Seckatary Hawkins and his club have crossed this dangerous lad, and (to make matters worse) Briggen and the Pelham gang across the river won’t leave the ruthless thief alone: They know that he’s hidden his treasure hoard somewhere in his cliff cave lair, and they’re dead set on having it for themselves. Still, it doesn't seem that anyone can stand up to this clever foe—except maybe another newcomer in town, sharpshooter Robby Hood, who is the only person that Stoner’s Boy seems to fear. Before Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, Seckatary Hawkins and his friends from the Fair and Square Club were solving mysteries and thrilling readers with tales of adventure, loyalty, and courage. One of the biggest fans of the series was author Harper Lee, and Stoner’s Boy makes a prominent appearance in her masterpiece To Kill a Mockingbird. Now, the tales of the Fair and Square Club’s encounters with the river renegade known as the Gray Ghost are back in print and ready to ignite the imaginations of devoted fans and new readers of all ages. “Think Our Gang meets Treasure Island along a Kentucky riverbank . . . The wholesome stories espouse morals and tolerance.” —Cincinnati Enquirer

In passages of beauty and truth, the drama of a year in their lives and those of the memorable characters that move about them unfolds through the action, the rituals of work, religious observances and play. We are introduced, with deceptive simplicity, to a complete representation of existence - an enclosed world has been transformed into an Everywhere. 'McGahern brings us that tonic gift of the best fiction, the sense of truth - the sense of transparency that permits us to see imaginary lives more clearly than we see our own.' John Updike

Book excerpt: Martin Arrowsmith, the titular protagonist, grows up in a small Midwestern town where he wants to become a doctor. At medical school he meets an abrasive but brilliant professor, Gottlieb, who becomes his mentor. As Arrowsmith completes his training he begins a career practicing medicine. But, echoing Lewis’s Main Street, small-town life becomes too insular and restricting; his interest in research and not people makes him unpopular, and he decides to work in a research laboratory instead. From there Arrowsmith begins a career that hits all of the ethical quandaries that scientists and those in the medical profession encounter: everything from the ethical problem of research protocol strictness versus saving lives, to doing research for the betterment of mankind versus for turning a profit, to the politics of institutions, to the social problems of wealth and poverty. Arrowsmith struggles with these dilemmas because, like all of us, he isn’t perfect. Despite his interest in helping humanity, he has little interest in people—aside from his serial womanizing—and this makes the path of his career an even harder one to walk. He’s surrounded on all sides by icons of nobility, icons of pride, and icons of rapaciousness, each one distracting him from his calling. Though the book isn’t strictly a satire, few escape Lewis’s biting pen. He skewers everyone indiscriminately: small-town rubes, big-city blowhards, aspiring politicians, doctors of both the noble and greedy variety, hapless ivory-towered researchers, holier-than-thou neighbors, tedious gilded-age socialites, and even lazy and backwards islanders. In some ways, Arrowsmith rivals Main Street in its often-bleak view of human nature—though unlike Main Street, the good to humanity that science offers is an ultimate light at the end of the tunnel. The novel’s publication in 1925 made it one of the first serious “science” novels, exploring all aspects of the life and career of a modern scientist. Lewis was aided in the novel’s preparation by Paul de Kruif, a microbiologist and writer, whose medically-accurate contributions greatly enhance the text’s realist flavor. In 1926 Arrowsmith was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, but Lewis famously declined it. In his refusal letter, he claimed a disinterest in prizes of any kind; but the New York Times reported that those close to him say he was still angered over the Pulitzer’s last-minute snatching of the 1921 prize from Main Street in favor of giving it to The Age of Innocence.

Download or read book 13 1 written by Vladimir Weaver and published by KIMOSZ Foundation. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Weaver's new trilogy the 13+1 It is unsure if our story takes place in the distant future or remote past. The only thing certain is that 13+1 takes us to planet Mynodis. After numerous cataclysms, people start a seemingly calm period, where everyone’s work is necessary, and everybody can live a good life in relative security and recognition. But what lies under the surface? If you could live a life where you are never sick, hardly age and have the chance to live forever, what would you do for it? Would you sacrifice your whole life in return? You can get into 13 classes, where the gap between the standards of living in the lower ones and the higher ones is inconceivable for average people. Ree Vox was born into the class of the poorest. Once in life, everybody can choose between good and bad, rich and poor life. After that, there is no way to change classes. Ree decided to live a happy but humble life with his love, but nothing happens as planned. But there might be something that is worse than death! Is immortality the most one can wish for? Excitement, adventure, love, fight, and everything you can imagine. Sit down and brace yourself, it begins! ********** " It’s an understatement when I say I was astounded, when my friend Vladimir, whom I have known for not less than 15 years, announced that he had finished his science-fiction novel, and would be happy to send it to me to read. And he did so without any pomposity, with his natural phlegm. Only talented people are capable of this: they are not the slightest surprised by their extraordinary achievements. Of course, writing a book is only a considerable achievement, if it has a value, or at least it entertains. Ree Vox’s adventure in a chaotic world unknown to today’s man is exciting, moving, and captivating at the same time. The author’s creativity is mixed with deep understanding of the science-fiction world, thanks to which he makes the story plausible, maintains the reader’s attention incessantly, and at occasions, he stretches the reader’s nerves to the breaking point. Due to our friendship, it is hard to assess the book objectively, but I am convinced that I can heartily recommend the book for reading! " István Major Jr. Director of Alba Regia Symphonic Orchestra " As a fan of the fantasy genre, before reading the sci-fi novel 13+1, I felt like a camel when being offered bacon. But after reading it, I simply loved it! It’s incredibly exciting. When is the second part finished? I want Amy! :) " A bookworm " It’s so good to fly to Mynodis every morning. Yes, I looked forward to being there with Ree Vox, to experience this unique atmosphere, to taste this greatly envisioned world! I love its characters; they’ve become my acquaintances. I’d proudly fight on Ree’s side, shoulder to shoulder, and happily flirt with any of the female characters, because they are all extraordinary and beautiful… The exciting story lines, the author’s unique humour, the well-developed, graphic characters and the whole imaginary geography and technical world! … I miss it all. When can we fly again? " Sieradzan Sebastian Jerzy Head of Szivárvány Törzs Public Benefit Organisation " A great book; when reading it, you feel like you are indeed outside the Earth, and when you get out of the spell of reading, you do not at all feel like returning to the Earth. Itisan excellent way of entertainment; I recommend it to everybody. " Gábor Fidler Chief Advisor, Former School Headmaster Follow our websites!
