Download or read book The Book of Magic written by George R. R. Martin and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new anthology celebrating the witches and sorcerers of epic fantasy—featuring stories by George R. R. Martin, Scott Lynch, Megan Lindholm, and many others! Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois’s acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf . . . and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda . . . and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore . . . and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped—or misshaped—by the potent magic they seek to wield. Yet though their abilities may be godlike, these men and women remain human—some might say all too human. Such is their curse. And their glory. In these pages, seventeen of today’s top fantasy writers—including award-winners Elizabeth Bear, John Crowley, Kate Elliott, K. J. Parker, Tim Powers, and Liz Williams—cast wondrous spells that thrillingly evoke the mysterious, awesome, and at times downright terrifying worlds where magic reigns supreme: worlds as far away as forever, and as near as next door. FEATURING SIXTEEN ALL-NEW STORIES: “The Return of the Pig” by K. J. Parker “Community Service” by Megan Lindholm “Flint and Mirror” by John Crowley “The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable” by Matthew Hughes “The Biography of a Bouncing Boy Terror: Chapter Two: Jumping Jack in Love” by Ysabeau S. Wilce “Song of Fire” by Rachel Pollack “Loft the Sorcerer” by Eleanor Arnason “The Governor” by Tim Powers “Sungrazer” by Liz Williams “The Staff in the Stone” by Garth Nix “No Work of Mine” by Elizabeth Bear “Widow Maker” by Lavie Tidhar “The Wolf and the Manticore” by Greg Van Eekhout “The Devil’s Whatever” by Andy Duncan “Bloom” by Kate Elliott “The Fall and Rise of the House of the Wizard Malkuril” by Scott Lynch Plus George R. R. Martin’s classic story “A Night at the Tarn House” and an introduction by Gardner Dozois Praise for The Book of Magic “In The Book of Magic, you get everything you expect and more! Assembling seventeen great authors in one place is a difficult job but this book, with a lot of help from editor Gardner Dozois, does just that. . . . This compilation is a treat for any who love a good fantasy tale.”—Geeks of Doom

Download or read book One Way Ticket written by Robert Currie and published by Coteau Books. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What begins as a look back at a different time in history quickly takes a dark turn in Bob Currie’s latest collection. Embodying a variety of characters, often in different voices – both those of well-known classic poets as well as the voices of Saskatchewan poets past and present – Currie ponders the collective human experience. With razor-sharp precision and telltale imagery, these poems explore domestic and public life: bad marriages, infidelity, poverty, gun violence, and in a final section, death – and how these experiences change (or don’t) between one generation and the next. Currie expertly combines seemingly innocuous poems – catching fish, discovering false breasts in a dresser – with more sinister and somber poems – murder, hiding from a gunman outside of a grocery store, bearing witness to the death of loved ones – with poignant candor.

He attracts all kinds of people on his journey but mostly con artists, thieves, and drug addicts. They call him the sucker because of his desire to feed people and give his belongings to people who ask him for them. Then there is one drug addict who is out of the same neighbourhood as the boyand who knows of the boys weaknesses. He knows how to exploit it and figures that if the boy is free with his money by giving it away, then he could claim 10 per cent from the boys earnings and feed his habits. But the boy, who doesnt hold with drugs and liquor, refuses. He has better uses for his money. The boy is now streetwise and has been living outdoors for some time. He takes evasive measures and disappears from the drug addict. He travels abroad, and years later, he marries and settles down in London. By some extraordinary bad luck, the drug addict tracks him down and makes his demand, but Lynx Ferry wont budge. The addict then teams up with a couple of local toughs, kidnaps Ferrys children, murders them, and disappears. After many years of searching to bring the murderers to justice, which proves futile, Lynx uses the power of the mind to draw them to him. Then in the frozen wasteland of the snowcapped Arctic, the subliminal message draws them out, and Lynx Ferry has his say.

Download or read book You Made Me Love You written by John Edgar Wideman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A powerful and “stunning” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) selection of the best of John Edgar Wideman’s short stories over his fifty-year career, representing the wide range of his intellectual and artistic pursuits. When John Edgar Wideman won the PEN Malamud Award in 2019, he joined a list of esteemed writers—from Eudora Welty to George Saunders—all of whom are acknowledged masters of the short story. Wideman’s commitment to short fiction has been lifelong, and here he gathers a representative selection from throughout his career, stories that “have a wary, brooding spirit, a lonely intelligence…[and] air the problem of consciousness, including the fragile contingency of our existence” (The New York Times). Wideman’s stories are grounded in the streets and the people of Homewood, the Pittsburgh neighborhood of his childhood, but they range far beyond there, to the small western towns of Wyoming and historic Philadelphia, the contemporary world and the ancient past. He explores the interior lives of his characters, and the external pressures that shape them. These stories are as intellectually intricate as they are rich with the language and character. “Wideman has been compared to William Faulkner and James Baldwin…[these] prove that he is every bit as masterful a cartographer of the American spirit as his forebears" (Esquire). Comprised of thirty-five stories drawn from past collections (American Histories, Briefs, God’s Gym, All Stories Are True, Fever, and Damballah), and an introductory essay by the National Book Critics Circle board member and scholar Walton Muyumba, this volume of Wideman’s selected stories celebrates the lifelong significance of this major American writer’s essential contribution to a form—illuminating the ways that he has made it his own. “If there were any doubts Wideman belongs to the American canon, this puts them to bed” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).
