Download or read book How the Soldier Repairs the Gramophone written by Sasa Stanisic and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A brilliant debut novel” about a young Bosnian War refugee who finds the secret to survival in language and stories (Los Angeles Times). For Aleksandar Krsmanović, Grandpa Slavko’s stories endow life in Višegrad with a kaleidoscopic brilliance. Neighbors, friends, and family past and present take on a mythic quality; the River Drina courses through town like the pulse of life itself. So when his grandfather dies suddenly, Aleksandar promises to carry on the tradition. But then soldiers invade Višegrad—a town previously unconscious of racial and religious divides—and it’s no longer important that Aleksandar is the best magician in the nonaligned states; suddenly it is important to have the right last name and to convince the soldiers that Asija, the Muslim girl who turns up in his apartment building, is his sister. Alive with the magic of childhood, the surreality of war and exile, and the power of language, every page of this glittering novel thrums with the joy of storytelling. “Wildly inventive.” —San Francisco Chronicle “Poignant and hauntingly beautiful.” —The Village Voice “A funny, heartbreaking, beautifully written novel.” —The Seattle Times

Download or read book Charting Transnational Fields written by Christian Schmidt-Wellenburg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume provides a field-analytical methodology for researching knowledge-based sociopolitical processes of transnationalization. Drawing on seminal work by Pierre Bourdieu, we apply concepts of practice, habitus, and field to phenomena such as cross-national social trajectories, international procedures of evaluation, standardization, and certification, or supranational political structures. These transnational phenomena form part of general political struggles that legitimate social relationships in and beyond the nation-state. Part 1 on methodological foundations discusses the consequences of Bourdieu’s epistemology and methodology for theorizing and investigating transnational phenomena. The contributions show the importance of field-theoretical concepts for post-national insights. Part 2 on investigating political fields presents exemplary case studies in diverse research areas such as colonial imperialism, international academic rankings, European policy fields, and local school policy. While focusing on their research objects, the contributions also give an insight into the mechanisms involved in processes of transnationalization. The volume is an invitation for sociologists, political scientists, and scholars in adjacent research areas to engage with reflexive and relational research practice and to further develop field-theoretical thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lionel Messi poses for a series of never-before-published photographs taken by Domenico Dolce especially for this unique book. Rising from Rosario, an Argentine town in Santa Fe Province, "Leo" has become the foremost soccer player in the world. He is the forward for FC Barcelona and the Argentine national team, as well as the winner of the Ballon d’Or for four years in a row since 2009. The portraits selected for this project disclose an unconventional Messi, very different from the one seen at matches. As a matter of fact, the book showcases the star player’s private, more intimate life captured by Domenico Dolce’s creativity and unfailing eye. The photographs will be printed on special gold and silver paper. The images lay bare the emotions, moods, and passions of this young athlete, who has succeeded in bravely overcoming adversity in order to fulfill his dream: to become the number one among the world’s top soccer players.

Download or read book Zealots for Souls written by Anne Huijbers and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zealots for souls draws attention to the impact of the Observant reforms within the Order of Preachers, and ambitiously stirs up a broad scope of questions pertaining to the institutional narratives produced within the order between c. 1388 and 1517. Through the narratives and the forms of remembrance they fostered, the author traces the development of contemporary characteristics of the Dominican self-understanding. The book shows the fluid boundaries between the genres (order chronicles, convent chronicles, collective biographies), highlights the interplay between the narrative and the intended audience, addresses the complex question of authorship, and assesses the indebtedness of 'modern' (printed) narratives to older chronicles or biographical collections. The book demonstrates that the majority of the extant institutional narratives were written by Observant Dominicans, who strived for the internal reform of their order. They wrote history to justify their own reform agenda and therefore produced invariably partisan chronicles. The work's method is widely applicable and contributes to further reassessment of institutional narratives as sources for the analysis of religious and intellectual transformations.
Download or read book The Crisis of Globalization written by Patrick Diamond and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-29 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the effects of economic openness and technological change have fuelled dissatisfaction with established political systems and led to new forms of political populism that exploit the economic and political resentment created by globalization. This shift in politics was evident in the decision by UK voters to leave the European Union in June 2016, the November 2016 election of Donald Trump to the presidency of the United States, as well as the rise of populist movements on left and right throughout much of Europe. To many voters, the economy appears to be broken. Conventional politics is failing. Parties of the left and centre-left have struggled to forge a convincing response to this new phase of globalization in the aftermath of the 2008 crisis. This book examines the challenges that the new era of globalization poses for progressive parties and movements across the world. It brings together leading thinkers and experts including Andrew Gamble, Jeffry Frieden and Vivien Schmidt to debate the structural causes and political consequences of this new wave of globalization.
