Download or read book Pondering Everyday Life written by Robert A. Stebbins and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pivot provides a conceptual statement of an approach to understanding the interrelationships of work, leisure, and “chore” activities in daily life, and how they are managed in practice. Drawing on the sociology of everyday life, Stebbins puts forward the notion of Pondering Everyday Life (PEA), a thinking process/activity in which we routinely understand, coordinate, organize, remember, and compare our involvements in work, leisure, and non-work obligations. This perspective demonstrates how the interrelation between these three domains helps bring meaning and continuity to everyday life. As a micro- and meso-level conception that takes into account social, cultural and historic context, Stebbins contemplates how and what PEA can tell us about an individual’s view of their own life. Pondering Everyday Life will be of interest to students and scholars across leisure studies, social psychology, and the sociology of leisure and work.

Download or read book Time Consumption and Everyday Life written by Elizabeth Shove and published by Berg. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has material civilization spun out of control, becoming too fast for our own well-being and that of the planet? This book confronts these anxieties and examines the changing rhythms and temporal organization of everyday life. How do people handle hurriedness, burn-out and stress? Are slower forms of consumption viable? This volume brings together international experts from geography, sociology, history, anthropology and philosophy. In case studies covering the United States, Asia and Europe, contributors follow routines and rhythms, their emotional and political dynamics and show how they are anchored in material culture and everyday practice. Running themes of the book are questions of coordination and disruption; cycles and seasons; and the interplay between power and freedom, and between material and natural forces. The result is a volume that brings studies of practice, temporality and material culture together to open up a new intellectual agenda.

Download or read book The big story falls apart written by Glenn Martin and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The big story is the story that sits behind all our other stories. It is the story that provides the stable context for our lives. The author describes, in first-person perspective, what it means when the big story falls apart. He grew up in the 1960s, so there were plenty of socially based reasons for feeling that all the certainties were crumbling. And there were personal reasons too. An inability to even choose a career. Part 1 is The Disintegration. It finds the author leaving the city. Fleeing. But he finds a place to settle, in a valley that has walls of refuge., a place of retreat. It is good enough. He is telling this story as it happened, that memory returns to him after so long. He gives up books, he takes up gardening. He never stops thinking about the big story. But he ventures back in to a town, to a job, a tumultuous job that required him to learn the art of war. Books come back in, and music. Eventually there is a return to the city, wondering if it will be different. Part 2 is The Renewing. He says he is on a campaign to find the roots of the world tree. Writing about human resources and training in the day time, finding peace and joy in music. But he knows what he is finding in the stories, when his experiences turn into story. It is love, and morals. And some of the stories are in song. Part 3 is Onward. The author has to come back to the present, but he is called away by Mu, the chanter who has been here before. Mu's desire is to dance at the music festival, and we think he intends to stay, but he comes and is gone, with just a nod to the tawny frogmouth sitting in the tree. Part 4 is Reframing. The author is older. He is making principles. Now he knows that heaven and earth are working together. At the end, the story goes on. The energy flows in all directions.
Download or read book Emerging Critical Scholarship in Education written by Carol Mutch and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctoral journey is fraught with stops and starts, crossroads and blind alleys, surprises and epiphanies. All successful doctoral students navigate a pathway through these events to reach their final destination. Navigating the Doctoral Journey explores examples of these routes in ways that both honour individual stories and highlight the broader issues of uniting emergent research practices with doctoral candidates’ individual reflexive projects. All the doctoral candidates included in this book work with critical topics, theories and methods within the field of education; they face particular challenges – and rewards – when pursuing work that will meet institutional and disciplinary expectations of “good” doctoral-level research. For them, the doctoral process is required to culminate in more than the award of a qualification. Their imperative is to demonstrate mastery of the disciplinary norms, whilst simultaneously challenging dominant models and making authentic contributions to the benefit of broader society. Navigating the Doctoral Journey addresses the isolation and challenges of what it means to conduct critical doctoral research within a highly contested domain of knowledge. This is not a simplistic self-help guide to clearly map a proven route to doctoral success, rather the book provides a range of possible answers to the questions of how candidates experience doctoral studies, what is “critical” about each contributor’s research, and how this affects what each person does as he or she researches.

Download or read book The Journey is the Destination written by Dan Eldon and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time he was twenty-two, Dan Eldon had led a relief mission across Africa; worked as a graphic designer in New York; studied (intermittently) at four colleges; travelled through Europe, Africa, Japan, and the United States; founded a charity for Mozambiquan refugees; directed a film; written a book; started up his own photography business; and become a photojournalist for Reuters news agency, covering the famine and civil war in Somalia. There, in 1993, he was killed in an eruption of mob violence while on assignment. In a world of rules and regularity, Eldon was a renegade, a risk-taker, and an adventurer. His is no ordinary journal; it is an astonishing collage of photos, drawings, words, maps, and clippings that reveals his strange and vivid life. The Journey is the Destination is at once the vision of an artist in his prime and the unrestrained outpourings of a young man just beginning to live.
