Download or read book Pomona s Harvest written by H. Frederic Janson and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 1996 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Roman mythology, fruit was believed to be a gift from the goddess Pomona, and the study of fruit culture is therefore called pomology. Pomona's Harvest is an illustrated in-depth review, never attempted before, of the European literature dealing with fruit from antiquity to the Industrial Revolution. Frederic Janson draws readers into this arcane yet fascinating subject by placing it against the background of history, showing the connections among pomology, social history, and the history of ideas. Janson divides the first part of Pomona's Harvest into specific periods: antiquity and the Middle Ages; orchardist authors to Louis XIV; the Jeffersonian literary approach to fruit; Enlightenment and Revolution; fruit books for the bourgeoisie; and more. Noblemen, clerics, estate gardeners, lawyers, scholars, and poets render their individual pomological theories. The second part of the book is a detailed bibliography that describes over 600 fruit-related works and critically abstracts their contents. An 8-page color spread and 139 black-and-white illustrations delightfully augment the text, each one telling a story about the nature of the period.

Book Apples and Orchards since the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Apples and Orchards since the Eighteenth Century written by Joanna Crosby and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showing how the history of the apple goes far beyond the orchard and into the social, cultural and technological developments of Britain and the USA, this book takes an interdisciplinary approach to reveal the importance of the apple as a symbol of both tradition and innovation. From the 18th century in Britain, technology innovation in fruit production and orchard management resulted in new varieties of apples being cultivated and consumed, while the orchard became a representation of stability. In America orchards were contested spaces, as planting seedling apple trees allowed settlers to lay a claim to land. In this book Joanna Crosby explores how apples and orchards have reflected the social, economic and cultural landscape of their times. From the association between English apples and 'English' virtues of plain speaking, hard work and resultant high-quality produce, to practices of wassailing highlighting the effects of urbanisation and the decline of country ways and customs, Apples and Orchards from the Eighteenth Century shows how this everyday fruit provides rich insights into a time of significant social change.

  • Author : Mark Johnston
  • Publisher : Windgather Press
  • Release : 2021-08-02
  • ISBN : 1911188895
  • Pages : 939 pages

Download or read book The Tree Experts written by Mark Johnston and published by Windgather Press. This book was released on 2021-08-02 with total page 939 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees are now in the public eye as never before. The threat of tree diseases, the felling of street trees, and the challenge of climate change are just some of the issues that have put trees in the media spotlight. At the same time, the trees in our parks, gardens, and streets are a vital resource that can deliver environmental, social, and economic benefits that make our towns and cities attractive, green, and healthy places. Ever since Roman times when amenity trees were first planted in Britain, caring for those trees has required specialist skills. This is mainly because of the challenges of successfully integrating large trees into the urban environment and the risks involved in working with them, often at height and in close proximity to people, buildings and roads. But who are the people with the specialist expertise to care for our amenity trees? While professionals such as horticulturists, landscape architects, conservationists and foresters have a role to play, it is the arboriculturists who are the ‘tree experts’. For centuries arboriculture was often synonymous with forestry or considered an aspect of horticulture, until it emerged in the nineteenth century as a separate discipline. There are now some 22,000 people employed in Britain’s arboricultural industry, including practical tree surgeons and arborists, local authority tree officers, and arboricultural consultants. This is the first book to trace the history of Britain’s professional tree experts, from the Roman arborator to the modern chartered arboriculturist. It also discusses the influences from continental Europe and North America that have helped to shape British arboriculture over the centuries. The Tree Experts will have particular appeal to those interested in the natural and built environment, heritage landscapes, social history, and the history of gardening.

Book Gender and Germanness

Download or read book Gender and Germanness written by Patricia Herminghouse and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 1998-02-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultural Studies have been preoccupied with questions of national identity and cultural representations. At the same time, feminist studies have insisted upon the entanglement of gender with issues of nation, class, and ethnicity. Developments in the wake of German unification demand a reassessment of the nexus of gender, Germanness and nationhood. The contributors to this volume pursue these strands of the cultural debate in German history, literature, visual arts, and language over a period of three hundred years in sections devoted to History and the Canon, Visual Culture, Germany and Her "Others," and Language and Power. Book excerpt: Goddesses explores the ancient wisdom of the goddesses to help you reconnect with the old ways in a modern context. The goddesses are presented in their elements, in their heavenly bodies, or as symbols of the journey of life to give support, provoke us to explore new ideas and challenges, and to bring balance to our lives. The folklore, myth, and traditional associations of the goddesses will inspire you on your journey. Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano, demonstrates that volatile fire energy is life-giving and creative but needs to have focus. Water goddesses such as Isis, Sedna, and Yemaya offer us wisdom in times of stress and grief. They help us flow in the right direction and remind us that water supports us. The sun goddesses lead us through our feelings as well as our intellect to our divine spark—the sun within us. If our lives are stormy, we can take comfort from the story of the sun goddess, Ama-terasu-o-mi-kami, and find peace within ourselves. Cerridwen, the Celtic goddess of poetry, is a source of wisdom, inspiration, and creativity. The reflections, meditations, rituals, chants, and exercises in this book will help you bring about the changes you wish for in your life. Some of the exercises are for you to undertake alone; others you can share with friends, family, and children. Let the goddesses guide and inspire you!

Book The Language of Fruit

Download or read book The Language of Fruit written by Liz Bellamy and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Language of Fruit, Liz Bellamy explores how poets, playwrights, and novelists from the Restoration to the Romantic era represented fruit and fruit trees in a period that saw significant changes in cultivation techniques, the expansion of the range of available fruit varieties, and the transformation of the mechanisms for their exchange and distribution. Although her principal concern is with the representation of fruit within literary texts and genres, she nevertheless grounds her analysis in the consideration of what actually happened in the gardens and orchards of the past. As Bellamy progresses through sections devoted to specific literary genres, three central "characters" come to the fore: the apple, long a symbol of natural abundance, simplicity, and English integrity; the orange, associated with trade and exchange until its "naturalization" as a British resident; and the pineapple, often figured as a cossetted and exotic child of indulgence epitomizing extravagant luxury. She demonstrates how the portrayal of fruits within literary texts was complicated by symbolic associations derived from biblical and classical traditions, often identifying fruit with female temptation and sexual desire. Looking at seventeenth-century poetry, Restoration drama, eighteenth-century georgic, and the Romantic novel, as well as practical writings on fruit production and husbandry, Bellamy shows the ways in which the meanings and inflections that accumulated around different kinds of fruit related to contemporary concepts of gender, class, and race. Examining the intersection of literary tradition and horticultural innovation, The Language of Fruit traces how writers from Andrew Marvell to Jane Austen responded to the challenges posed by the evolving social, economic, and symbolic functions of fruit over the long eighteenth century.
