Download or read book The Witch of Exmoor written by Margaret Drabble and published by HMH. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year: “Part social satire, part thriller, and entirely clever” (Elle). It is a midsummer’s evening in the English countryside, and the three grown Palmer children are coming to the end of an enjoyable meal in the company of their partners and offspring. From this pleasant vantage point they play a dinner-party game: What kind of society would you be willing to accept if you didn’t know your place in it? But the abstract question of justice, like all their family conversations, is eventually brought back to the more pressing problem of their eccentric mother, Frieda, the famous writer, who has abandoned them and her old life, and gone to live alone in Exmoor. Frieda has always been a powerful and puzzling figure, a monster mother with a mysterious past. What is she plotting against them now? Has some inconvenient form of political correctness led her to favor her enchanting half-Guyanese grandson? What will she do with her money? Is she really writing her memoirs? And why has she disappeared? Has the dark spirit of Exmoor finally driven her mad? The Witch of Exmoor brilliantly interweaves high comedy and personal tragedy, unraveling the story of a family whose comfortable, rational lives, both public and private, are about to be violently disrupted by a succession of sinister, messy events. “Leisurely and mischievous,” it is a dazzling, wickedly gothic tale of a British matriarch, her three grasping children, and the perils of self-absorption (The New Yorker). “As meticulous as Jane Austen, as deadly as Evelyn Waugh.” —Los Angeles Times

Download or read book The Country Diary Book of Flowers written by Carol Petelin and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most appealing, as well as one of the easiest, ways of bringing a breath of summer in to the home is to use dried and pressed flowers to make an almost endless variety of attractive arrangements and designs. Pot pourri, made with colorful, fragrant plants and carefully selected herbs and spices, recreate evocative scents to remind us of Nature's fragrance. Carol Petelin, author of the successful The Creative Guide to Dried Flowers, has drawn on her wealth of experience to provide the ultimate guide to drying and using flowers, plants, and herbs in a myriad of creative ways. First, she describes plants that can be most successfully grown, even by those with limited garden space, and explains how to best harvest and dry them. The next section covers the art of dried flower arranging. There is advice on working with different combinations of color and form to create arrangements in containers, bouquets, posies, garlands, and swags. She tells how to gather and press flowers and herbs and offers a variety of imaginative projects for them. The final section is devoted to pot pourri. The author includes recipes for deliciously fragrant mixtures and describes how pot pourri, scented flowers, and spices can be used to make many delightfully fragranced items. There is a list of sources for herbs and essential oils. Lavishly illustrated throughout with Simon McBride's color photographs and decorated with some of Edith Holden's own drawings from The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady and The Nature Notes of an Edwardian Lady, The Country Diary Book of Flowers will inspire all those who wish to practice the art of dried flower arranging and to make unusual and attractive gifts for their homes and friends.

Download or read book Reading Green in Early Modern England written by Leah Knight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Green in early modern England did not mean what it does today; but what did it mean? Unveiling various versions and interpretations of green, this book offers a cultural history of a color that illuminates the distinctive valences greenness possessed in early modern culture. While treating green as a panacea for anything from sore eyes to sick minds, early moderns also perceived verdure as responsive to their verse, sympathetic to their sufferings, and endowed with surprising powers of animation. Author Leah Knight explores the physical and figurative potentials of green as they were understood in Renaissance England, including some that foreshadow our paradoxical dependence on and sacrifice of the green world. Ranging across contexts from early modern optics and olfaction to horticulture and herbal health care, this study explores a host of human encounters with the green world: both the impressions we make upon it and those it leaves with us. The first two chapters consider the value placed on two ways of taking green into early modern bodies and minds-by seeing it and breathing it in-while the next two address the manipulation of greenery by Orphic poets and medicinal herbalists as well as grafters and graffiti artists. A final chapter suggests that early modern modes of treating green wounds might point toward a new kind of intertextual ecology of reading and writing. Reading Green in Early Modern England mines many pages from the period - not literally but tropically, metaphorically green - that cultivate a variety of unexpected meanings of green and the atmosphere and powers it exuded in the early modern world.
