Book excerpt: Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Biocomposites and Bionanocomposites Serves as a one-stop reference resource for important research accomplishments in the area of polyvinyl alcohol-based biocomposites and bionanocomposites. Many recent research accomplishments in the area of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-based biocomposites and bionanocomposites are summarized in this book. In it, the editors discuss as many topics as possible on the most recent state-of-the-art developments regarding these biocomposites and bionanocomposites, the challenges faced when using them, and their future prospects. In addition to providing a biodegradation study of them, their significance and applications are also discussed, along with practical steps toward their commercialization. Moreover, PVA/cellulose-based and PVA/starch-based biocomposites and bionanocomposites are discussed, along with the biomedical applications of PVA-based composites and nanocomposites, and PVA-based hybrid interpolymeric complexes and their applications. Audience This book will be a very valuable reference source for polymer researchers, materials scientists, biochemists, engineers, graduate and postgraduate students working on polymers, composites, and nanocomposites, especially in the area of polyvinyl alcohol-based bionanocomposites.

Book Polyvinyl Alcohol Halloysite Nanotube Bionanocomposites as Biodegradable Packaging Materials

Download or read book Polyvinyl Alcohol Halloysite Nanotube Bionanocomposites as Biodegradable Packaging Materials written by Zainab Waheed Abdullah and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the preparation and characterisation of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/ halloysite nanotube (HNT) bionanocomposite films with different HNT contents for potential use in food packaging. It examines the effect of material composition and nanofiller content on mechanical, thermal and optical properties in relation to their morphological structures, and also comprehensively describes the water resistance, biodegradation and migration rates of such bionanocomposites, as well as their barrier properties in terms of water vapour transmission, and water vapour, air and oxygen permeabilities. Further, this book discusses the use of Nielsen model and Cussler model to predict the relative permeability of bionanocomposites, demonstrating that Nielsen model is more effective and in better agreement with experimental data obtained. Lastly, it discusses the application of bionanocomposite films in food packaging to prolong the shelf life of freshly cut avocados and peaches.

Book excerpt: For a number of years, plastic wastes have been accumulating at such a rate that there are now huge environmental concerns with their disposal. Options such as landfill and incineration have not been well received by the public, or indeed government legislation, and focus is now firmly upon the use of biodegradable alternatives for mass applications. One material that has been considered for mass application has been polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). To date, the use of this material has been confined to comparativey low technology applications such as paper coatings and fibre sizing, which rely upon its inherently poor resistance to moisture to initiate degradation and ultimate disposal. This Rapra Review Report provides a concise introduction to polyvinyl alcohol - the material itself, the processing and applications, and also potential future directions for PVOH.

Book Fast Scanning Calorimetry

Download or read book Fast Scanning Calorimetry written by Christoph Schick and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decades, the scan rate range of calorimeters has been extended tremendously at the high end, from approximately 10 up to 10 000 000 °C/s and more. The combination of various calorimeters and the newly-developed Fast Scanning Calorimeters (FSC) now span 11 orders of magnitude, by which many processes can be mimicked according to the time scale(s) of chemical and physical transitions occurring during cooling, heating and isothermal stays in case heat is exchanged. This not only opens new areas of research on polymers, metals, pharmaceuticals and all kinds of substances with respect to glass transition, crystallization and melting phenomena, it also enables in-depth study of metastability and reorganization of samples on an 1 to 1000 ng scale. In addition, FSC will become a crucial tool for understanding and optimization of processing methods at high speeds like injection molding. The book resembles the state-of-the art in Thermal Analysis & Calorimetry and is an excellent starting point for both experts and newcomers in the field.
