Book Polymer Process Engineering

Download or read book Polymer Process Engineering written by R. Griskey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are ubiquitous and pervasive in industry, science, and technology. These giant molecules have great significance not only in terms of products such as plastics, films, elastomers, fibers, adhesives, and coatings but also less ob viously though none the less importantly in many leading industries (aerospace, electronics, automotive, biomedical, etc.). Well over half the chemists and chem ical engineers who graduate in the United States will at some time work in the polymer industries. If the professionals working with polymers in the other in dustries are taken into account, the overall number swells to a much greater total. It is obvious that knowledge and understanding of polymers is essential for any engineer or scientist whose professional activities involve them with these macromolecules. Not too long ago, formal education relating to polymers was very limited, indeed, almost nonexistent. Speaking from a personal viewpoint, I can recall my first job after completing my Ph.D. The job with E.I. Du Pont de Nemours dealt with polymers, an area in which I had no university training. There were no courses in polymers offered at my alma mater. My experience, incidentally, was the rule and not the exception.

Book Polymer Engineering Science and Viscoelasticity

Download or read book Polymer Engineering Science and Viscoelasticity written by Hal F. Brinson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-24 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a unified mechanics and materials perspective on polymers: both the mathematics of viscoelasticity theory as well as the physical mechanisms behind polymer deformation processes. Introductory material on fundamental mechanics is included to provide a continuous baseline for readers from all disciplines. Introductory material on the chemical and molecular basis of polymers is also included, which is essential to the understanding of the thermomechanical response. This self-contained text covers the viscoelastic characterization of polymers including constitutive modeling, experimental methods, thermal response, and stress and failure analysis. Example problems are provided within the text as well as at the end of each chapter. New to this edition: · One new chapter on the use of nano-material inclusions for structural polymer applications and applications such as fiber-reinforced polymers and adhesively bonded structures · Brings up-to-date polymer production and sales data and equipment and procedures for evaluating polymer characterization and classification · The work serves as a comprehensive reference for advanced seniors seeking graduate level courses, first and second year graduate students, and practicing engineers

Book Principles of Polymer Processing

Download or read book Principles of Polymer Processing written by Zehev Tadmor and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thoroughly revised edition of the classic text on polymer processing The Second Edition brings the classic text on polymer processing thoroughly up to date with the latest fundamental developments in polymer processing, while retaining the critically acclaimed approach of the First Edition. Readers are provided with the complete panorama of polymer processing, starting with fundamental concepts through the latest current industry practices and future directions. All the chapters have been revised and updated, and four new chapters have been added to introduce the latest developments. Readers familiar with the First Edition will discover a host of new material, including: * Blend and alloy microstructuring * Twin screw-based melting and chaotic mixing mechanisms * Reactive processing * Devolatilization--theory, mechanisms, and industrial practice * Compounding--theory and industrial practice * The increasingly important role of computational fluid mechanics * A systematic approach to machine configuration design The Second Edition expands on the unique approach that distinguishes it from comparative texts. Rather than focus on specific processing methods, the authors assert that polymers have a similar experience in any processing machine and that these experiences can be described by a set of elementary processing steps that prepare the polymer for any of the shaping methods. On the other hand, the authors do emphasize the unique features of particular polymer processing methods and machines, including the particular elementary step and shaping mechanisms and geometrical solutions. Replete with problem sets and a solutions manual for instructors, this textbook is recommended for undergraduate and graduate students in chemical engineering and polymer and materials engineering and science. It will also prove invaluable for industry professionals as a fundamental polymer processing analysis and synthesis reference.

Download or read book Polymer Processing written by Donald G. Baird and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 1998-04-22 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer Processing: Principles and Design presents the background required to design processes for thermoplastics. Often engineers are hired by the polymer industry to develop and design processes for thermoplastics, to design polymer processing machinery, to develop processes for new polymers, and to optimize existing processes. However, at best, they receive only a little training in polymer science and no training in the design of polymer processes. This book emphasizes the fundamental concepts that allow the student and the practicing engineer to carry out practical design decisions. While most books leave the student with equations only, Polymer Processing: Principles and Design provides the numerical methods required to solve the equations using the personal computer and easy-to-use IMSL numerical subroutines, and ensures a solid foundation in the principles underlying the design of polymer processing techniques.

Book Principles of Polymer Engineering

Download or read book Principles of Polymer Engineering written by N. G. McCrum and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers have an important role in manufacturing and their engineering properties form an important part of any course in engineering. This revised and updated second edition develops the principles of polymer engineering from the underlying materials science, and is aimed at undergraduateand postgraduate students in engineering and materials science. The opening chapters explain why plastics and rubbers have such distinctive properties and how these are affected by temperature, strain rate, and other factors. The book then explores how these properties can be exploited within theseproperty constraints to produce functional components. Major changes for this second edition include an introductory chapter on the environmental impact of polymers, emphasizing the important issues, and substantially revised sections on fracture testing for toughened polymers, yield, processing, heat transfer, and polymer forming.
