Book Methods for Polymer Molecular Weight Measurement

Download or read book Methods for Polymer Molecular Weight Measurement written by Thomas M. Schmitt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BINDERS USED IN COMMERCIAL COATINGS are organic polymers, the molecular weights of which greatly influence the properties of the final coating [1]. As a necessary result of the manufacturing processes, synthetic polymers are mixtures of compounds of similar molecular structure but varying molecular weight. For an exact understanding of the system, one must know the molecular weight and weight (or mole) fraction of each species, in other words, the molecular weight distribution. For many practical purposes, an average value of molecular weight suffices. The final cured paint film is a cross-linked system resembling a single massive molecule, where the concept of molecular weight has little meaning. Molecular weight determination is thus applied only to coating formulation ingredients. Many procedures have been used to determine molecular weight. We limit our discussion to the most practical methods, for which commercial instrumentation is available at reasonable price. Archaic methods and research methods are omitted, as are those techniques which are suitable for determination only of low molecular weight compounds.

Book Rapid Methods to Estimate the Molecular Weight Distributions of Polymers

Download or read book Rapid Methods to Estimate the Molecular Weight Distributions of Polymers written by Richard G. Griskey and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The methods were cumulative precipitation fractionation, swelling and turbidometric titration. The most rapid and precise of these was found to be turbidometric titration.

Book Fundamentals of Polymerization

Download or read book Fundamentals of Polymerization written by Broja Mohan Mandal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last twenty years, the field of the chemistry of polymerization witnessed enormous growth through the development of new concepts, catalysts, processes etc. Examples are: non classical living polymerizations (group transfer polymerization, living carbocationic polymerization, living radical polymerization and living ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP)); new catalysts (metallocenes and late transition metal catalysts for stereospecific polymerization, Schrock and Grubbs catalyst for ROMP among others) and new processes such as miniemulsion, microemulsion polymerization and dispersion polymerization (in polar solvents). Apart from the developments in the chemistry of polymerization, methods have been developed for the evaluation of highly reliable rate constants of propagation in radical as well as cationic polymerization. All these have revolutionized the field of synthetic polymer chemistry. In the book, fundamentals of both the new and old polymerization chemistry have been dealt with. The new chemistry has been given nearly equal space along with the old.

Download or read book Polymer Fractionation written by Frieder Francuskiewicz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractionation of polymers via solubility has been a well known method in polymer characterization for a long time. The original object of analytical fractionations, the determination of the molecular weight distribution, is nowadays achieved more efficiently and conveniently by chromatographic methods. However, fractionation procedures, which were developed in great diversity, remain up~to-date and essential for obtaining preparative fractions with narrow distributions. Such fractions are wanted increasingly for the investigation of true structure-property relationships which are mostly influ~ enced by distributions of molecular weight or other parameters such as branching or chemical composition. Literature on the field of polymer fractionation is extensive and several reviews exist. However, there is a lack of systematically methodical instruc tions for carrying-out of diverse fractionation procedures. This volume repre sents an attempt to reduce this deficiency and is focussed on practical aspects of fractionation procedures. This laboratory manual is intended for polymer chemists, physicists, and technicians, for students of polymer science, and skilled laboratory assistants, all of whom are not dealing directly with fractionation but are in need of fractions to carry out further investigations.

Book Polymer Characterization

Download or read book Polymer Characterization written by Dan Campbell and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discerning the properties of polymers and polymer-based materials requires a good understanding of characterization. This revised and updated text provides a comprehensive survey of characterization methods within its simple, concise chapters. Polymer Characterization: Physical Techniques, provides an overview of a wide variety of characterization methods, which makes it an excellent textbook and reference. It starts with a description of basic polymer science, providing a solid foundation from which to understand the key physical characterization techniques. The authors explain physical principles without heavy theory and give special emphasis to the application of the techniques to polymers, with plenty of illustrations. Topics covered include molecular weight determination, molecular and structural characterization by spectroscopic techniques, morphology and structural characterization by microscopy and diffraction, and thermal analysis. This edition contains a new chapter on surface analysis as well as some revised problems and solutions. The concise treatment of each topic offers even those with little prior knowledge of the subject an accessible source to relevant, simple descriptions in a well-organized format.
