Book Recent Developments in Polymer Research

Download or read book Recent Developments in Polymer Research written by Anthony V. Hopper and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers are substances containing a large number of structural units joined by the same type of linkage. These substances often form into a chain-like structure. Starch, cellulose, and rubber all possess polymeric properties. Today, the polymer industry has grown to be larger than the aluminium, copper and steel industries combined. Polymers already have a range of applications that far exceeds that of any other class of material available to man. Current applications extend from adhesives, coatings, foams, and packaging materials to textile and industrial fibres, elastomers, and structural plastics. Polymers are also used for most composites, electronic devices, biomedical devices, optical devices, and precursors for many newly developed high-tech ceramics. This book presents leading-edge research in this rapidly-changing and evolving field.

Book The Polysiloxanes

    Book Details:
  • Author : James E. Mark
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2015-03-11
  • ISBN : 0190266457
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book The Polysiloxanes written by James E. Mark and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-11 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polysiloxanes are the most studied inorganic and semi-inorganic polymers because of their many medical and commercial uses. The Si-O backbone endows polysiloxanes with intriguing properties: the strength of the Si-O bond imparts considerable thermal stability, and the nature of the bonding imparts low surface free energy. Prostheses, artificial organs, objects for facial reconstruction, vitreous substitutes in the eyes, and tubing take advantage of the stability and pliability of polysiloxanes. Artificial skin, contact lenses, and drug delivery systems utilize their high permeability. Such biomedical applications have led to biocompatibility studies on the interactions of polysiloxanes with proteins, and there has been interest in modifying these materials to improve their suitability for general biomedical application. Polysiloxanes examines novel aspects of polysiloxane science and engineering, including properties, work in progress, and important unsolved problems. The volume, with ten comprehensive chapters, examines the history, preparation and analysis, synthesis, characterization, and applications of these polymeric materials.

Book Polydimethylsiloxane

Download or read book Polydimethylsiloxane written by Philip N. Carlsen and published by . This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polydimethylsiloxane is a non-conducting, silicone-based elastomer that is of widespread interest due to its flexibility and ease of micromolding for the rapid prototyping of microdevices and systems. Polydimethylsiloxane: Structure and Applications discusses the results of electric investigations of onion-like carbon (OLC)/polydimethysiloxane composites addressing very wide frequency and temperature ranges.Several kinds of devices for the observation of the behaviour of biological cells are discussed: micro-ridges, micro-grooves, micro-markers, and micro-slits, and the methodology to make each morphology by polydimethylsiloxane is described. The authors reviews the main applications of polydimethylsiloxane in urinary tract devices and the associated complications. As new solutions are needed to reduce bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on polydimethylsiloxane -based devices, a testing platform is described to evaluate surface performance in both urinary catheters and ureteral stents. Also examined are the properties which make polydimethylsiloxane an excellent candidate for understanding complex biological behaviors, including its transparency for applying optical methods, biocompatibility and nontoxicity, high conformity with cells and other biostructures, gas permeability for the transfer of nutrients and oxygen, and flexibility. In the subsequent study, a hybrid material of titanium dioxide and polydimethylsiloxane is obtained and characterized using a sol-gel and electrospraying method. These results indicate that the hybrid material may be viable as an adsorbent, and that the optimization of the process could reduce both cost and analysis time.In order to further the applications of polydimethylsiloxane, the closing study describes the steps in the fabrication of its plasmonic structure, and also examines the switching effect of the sample.

Book The Science of Defoaming

Download or read book The Science of Defoaming written by Peter R. Garrett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 601 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 20 years since the publication of the author’s multi-contributor volume on defoaming, a vast amount of new work has been published and many new insights have been revealed. A cohesive, single-authored book, The Science of Defoaming: Theory, Experiment and Applications provides comprehensive coverage of the topic. It describes the mode of action of antifoams, presenting the relevant theory and the supporting experimental evidence. Beginning with an introductory chapter that discusses the intrinsic properties of foam, the book then describes experimental methods for measuring foam properties important for studying antifoam action and techniques used in establishing the mode of action of antifoams. Since most commercially effective antifoams are oil based, a chapter is devoted to the entry and spreading behavior of oils and the role of thin film forces in determining that behavior. The book reviews the mode of action of antifoams, including theories of antifoam mechanisms and the role of bridging foam films by particles and oil drops. It also addresses issues related to the effect of antifoam concentration on foam formation by air entrainment and the process of deactivation of mixed oil–particle antifoams during dispersal and foam generation. For applications where chemical antifoam use is unacceptable, the text examines mechanical means of defoaming, such as the use of rotary devices and ultrasound. The final chapters consider the application of defoaming in radically different contexts including waterborne latex paints and varnishes, machine washing of textiles, gas–oil separation in crude oil production, and cardiopulmonary bypass surgery. Focusing on the basic science of defoaming, this book presents a balanced view, which also addresses the challenges that may arise for these specific defoaming applications.
