Book excerpt: Discharge of wastes into the lower Mahoning River in Northeastern Ohio since the 19th century has resulted in the accumulation of toxic hydrocarbons, including PAHs, in the river channel and river bank sediments. This study characterizes the polluted bank sediments and evaluates the feasibility of cleanup using in situ bioremediation. Characterization was undertaken in order to study the feasibility of in situ bioremediation. This was accomplished through the collection of 208 samples from 37 soil borings from both banks at five locations along the river. Samples were then analyzed by grain-size analysis and hydraulic conductivities were estimated using the Hazen method. Soil borings also revealed the following: depth to groundwater, depth to bedrock, the upper and lower limits of hydrocarbon contamination, and the thickness of the hydrocarbon contamination in the river banks. Slug tests were performed at four locations to evaluate hydraulic conductivity in very fine-grained sediments, which could not properly be evaluated by the Hazen method. Flow between the groundwater in the bank and the river channel was monitored at four locations for a period of up to one year. Monitoring confirmed the active exchange of flow between the river channel and the banks. This exchange is capable of recontaminating the river's channel by transporting the dissolved contaminants from the bank, via groundwater if the banks are not remediated. PAHs were analyzed in soil samples taken from five locations which verified PAH impact at all four locations. Based on groundwater flow directions, sediment makeup, hydraulic conductivity distribution, thickness of contamination, and PAH availability, this study suggests first, the probability of leaching from impacted bank sediment to groundwater and second, based on the values of hydraulic conductivity that in situ bioremediation is feasible.

Book excerpt: This open access book reviews the water-agro-food and socio-eco-system of the Seine River basin (76,000 km2), and offers a historical perspective on the river’s long-term contamination. The Seine basin is inhabited by circa 17 million people and is impacted by intensive agricultural practices and industrial activities. These pressures have gradually affected its hydrological, chemical and ecological functioning, leading to a maximum chemical degradation between the 1960s and the 1990s. Over the last three decades, while major water-quality improvements have been observed, new issues (e.g. endocrine disruptors, microplastics) have also emerged. The state of the Seine River network, from the headwaters to estuary, is increasingly controlled by the balance between pressures and social responses. This socio-ecosystem provides a unique example of the functioning of a territory under heavy anthropogenic pressure during the Anthropocene era. The achievements made were possible due to the long-term PIREN Seine research program, established in 1989 and today part of the French socio-ecological research network “Zones Ateliers”, itself part of the international Long-term Socio-economic and Ecological Research Network (LTSER). Written by experts in the field, the book provides an introduction to the water budget and the territorial metabolism of the Seine basin, and studies the trajectories and impact of various pollutants in the Seine River. It offers insights into the ecological functioning, the integration of agricultural practices, the analysis of aquatic organic matter, and the evolution of fish assemblages in the Seine basin, and also presents research perspectives and approaches to improve the water quality of the Seine River. The fuels produced from these fossil sources constitute the primary source of energy for the industrial nations of the world, and the petrochemicals from these raw materials are the basis of the synthetic fibre and plastics industries. PAHs are however, widespread pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health must be monitored and controlled. Book excerpt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in soil and vegetation following a large scale chemical fire involving 10 000 ton of polypropylene. In comparison with sites outside the plume from the fire, PAH concentrations were elevated in grass shoots (by up to 70-fold) and in soil (by up to 370-fold). The pattern of PAH dispersion under the plume was dependent on the physical-chemical properties of individual PAHs. The lighter, least hydrophobic PAHs were dispersed into the environment at greater distances than heavier, more hydrophobic PAHs. At the most distant sampling point (4.5 km) under the plume, the low molecular weight PAHs were still considerably elevated in vegetation samples compared to control sites. Dispersion appeared to be regulated by the compounds partitioning between the vapour and particulate phase, with dry particulate deposition occurring closer to the fire source than gaseous deposition. For all PAHs, the fire resulted in greater contamination of soils compared to grasses, with the relative ratio of plant/soil contamination decreasing as hydrophobicity increased.
