Download or read book Polychlorinated Dibenzo p dioxins and furans PCDDs PCDFs Sources and Environmental Impact Epidemiology Mechanisms of Action Health Risks written by Stephen Safe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polychlorinated Dibenzodioxins and -furans (PCDDs and PCDFs) are potent environmental toxins. Environmental exposures to these compounds in part-per-billion (ppb) and part-per-trillion (ppt) concentrations are of particular interest. These exposures may arise from bleached paper products, paper production process sludge, effluent waste water from paper plants, consumption of food and water from contaminated sources and contact to paper products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originated in a series of cross-disciplinary conversations in the years 1984-1990 between the editor, who is a physician-researcher involved in clinical and laboratory research, and a dioxin toxicologist. During the years in which the conversations took place, an extraordinary amount of new scientific literature was published related to dioxins, defined for purposes of this text as the chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, polychlorinated biphe nyls (PCB's) and other compounds that are structurally and toxicologically similar to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7 ,8-TCDD), the most extensively studied and most toxic of this group of chemicals. Dioxins also began to interest not only chemists and toxicologists, but also specialists from diverse disciplines such as wildlife and environmental science, immunology, neuroscience, public health, epidemiology, med icine, government, law, sociology, and journalism. Specialists from such varied disciplines, while familiar with their own literature, frequently did not have time to follow the dioxin literature outside their specialty area. In addition, each specialty had unique knowledge, methods, and perspectives. Cross disciplinary conversation was necessary, but all too frequently, specialists from the various disciplines did not speak the same language, resulting in misunderstanding.

Book Introduction to Environmental Forensics

Download or read book Introduction to Environmental Forensics written by Brian L. Murphy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 747 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third edition of Introduction to Environmental Forensics is a state-of-the-art reference for the practicing environmental forensics consultant, regulator, student, academic, and scientist, with topics including compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA), advanced multivariate statistical techniques, surrogate approaches for contaminant source identification and age dating, dendroecology, hydrofracking, releases from underground storage tanks and piping, and contaminant-transport modeling for forensic applications. Recognized international forensic scientists were selected to author chapters in their specific areas of expertise and case studies are included to illustrate the application of these methods in actual environmental forensic investigations. This edition provides updates on advances in various techniques and introduces several new topics. Provides a comprehensive review of all aspects of environmental forensics Coverage ranges from emerging statistical methods to state-of-the-art analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography-combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry and polytopic vector analysis Numerous examples and case studies are provided to illustrate the application of these forensic techniques in environmental investigations

Book Environmental Forensics for Persistent Organic Pollutants

Download or read book Environmental Forensics for Persistent Organic Pollutants written by Gwen O'Sullivan and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-11-20 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Forensics for Persistent Organic Pollutants represents the state-of-the-art in environmental forensics in relation to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The book is a complete reference for practitioners and students, covering a range of topics from new analytical techniques to regulatory and legal status in the global community. Through case studies from leading international experts, real-world issues — including the allocation of responsibility for release into the environment — are resolved through the application of advanced analytical and scientific techniques. This book introduces and assesses the development of new techniques and technologies to trace the source and fate of newly emerging and classic POPs (perfluoroalkyl substances, brominated flame retardants, organochlorine pesticides, perfluorinated chemicals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls) in environmental media, including atmospheric, marine, freshwater, and urban environments. Real-world case studies show the application of advanced analytical and scientific techniques Discussion of GC*GC provides an introduction and assessment of a novel technique from leaders in the field Introduces the development of new analytical techniques (such as 2-D GC*HC and LC*LC) to trace the source and fate Raises awareness about the health and environmental impact of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) Outlines the development of international measures to control POPs so that chemists can understand the legal issues

Book Chlorinated Dioxins and Dibenzofurans in Perspective

Download or read book Chlorinated Dioxins and Dibenzofurans in Perspective written by Christoffer Rappe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume was developed from the proceedings of a symposium held in Miami Beach, at the 189th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. It is the result of the combined efforts of many experts whose efforts have advanced our knowledge of the production, analysis, distribution, effects and control of chlorinated dioxins, dibenzofurans and related compounds. This is the third in a series of publications originating from current technology presented at national meetings of the American Chemical Society. Using this forum as a catalyst, researchers from all over the world came together to present and discuss their data and plan future work in this rapidly developing and sometimes highly emotional technical area.

Book Dioxins and Dioxin like Compounds in the Food Supply

Download or read book Dioxins and Dioxin like Compounds in the Food Supply written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-12-21 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dioxin and dioxin-like compounds, or DLCs, are found throughout the environment, in soil, water, and air. People are exposed to these unintentional environmental contaminants primarily through the food supply, although at low levels, particularly by eating animal fat in meat, dairy products, and fish. While the amount of DLCs in the environment has declined since the late 1970s, the public continues to be concerned about the safety of the food supply and the potential adverse health effects of DLC exposure, especially in groups such as developing fetuses and infants, who are more sensitive to the toxic effects of these compounds. Dioxins and Dioxin-like Compounds in the Food Supply: Strategies to Decrease Exposure, recommends policy options to reduce exposure to these contaminants while considering how implementing these options could both reduce health risks and affect nutrition, particularly in sensitive and highly exposed groups, if dietary changes are suggested.
