Book An Assessment of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers PBDEs in Sediments and Bivalves of the U S Coastal Zone

Download or read book An Assessment of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers PBDEs in Sediments and Bivalves of the U S Coastal Zone written by K. L. Kimbrough and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents the first national assessment of PBDEs in the U.S. coastal zone. Results suggest that they are widely distributed nationally. Several regions, including the northern Mid-Atlantic, central Gulf of Mexico, Southern California, Pacific Northwest and the Great lakes have elevated PBDE concentrations compared with other coastal regions. Furthermore, PBDE concentrations are positively correlated with human population density along the U.S. coastline. The national and regional perspectives provided herein are intended to support research, local monitoring, and to assist resource managers and policy makers tasked with making regulatory decisions about these contaminants.

Download or read book Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Great Lakes written by Ronald A. Hites and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution threatens the Laurentian Great Lakes and is a serious problem. This book examines what is known about the major classes of persistent toxic organic pollutants. Agricultural runoff, urban waste, industrial discharge, landfill leachate, and atmospheric deposition, are all to blame. Contamination of the various ecosystems is reviewed, and what is known about the effects of this pollution. This volume provides an invaluable resource for those in environmental research, measurements, and decision making concerning the Great Lakes.

Book Introduction to Environmental Toxicology

Download or read book Introduction to Environmental Toxicology written by Wayne Landis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth edition includes new sections on the use of adverse outcome pathways, how climate change changes how we think about toxicology, and a new chapter on contaminants of emerging concern. Additional information is provided on the derivation of exposure-response curves to describe toxicity and they are compared to the use of hypothesis testing. The text is unified around the theme of describing the entire cause-effect pathway from the importance of chemical structure in determining exposure and interaction with receptors to the use of complex systems and hierarchical patch dynamic theory to describe effects to landscapes.

  • Pages : 516 pages

Download or read book The Sava River written by Radmila Milačič and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-05 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a comprehensive overview of environmental aspects of the Sava River, which is the greatest tributary to the Danube River and the major drainage river system of South Eastern Europe. Hydroelectric power plants, river traffic, intensive agricultural activities, heavy industry and floods have considerable influence on the environment and biota in the basin. Summarizing the results that were gathered in the course of EU, bilateral and national projects, the book highlights the most important stressors and helps readers to better understand the impact of anthropogenic activities on the function of river basins. Topics include: transboundary water cooperation between the riparian countries; climate change projection, including its impact on flood hazards; evaluation of anthropogenic pollution sources; pollution of sediments, metal bioavailability and ecotoxicological and microbiological characterization of the river. The biological part also addresses quality aspects related to wildlife in river aquatic ecosystems (algae, macrophytes, zooplankton, macroinvertebrates and fish) and riparian ecosystems (amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). The general state of biodiversity and pressures caused by invasive aquatic species are also discussed.

Book Levels of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers PBDEs in Eggs of Wisconsin Cormorants Phalacrocorax Auritus

Download or read book Levels of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers PBDEs in Eggs of Wisconsin Cormorants Phalacrocorax Auritus written by Sean M. Strom and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been and are still extensively used as flame retardants in a wide variety of consumer products including plastics, textiles, furniture, and electronic circuitry. The prevalence of PBDEs in the Great Lakes and associated wildlife is virtually unknown, although recent studies have shown that concentrations of PBDEs in Lake Michigan salmonids to be among the highest in the world. PBDEs have also been detected in the eggs and tissue of fish-eating birds. Because of evidence that suggests PBDEs may bioaccumulate, there is concern about potential adverse affects in both humans and wildlife. Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are piscivorous and an upper level food chain species, therefore monitoring their eggs should be a useful environmental indicator. In 2003, eggs from double-crested cormorants were collected from islands in Lake Michigan, the Bay of Green Bay, Lake Superior and an inland site in central Wisconsin and analyzed for PBDEs. Total PBDE concentrations ranged from below the limit of detection to 891 ng/g (wet wt.). The highest concentrations were found in eggs collected from Cat Island in Green Bay and the lowest concentrations in eggs from an inland site in central Wisconsin (Mead Wildlife Area). A pattern involving the bioacumulation of PBDE congeners was evident with similar composition in all samples. Congeners composition consisted of BDE-100 (33.0%), BDE-47 (30.9%), BDE-99 (17.4%), BDE-153 (10.6%) and BDE-154 (8.1%). Results indicate that eggs from the inland site had significantly lower concentrations of PBDEs than eggs collected from Lake Michigan and Green Bay (p = 0.002). PBDE concentrations in eggs collected from Spider Island (Lake Michigan) in 1988 were significantly lower than PBDE concentrations from eggs collected at the same site in 1994 (p = 0.001). However, the concentration in eggs from 1994 were not significantly different than the concentration in eggs collected in 2003 (p = 0.24).
