Book Reading by Design

Download or read book Reading by Design written by Pauline Reid and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-04-08 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renaissance readers perceived the print book as both a thing and a medium - a thing that could be broken or reassembled, and a visual medium that had the power to reflect, transform, or deceive. At the same historical moment that print books remediated the visual and material structures of manuscript and oral rhetoric, the relationship between vision and perception was fundamentally called into question. Investigating this crisis of perception, Pauline Reid argues that the visual crisis that suffuses early modern English thought also imbricates sixteenth- and seventeenth-century print materials. These vision troubles in turn influenced how early modern books and readers interacted. Platonic, Aristotelian, and empirical models of sight vied with one another in a culture where vision had a tenuous relationship to external reality. Through situating early modern books’ design elements, such as woodcuts, engravings, page borders, and layouts, as important rhetorical components of the text, Reading by Design articulates how the early modern book responded to epistemological crises of perception and competing theories of sight.

Book Maps and the Writing of Space in Early Modern England and Ireland

Download or read book Maps and the Writing of Space in Early Modern England and Ireland written by B. Klein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2001-01-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maps make the world visible, but they also obscure, distort, idealize. This wide-ranging study traces the impact of cartography on the changing cultural meanings of space, offering a fresh analysis of the mental and material mapping of early modern England and Ireland. Combining cartographic history with critical cultural studies and literary analysis, it examines the construction of social and political space in maps, in cosmography and geography, in historical and political writing, and in the literary works of Marlowe, Shakespeare, Spenser and Drayton.

Book Globalizing Fortune on The Early Modern Stage

Download or read book Globalizing Fortune on The Early Modern Stage written by Jane Hwang Degenhardt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-07-28 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How were understandings of chance, luck, and fortune affected by early capitalist developments such as the global expansion of English trade and colonial exploration? And how could the recognition that fortune wielded a powerful force in the world be squared with Protestant beliefs about the all-controlling hand of divine providence? Was everything pre-determined, or was there room for chance and human agency? Globalizing Fortune addresses these questions by demonstrating how English economic expansion and global transformation produced a new philosophy of fortune oriented around discerning and optimizing unexpected opportunities. The popular theater played an influential role in dramatizing the new prospects and dangers opened up by nascent global economics and fostering a set of ethical practices for engaging with fortunes unpredictable turns. While largely derided as a sinful, earthly distraction in the Boethian tradition of the Middle Ages, fortune made a comeback on the English Renaissance stage as a force associated with valiant risks, ennobling adventures, and purposeful action. The early modern stage also reveals how a new philosophy of fortune led to economic exploitation and racialized exclusions. Offering in-depth discussions of plays by Shakespeare, Marlowe, Heywood, Dekker, and others, Globalizing Fortune demonstrates how the history of the English commercial theaterlike that of English seaborne expansionwas also a history of fortune. The public theater not only shaped popular understandings of fortunes role in a culture undergoing economic transformation, but also addressed this transformation from a unique position because of its own implication in London commerce, its reliance on paying customers, and its vulnerability to the risks and contingencies of live performance. Drawing attention to an archive of plays dramatizing maritime travel, trade, and adventure, this book shows how the popular stage shaped evolving understandings of fortune by cultivating new viewing practices and mechanisms of theatrical wonder, as well as modeling proper ways of acting in the face of unknown outcomes and contingency. In short, Globalizing Fortune demonstrates how the public theater offered the first modern understanding of fortune as a globalizing commercial and ethical phenomenon.

Book Andrew Young

Download or read book Andrew Young written by Richard Ormrod and published by Lutterworth Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Young was one of the most original, inventive and paradoxical poets of the twentieth-century. C.S. Lewis called him, 'A modern Marvell and a modern marvel', and Philip Larkin remarked that, 'His works are in no danger of being forgotten'. Regarded as 'a major poet' by academic scholars, Young's prestige in this critical biography is taken one step further and declared a 'great' poet. Dr Richard Ormrod criticises and analyses Andrew Young's poetry to establish this greatness, especially in his lengthy masterpiece, Out of the World and Back. It also explores his fascinating life and personality: a wry, whimsical, erudite, complex man; a theist and a pantheist; an ironist and wordsmith; and a fervent naturalist, less at ease with people. Anyone interested in, or studying twentieth-century poetry at any level, will find this book invaluable and its claims challenging. Lovers of plants, birds and animals will be stunned by Young's deeply observant, unsentimental nature poetry, and by the two witty and engaging prose 'flower' books, A Prospect of Flowers and A Retrospect of Flowers - both hardy perennials.
