Book Contaminated Water Supplies at Camp Lejeune

Download or read book Contaminated Water Supplies at Camp Lejeune written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-09-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1980s, two water-supply systems on the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina were found to be contaminated with the industrial solvents trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE). The water systems were supplied by the Tarawa Terrace and Hadnot Point watertreatment plants, which served enlisted-family housing, barracks for unmarried service personnel, base administrative offices, schools, and recreational areas. The Hadnot Point water system also served the base hospital and an industrial area and supplied water to housing on the Holcomb Boulevard water system (full-time until 1972 and periodically thereafter). This book examines what is known about the contamination of the water supplies at Camp Lejeune and whether the contamination can be linked to any adverse health outcomes in former residents and workers at the base.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dirty Water is the riveting story of how Howard Bennett, a Los Angeles schoolteacher with a gift for outrageous rhetoric, fought pollution in Santa Monica Bay--and won. The story begins in 1985, when many scientists considered the bay to be one of the most polluted bodies of water in the world. The insecticide DDT covered portions of the sea floor. Los Angeles discharged partially treated sewage into its waters. Lifeguards came down with mysterious illnesses. And Howard Bennett happily swam in it every morning. By accident, Bennett learned that Los Angeles had applied for a waiver from the Clean Water Act to continue discharging sewage into the bay. Incensed that he had been swimming in dirty water, Bennett organized oddball coalition to orchestrate stunts such as wrapping brown ribbon around LA's city hall and issuing Dirty Toilet Awards to chastise the city's administration. This is the fast-paced story of how this unusual cast of characters created an environmental movement in Los Angeles that continues to this day with the nationally recognized Heal the Bay. Character-driven, compelling, and uplifting, Dirty Water tells how even the most polluted water can be cleaned up-by ordinary people.

Book Ecobiology of Polluted Waters

Download or read book Ecobiology of Polluted Waters written by Arvind Kumar and published by Daya Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Goethe said- Everything originated in water, and everything is sustained by water . Really with its multidimensional uses, water is one of the most precious gifts of nature without which no life could survive. The maximum part of the earth is covered with water but unfortunately we have only 3% of it in the form of freshwater, out of which 2% is in the form of glaciers and mountain ice thus only 1% of the total is on disposal for various requirements. The water is more enough if it is used and managed properly but due to our mismanagement and non-awareness, the whole world is facing teething crisis of water shortage as well as water pollution. Not only this, the waterbodies are now-a-days treated as dustbin. Man has miserably failed to realize his unabated interference in the natural recycling of essential elements, which have posed a serious threat to his own existence. The aim of this book is to provide a wide-ranging and authoritative coverage or water pollution, which is fundamental to our understanding and appreciation of the nature of aquatic environment. The book will be very much helpful for students, research scholars, Professors, scientists and policy makers in order to provide a sufficient depth of the subject to satisfy the needs at a level which will be comprehensive and interesting.
