Book The Military in the Early Modern World

Download or read book The Military in the Early Modern World written by Markus Meumann and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2020-12-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When looking at the early modern period (c. 1500–c. 1800), we often speak of "the military" or "the army". But what exactly do we mean when using these terms? The forms and structures of the armed forces have not only changed between 1500 and 1800, but also varied throughout different regions of the world and even within Europe. The contributors to this volume examine twelve early modern examples of armed forces in the Holy Roman Empire, Western and Eastern Europe, Eastern Asia and North America and paint a multifarious and even disparate picture during this period. The findings suggest that modern notions of the armed forces common in the early modern period should be used more prudently to avoid prevalent implications of non-existing continuity and uniformity.

Book Studies in the Economic Policy of Frederick the Great

Download or read book Studies in the Economic Policy of Frederick the Great written by W.O. Henderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biographies of Frederick the Great generally emphasise the military and diplomatic events of his reign and neglect to discuss fully the significance of his economic policy. In this series of essays Dr. Henderson deals with various aspects of the Prussian economy in Frederick the Great’s reign. He describes Frederick’s commercial policy, the reconstruction of Prussia after the Seven Years War and the state of the Prussian economy in 1780’s, showing that "alone among his contemporaries Frederick left his country with a far more flourishing economy than it had been when he ascended the throne". The role of the private entrepreneur in Prussia at this time is illustrated by surveys of the careers of the merchants Splitgerber and Gotzkowsky who promoted the expansion of Prussia’s armament, silk and porcelain industries. This book was first published in 1963.

Book excerpt: "The last great work of the age of reason, the final instance when all human knowledge could be presented with a single point of view ... Unabashed optimism, and unabashed racism, pervades many entries in the 11th, and provide its defining characteristics ... Despite its occasional ugliness, the reputation of the 11th persists today because of the staggering depth of knowledge contained with its volumes. It is especially strong in its biographical entries. These delve deeply into the history of men and women prominent in their eras who have since been largely forgotten - except by the historians, scholars"-- The Guardian, https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2012/apr/10/encyclopedia-britannica-11th-edition.

Book Modern Prussian History 1830 1947

Download or read book Modern Prussian History 1830 1947 written by Philip G. Dwyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of Prussia and subsequent unification of Germany under Prussia was one of the most important events in modern European history. However, the fact that this unification was brought about as a result of the Prussian military has led to many misconceptions about the nature of Prussia, and consequently of Germany, which persist to this day. This collection sets out to correct them. Beginning in 1830, and finishing with the official dissolution of Prussia by the Allies in 1947, the book takes a broad approach: chapters cover the conservatives and the monarchy, industrialisation, the transformation of the rural and urban environment, the labour movement, the tensions between Catholics and Protestants within the state, and the debate about the links between Prussian militarism and the final tragedy of Nazi Germany. By focusing on the social, religious and political tensions that helped define the course of Prussian history, the book also throws light on the development of modern German history.
