Au-delà de la compétence technique nécessaire qui peut expliquer la fréquence et la virtuosité du recours à la cartographie d'une part, au-delà de l'intérêt pédagogique de la visualisation d'un discours abstrait d'autre part, se pose plus fondamentalement la question épistémologique de la valeur heuristique de la carte dans la production du savoir. Après un groupe de contributions introductives définissant des positions théoriques différentes, voire opposées, cet ouvrage développe la réflexion autour de quatre thèmes : 1) Commandes, productions et usages de la carte ; 2) Dénaturaliser les cartes : 1e pouvoir et l'autorité ; 3) Langage graphique et construction du savoir ; 4) Cartographier l'Autre. Il se poursuit par un groupe d'interrogations transversales sur les précurseurs du langage graphique de la cartographie statistique des XVIIIe et XIXe siècles ; sur la valeur rhétorique de 1a carte, les modalités collectives de construction de l'identité et de l'altérité et des politiques publiques territoriales ; à propos des politiques urbaines, sur la force de l'instrument graphique et en même temps sa difficulté, voire son incapacité, à dire la complexité du social. Trois contributions tirent enfin quelques leçons d'ensemble : la première établit une comparaison entre les traditions cartographiques anglo-saxonne et française ; la seconde, sans nier les inconvénients, voire les risques, de l'outil cartographique, insiste sur son apport aux processus de la cognition géographique ; la dernière, interrogeant les travaux de sciences politiques en priorité mais pas exclusivement, pose la question de la redondance de l'image par rapport au texte et surtout du risque d'une cartographie d'assignation, de " portrait du roi ".

Book excerpt: The results presented in this book summarize the main findings of the CARBOFOR project, which brought together 52 scientists from 14 research units to investigate the effects of future climate on the carbon cycle, the productivity and vulnerability of French forests. This book explains the current forest carbon cycle in temperate and Mediterranean climates, including the dynamics of soil carbon and the total carbon stock of French forests, based on forest inventories. It reviews and illustrates the main ground-based methods for estimating carbon stocks in tree biomass. Spatial variations in projected climate change over metropolitan France throughout the 21st century are described. The book then goes on to consider the impacts of climate change on tree phenology and forest carbon balance, evapotranspiration and production as well as their first order interaction with forest management alternatives. The impact of climate change on forest vulnerability is analysed. A similar simulation study was carried out for a range of pathogenic fungi, emphasizing the importance of both warming and precipitation changes. The consequences of climate change on the occurrence of forest fires and the forest carbon cycle in the Mediterranean zone are also considered.A valuable reference for researchers and academics, forest engineers and managers, and graduate level students in forest ecology, ecological modelling and forestry.

Not only is family farming the predominant form of agriculture around the world, especially so in developing countries, it is also the agriculture of the future. By declaring 2014 the “International Year of Family Farming,” the United Nations has placed this form of production at the center of debates on agricultural development. These debates are often reduced to two opposing positions. The first advocates the development of industrial or company agriculture, supposedly efficient because it follows industrial processes for market-oriented mass production. The second promotes the preservation of family farming with its close links between family and farm. The authors of this book wish to enrich the debates by helping overcome stereotypes – which often manifest through the use of terms such as “small-scale farming, subsistence farming, peasant, etc.” Research work has emphatically demonstrated the great adaptability of family farming systems and their ability to meet the major challenges of tomorrow but it has also not overlooked their limitations. The authors explore the choices facing society and possible development trajectories at national and international levels, and the contribution that agriculture will have to make. They call for a recommitment of public policies in favor of family farming in developing countries and stress the importance of planning actions targeted at and tailored to the family character of agricultural models. But, above all, they highlight the need to overcome strictly sectoral rationales, by placing family farming at the core of a broader economic and social project. It distinguishes fossil-fuel-based and ecosystem-based systems. Agroecology and integrated farming are two ecosystem-based systems. Their principles and characteristics are defined. Their implementation often requires a recapitalization of ecosystems in soil organic matter and ecological infrastructures. As scientific activities, they are often involved in action and based on a holistic and participatory approach with pilot farms. Examples of this type of research activities are presented. Changes are needed in Belgian and European agricultural systems notably because they are based on massive use of fossil fuels and imports of animal feed from other continents. In addition to expected price increases of these inputs, a self-sufficiency rate is desirable. Intensive systems also have a negative impact on the environment. Policy options are proposed for implementing a fast transition to more agroecological systems.
