Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume convenes English- and French-speaking Canadianists who share a broad reflection on issues of exclusion and inclusion in Canadian contexts. It is through historical, but also linguistic, cultural and literary perspectives that we can unveil and learn more about the particular instances of inclusion and exclusion. The volume offers a kaleidoscopic view of Canadian history, politics, literature, and culture. The collected essays provide a discussion on a number of contemporary Anglophone and Francophone literary works, the evaluation of Canadian language policy, the reflection upon the literary canon as well as challenges of literary translation in a bilingual country, the distinctness of Black Lives Matter Canada, and, last but not the least, the historical status of New France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Exception Taken, Jonathan Buchsbaum examines the movements that have emerged in opposition to the homogenizing force of Hollywood in global filmmaking. While European cinema was entering a steady decline in the 1980s, France sought to strengthen support for its film industry under the new Mitterrand government. Over the following decades, the country lobbied partners in the European Economic Community to design strategies to protect the audiovisual industries and to resist cultural free-trade pressures in international trade agreements. These struggles to preserve the autonomy of national artistic prerogatives emboldened many countries to question the benefits of accelerated globalization. Led by the energetic minister of culture Jack Lang, France initiated a series of measures to support all sectors of the film industry. Lang introduced laws mandating that state and private television invest in the film industry, effectively replacing the revenue lost from a shrinking theatrical audience for French films. With the formation of the European Union in 1992, Europe passed a new treaty (Maastricht) that extended its legal purview to culture for the first time, setting up the dramatic confrontation over the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs (GATT) in 1993. Pushed by France, the EU fought the United States over the idea that countries should preserve their right to regulate cultural activity as they saw fit. France and Canada then initiated a campaign to protect cultural diversity within UNESCO that led to the passage of the Convention on Cultural Diversity in 2005. As France pursued these efforts to protect cultural diversity beyond its borders, it also articulated "a certain idea of cinema" that did not simply defend a narrow vision of national cinema. France promoted both commercial cinema and art cinema, disproving announcements of the death of cinema.

Book Derrida Ethics Under Erasure

Download or read book Derrida Ethics Under Erasure written by Nicole Anderson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-03-08 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derrida's work is controversial, its interpretation hotly contested. Derrida: Ethics Under Erasure offers a new way of thinking about ethics from a Derridean perspective, linking the most abstract theoretical implications of his writing on deconstruction and on justice and responsibility to representations of the practice of ethical paradoxes in everyday life. The book presents the development of Derrida's thinking on ethics by demonstrating that the ethical was a focus of Derrida's work at every stage of his career. In connecting Derrida's earlier work on language with the ethics implicated in his later work on justice and responsibility, Nicole Anderson traverses literary, linguistic, philosophical and ethical interpretative movements, thus recontextualising Derrida's entire oeuvre for a contemporary readership. She explores the positive ethical implications of Derrida's work for representation and practice and asks the reader to consider how this new ethical reading of Derrida's work might be applied to concrete instances of his or her own ethical experience.

Book Exclusions

  • Author : Julie Fette
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press
  • Release : 2012-03-27
  • ISBN : 0801463998
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Exclusions written by Julie Fette and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, the French Third Republic banned naturalized citizens from careers in law and medicine for up to ten years after they had obtained French nationality. In 1940, the Vichy regime permanently expelled all lawyers and doctors born of foreign fathers and imposed a 2 percent quota on Jews in both professions. On the basis of extensive archival research, Julie Fette shows in Exclusions that doctors and lawyers themselves, despite their claims to embody republican virtues, persuaded the French state to enact this exclusionary legislation. At the crossroads of knowledge and power, lawyers and doctors had long been dominant forces in French society: they ran hospitals and courts, doubled as university professors, held posts in parliament and government, and administered justice and public health for the nation. Their social and political influence was crucial in spreading xenophobic attitudes and rendering them more socially acceptable in France. Fette traces the origins of this professional protectionism to the late nineteenth century, when the democratization of higher education sparked efforts by doctors and lawyers to close ranks against women and the lower classes in addition to foreigners. The legislatively imposed delays on the right to practice law and medicine remained in force until the 1970s, and only in 1997 did French lawyers and doctors formally recognize their complicity in the anti-Semitic policies of the Vichy regime. Fette's book is a powerful contribution to the argument that French public opinion favored exclusionary measures in the last years of the Third Republic and during the Holocaust.

Book Le Concept de libert au Canada l poque des R volutions atlantiques 1776 1838

Download or read book Le Concept de libert au Canada l poque des R volutions atlantiques 1776 1838 written by Michel Ducharme and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
