Book The Politics of Religion in Early Modern France

Download or read book The Politics of Religion in Early Modern France written by Joseph Bergin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in detail and broad in scope, this majestic book is the first to reveal the interaction of politics and religion in France during the crucial years of the long seventeenth century. Joseph Bergin begins with the Wars of Religion, which proved to be longer and more violent in France than elsewhere in Europe and left a legacy of unresolved tensions between church and state with serious repercussions for each. He then draws together a series of unresolved problems--both practical and ideological--that challenged French leaders thereafter, arriving at an original and comprehensive view of the close interrelations between the political and spiritual spheres of the time. The author considers the powerful religious dimension of French royal power even in the seventeenth century, the shift from reluctant toleration of a Protestant minority to increasing aversion, conflicts over the independence of the Catholic church and the power of the pope over secular rulers, and a wealth of other interconnected topics.

Book Politics and the Public Interest in the Seventeenth Century RLE Political Science Volume 27

Download or read book Politics and the Public Interest in the Seventeenth Century RLE Political Science Volume 27 written by J. A. W. Gunn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concept of public interest against the background of English politics from the Civil War to the coming of the Hanoverians. These years witnessed both the rise of the modern notion of the public interest as a part of ordinary political language and the growth of a social philosophy of individualism. The new ideas challenged the status quo, based on order, reason of state and national power, in the name of legitimate self-interest and respect for the rights of the private person. In presenting a complex set of ideas in their historical context, the author examines both abstract philosophies and the issues of the day as recorded in press, pulpit and law courts. A chapter devoted to economic thought includes a re-assessment of the social assumptions of mercantilism.

Book From Theology to History

Download or read book From Theology to History written by Elisabeth Israels Perry and published by Springer. This book was released on 1973 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toutes ces belles contro¥erses Sur les religions di¥erses N'ont jamais produit aucun bien: Chacun s' anime pour la sienne; Et que fait-on pour la chretienne? On dispute, et l'on ne fait rien. - Saint-E¥remond, 1614-1703. This book asserts, contrary to Saint-E¥remond, that religious controversy on the eve of the Enlightenment was far from sterile or antichristian. In reconstructing a French religious debate of the era of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, it shows how the debate allowed both lay and clerical thinkers of the late seventeenth century to discuss the critical issues of their own day. The Revocation era was an era of crisis not only for French Protestantism, but for Protestantism in general: the final acts of the English Revolution were played out during these years, and the northern maritime alliance against the Catholic Louis XIV took shape. The Revocation era was also a period of exciting intellectual ferment in religion, morality, politics and science. Although the topic of the religious debate in France was historical - the history of the Reformation, the discussion of the topic reflected both the crisis and ferment of the times.

Book Trouble with Democracy

Download or read book Trouble with Democracy written by Rosich Gerard Rosich and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western political thought has long maintained that democracy, once achieved, is here to stay. This view appears to be supported by successive 'waves of democratisation' across the world but, in truth, the political situation of our time is much more ambiguous. On the one hand, the commitment to democracy seems to be more widely shared than ever; on the other, popular will has ever less impact on political decisions because of alleged constraints in an era of 'globalisation'. Existing democracies suffer from a combination of technocratic governance and populist reactions. Global political communication has foundered with addressing urgent problems such as climate change, global social justice and economic-financial crises. By placing political condition of our time in its long-term historical context, this book radically reconsiders key issues of political thought and gives you a comparative exploration of the current experiences of democracy in several world-regions.

Book The French Book

Download or read book The French Book written by Henri-Jean Martin and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1996-07-26 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book as the subject of a distinct historical discipline dates from the landmark publication of L'Apparition du livre by Lucien Febvre and Henri-Jean Martin in 1958. In this further contribution to his pathbreaking work with Febvre, eminent French historian Henri-Jean Martin explores the role of the book and book industry in early modern France. Martin begins with a sweeping look at the revolutionary role played by the new technology of printing in Europe of the Renaissance and Reformation. Shifting the focus to France, he then examines the political implications of publishing in the reign of Francis I, including such topics as the founding of royal and university libraries, the role of church-state relations, Richelieu's cultural program, and censorship. In revealing case studies of Rouen and Grenoble, Martin pinpoints precisely which books were sold and to which social groups, and explains why the initially successful printers of Rouen were eventually forced out of business by the Parisian courts. Martin also casts a discerning eye on early graphic design—from the first illustrated "coffee table" books purchased by the newly rich to the invention of the paragraph to facilitate reading. And he shows how attempts by the French government to suppress and control publication were eventually thwarted by free market forces from Amsterdam and Neufchatel. This is a book that will be of interest to those who study the history of the book, intellectual history of early modern Europe, and the relation between politics and ideas.

Book Ethics and Politics in Seventeenth century France

Download or read book Ethics and Politics in Seventeenth century France written by Keith Cameron and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thought-provoking book deconstructs the ethical and political framework supporting and circumscribing the actions of a powerful elite in France between the early 1600s and the final years of Louis XIV's reign. It contains major essays on Richelieu, Retz, La Rochefoucauld, Conde, Fouquet and a range of dramatists. Leading British and French specialists offer a radical reassessment of the absolute values on which was founded the authority of the established church and the King. Discussion of the twin themes of the book is divided into two parts, in acknowledgment of the equal importance accorded in this study to the fact of history and to the virtual reality of dramatic representation.
