Book excerpt: Central India comprising of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh was a playground of Political forces during the early medieval period on account of the rule of powerful dynasties like the Pratiharas, the Rastrakutas, the Paramaras, the Kalachuris, the Candellas, the Kacchapaghatas, the Yajvapalas, the Nagas of Bastar etc. Each of these dynasties played a dominant role in shaping the political history not only the region over which they ruled, but northern, eastern, western and southern India where they often carried on raids and established their supremacy. Their conquests were carried as far as Bengal and Orissa in the east, Gujarat in the west, Kashmir in the north and Karnataka in the south. Also their cultural achievements in the field of Art, Literature, Religion and Society were immense. All these were possible only on account of sound policies the rulers followed and achieved them through the thoughts of ancient Indian political thinkers. What was the nature of the political thought and organization of the ruling dynasties of Central India during the post -Harsa period, till the rise of the Muslim rule in this part of the country is the subject matter of research in this book. No work on the lines suggested hereinunder has been attempted till date. The primary source of the present study is inscriptions of the dyansties who were ruling over different parts of the region. These sources of information have further been supplemented by the contemporary literary works of the court-poets of the rulers concerned, in addition to other contemporary literary sources. Various Smrtis, Niti works and Digests have been suitably employed to supplement the findings. Numismatic sources too have been harnessed to arrive at conclusions. Interpretations provided in Modern works have been utilized wherever necessary.

The impact is most apparent in the changing fortunes of the Congress party, which suffered two major defeats in 2014 and 2019 elections, bringing the party's crisis to the front and centre of public debate. This book seeks to understand the reasons for these enormous changes by looking first at the underlying conditions that led to the decline of the Congress and, second, the challenges' both external and internal' confronting the Congress and, while doing so, estimating its impact on Indian politics and on the Congress. More specifically, it looks at how important ideological debates provoked by the rise of majoritarianism, the Gujarat model, hypernationalism, the secular retreat, and the curbs and restrictions on the opposition influenced Congress. Exploring ideological shifts and organizational limits that shaped the decline of the Congress makes a compelling case for the significance of the Congress story in understanding the larger political transformation underway in India. The argument centers on the Congress party, but comparatively speaking, it has relevance for the experience of centrist and centre-left parties in other countries, which too suffered a decline in the context of the upsurge of populist nationalism and right-wing politics in the past few years. Analysis of political change in India in the past decade affords insights into the processes of transformation and polarization that grounded the Congress party and centrist parties in other countries as well.
