Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Studies The present volume embodies a few out of many Political Studies to Which I have given my best thoughts during the last twenty five years. Of these, by far the greater number, having appeared as articles in the daily Press, are excluded from republication. Those here preserved have been collected under the advice of friends, Who have considered them worthy of more than ephemeral notice. One only - that on The Roman Colonies under the Empire - now appears -for the first time. Like the Letters on University Reform and College Fellowships, and one or two other Essays contained in this volume, it is political only in that Wider sense which comprehends every thing that can interest or instruct a statesman. Book Principles of Political Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Political Science Classic Reprint written by Robert Niven Gilchrist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Science As this book is meant to be a text-book for the earlier stages of political and economic studies I have not elaborate-d what may be called abnormal theories. A fair impersonal presentation of modern political theory has been my endeavour. Originally I meant to include several chapters on the history of political theory, but the book ran the danger of being overcrowded, so wherever possible I have incorporated historical sections in the individual subjects. The treatment of some subjects, e? The Government of Britain, and the Government of India, has been much more detailed than a first course of' political studies usually demands. Such detailed treatment is due to the nature of the course prescribed in India. Repetition of detail, e.g., under the Executive (chapter XVI), and under the individual governments (chapters XXI - XXVII) is also due to local exigencies. The chapter on the Government of Uapan, though not essential according to our local syllabus, is added to enable Indian students to know in outline the system of government in an eastern empire which for many years has created the deepest interest in India. The bibliography appended is intended as an initial guide. To Indian colleges wishing to start Political and Economic studies. The list has been compiled with reference to the sums usually available for such purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Study of Politics

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Politics: The Present State of American Political Science This essay is addressed to graduate students. My aim is to tell young men and young women some things it may be good to know about the profession they intend to enter. If old timers think they learn something also, they are welcome to whatever they pick up. If many older members of the profession read this, some of them will find confirmation of their own positions. They may even encounter some of their own ideas stated in their own words. For I have freely utilized what I have heard said over a period of at least three decades. I hope, of course, that I have myself added something to the discussion-if I have, it is not likely to sound new to men of my own age. I have not won any prizes for keeping my thoughts to myself over the years. But the young people, I have hope, will encounter a thing or two here they have not already pondered. Book Representative Statesmen Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Representative Statesmen Vol 1 of 2 written by Alex Charles Ewald and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Representative Statesmen, Vol. 1 of 2: Political Studies In the study of the history of administration, it is curious to observe the different means that have been adopted for the government of mankind. Human nature is such a collection of diametrically opposite qualities - so independent, so subservient, so hard to please, so easy to flatter, a tyrant one moment, a slave the next, now austere as Cato, then lax as Alcibiades - that it is impossible to lay down any fixed rules by which the adhesion and support of a nation can be maintained. Where a man of genius fails a comparative dullard has been successful. The most opposite arts have often been employed upon the same people and under the same circumstances, yet all such arts have equally prospered. Book Outlines of Political Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Political Science Classic Reprint written by George Gunton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Political Science Political science, in its most important aspect, is social economics practically applied. Strictly speaking, political science deals with human society in its various forms of political organization, and includes, therefore, the nature and practical methods of government. The importance of this phase of the subject should not be underestimated; but if mere government in the abstract, or its machinery and methods, were all there is of political science, the subject would have little interest except to the special student and little usefulness in practical affairs. The theoretical and mechanical side of political science is to the larger side, which we have called "social economics practically applied," what the skeleton is to the living, breathing, acting body. Political science legitimately includes the study of what the state, representing the people, can and should do to promote the general welfare; in what ways, if any, it can modify, direct or stimulate the action of economic forces wherever the natural laws governing those forces do not of themselves produce the results shown by experience to be wholesome, helpful and progressive. This side of political science is what binds it close at ever}' point to practical human life; this is what makes it of immediate and serious interest to every member, rich or poor, of organized society. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Science But sometimes, among people of high social mor ality, these epochs spring from the spirit of democracy and begin with the sharing rather than the surrender of rights. That is the characteristic of the new age into which we enter as women become citizens. Men give up nothing but share with women those political privileges which have been about the only survival of the ancient days when men were the owners of their families and the warrior citizens of a militant state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Chambers: An Inductive Study in Political Science There is reason to apprehend that this work may be regarded merely as a time dc circonstance. That the moment of its appearance gives to it something of that character it would be affecta tion to deny; but, as a fact, it is a fragment of a larger work to which much of my leisure has for some years been devoted. This work may, I trust, be completed within a reasonable time, but meanwhile it seems not inopportune to offer to the public an instalment which may, it is hoped, contribute towards the solution of a problem of immediate importance. Book Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited Classic Reprint written by Raymond Garfield Gettell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited All teachers realize the necessity of having their students read more than is contained in the textbook, and valuable selections of material to direct such reading have recently appeared for the students of history, economics, sociology, and American government. As yet, however, no book of readings for the general subject of political science has been attempted, and the editor claims the indulgence due to one who ventures into an untried field. In a number of cases contemporary accounts or official documents have been quoted, but no effort has been made to secure material from obscure or out-of-the-way sources. On the contrary, extracts have been taken, whenever possible, from recognized modern authorities - from books the majority of which will be found in every well-appointed college library. In this way it is hoped that students will be led to read further, using this volume as a framework around which their reading may be organized. Besides, the selections in this book may serve as a basis for classroom discussion, the case system of instruction being particularly applicable to political science.
