Download or read book Political Socialization of Youth in Post soviet States written by Tatiana G. Afanasyeva and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract The field of political socialization has been generally identified as a useful tool in the study of American political behavior. However, growing number of researchers urge for the expansion of the field due to its high potential for addressing vital issues in the study of comparative and international politics. Utilizing post-Soviet Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ukraine as theoretical model, this study discusses the expediency of political socialization framework in identifying nation-building techniques. Examination and comparison of youth political socialization policies in Azerbaijan, Russia, and Ukraine revealed the unsuccessful attempts of the first post-Soviet government to create politically involved youth to be employed for generating political support. The study further exhibited the shift of the current administrations to create patriotically conscious, rather than politically active, youth to be used for generating and maintaining political approval for the existing regimes.

Book From Pacesetters to Dropouts

Download or read book From Pacesetters to Dropouts written by Tamar Ruth Horowitz and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a combined effort of scholars who participated in a conference entitled "Post-Soviet Youth: A Comparative Study." The book focuses on the post-perestroika period, a time of great instability and change on the national and individual level. It analyzes the effect of this dynamic on youth, who in the transitional phase of adolescence are particularly susceptible to social disruption. The scope includes not only youth who remained in the former Soviet Union but also those who emigrated to the West- Israel, Germany, the U.S. and Greece. It was considered important to place this study in a cross-cultural framework in order to differentiate between local influences and the common denominators from the Soviet background. From Pacesetters to Dropouts offers an important contribution to the study of the effect of a particular form of socialization on youth in a period of stress and change. It is relevant not only to understanding the changes undergone by an important segment of society in the former Soviet Union but also to studying the experience of other immigrant groupings in an era characterized by widespread migration.

Book Political Support Among Adolescents in Post communist Hybrid Regimes

Download or read book Political Support Among Adolescents in Post communist Hybrid Regimes written by Olena Nikolayenko and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of communism has triggered the rise of hybrid regimes falling somewhere between democracy and dictatorship. A critical issue in these societies is how to ensure citizen support for the new political order. Drawing upon Easton's work, this study distinguishes three objects of political support: the regime, incumbent authorities, and political community. Institutional theories argue that incumbent job performance is vital to political support in post-communist societies. Political socialization theory, in contrast, attaches the greatest importance to the role of socialization agents, including schools and the mass media. While scholars have tested these hypotheses using survey data on voting-age citizens, scant research concentrated on the political attitudes of adolescents in Eastern Europe. To address this oversight, this dissertation analyzes the effects of political socialization and incumbent performance on political support among 13-16 year old adolescents in Russia and Ukraine. A distinguishing characteristic of this cohort of citizens is that it has grown up without any firsthand experience with the communist regime. The empirical analysis is based on an original survey of 1,814 adolescents in spring-fall 2005. Several important findings emerge from the study. First, the results demonstrate how different agents of political socialization influence the magnitude of political support among adolescents. Specifically, the analysis finds that open classroom climate fosters democratic support, but weakens national pride among students. In addition, exposure to news media has a stronger impact on trust in political incumbents than trust in occupants of order-related institutions. Second, the results reveal that satisfaction with incumbent performance is positively associated with regrets about the demise of the Soviet Union among Russian adolescents, whereas the reverse trend is observed in Ukraine. Furthermore, the results unequivocally show that the east-west regional cleavage has a profound influence on the political attitudes of Ukrainian respondents. This dissertation contributes to comparative politics literature in several ways. First, the research expands our understanding of political socialization processes in non-democracies. Second, the study reveals that the effects of incumbent performance are contingent on the national context. Finally, the analysis illuminates how regional divisions influence political attitudes of adolescents in a divided society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been assumed that the historical legacy of Soviet Communism would have an important effect on post-communist states. However, prior research has focused primarily on the institutional legacy of communism. Communism's Shadow instead turns the focus to the individuals who inhabit post-communist countries, presenting a rigorous assessment of the legacy of communism on political attitudes. Post-communist citizens hold political, economic, and social opinions that consistently differ from individuals in other countries. Grigore Pop-Eleches and Joshua Tucker introduce two distinct frameworks to explain these differences, the first of which focuses on the effects of living in a post-communist country, and the second on living through communism. Drawing on large-scale research encompassing post-communist states and other countries around the globe, the authors demonstrate that living through communism has a clear, consistent influence on why citizens in post-communist countries are, on average, less supportive of democracy and markets and more supportive of state-provided social welfare. The longer citizens have lived through communism, especially as adults, the greater their support for beliefs associated with communist ideology—the one exception being opinions regarding gender equality. A thorough and nuanced examination of communist legacies' lasting influence on public opinion, Communism's Shadow highlights the ways in which political beliefs can outlast institutional regimes.
