Book The Political Socialization Effects of Marriage for American Women Voters

Download or read book The Political Socialization Effects of Marriage for American Women Voters written by Christina M. Coloroso and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gender plays a critical role in the development of political behavior. Beginning at the earliest stages of life and continuing through adulthood, males and females are socialized to approach politics in accordance with prevalent gender norms and expectations. Socialization, especially when reinforced by situational and structural factors, aptly prepares women for roles as wives and homemakers rather than effective political actors. Despite these constraints, adult women express robust political preferences distinct from men. Women and men differ in partisan affiliation, ideology, issue and candidate preferences, and general approaches to politics. Combined these disparities are referred to as the Gender Gap. Though adulthood is generally considered a time of political stability, women commonly undergo one final socializing event which virtually eliminates the Gender Gap; marriage. This thesis examines the political socialization effects of marriage for women, using the American National Election Studies 2000, 2002 and 2004 Full Panel Survey. Results of logistic regressions indicate that as women transition from singlehood to marriage, they are significantly more likely to also change their political preferences to mirror those of their spouse.

Book Voting For Women

Download or read book Voting For Women written by Kathy Dolan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how voters evaluate women candidates, who votes for them, and why. Women comprise an ever-increasing percentage of the candidate pool for elective office in the United States. Public opinion surveys profess strong support for female candidaes, yet many of these same candidates still encounter skepticism (at best) or hostility (at worst) from the public. The role of candidates gender in elections is a complex one. Yet, our understanding of how voters react to these women is often based on election-specific, anecdotal, or hypothetical evidence. Voting for Women is one of the first book-length treatments of both how the public evaluates female candidates and whether and when people will support them at the polls. It also provides a history of women and elections in the U.S. and analysis of contemporary data on how voting environments can influence women's success.

Book excerpt: This book assembles what political scientists, sociologists, and communication analysts have learned in almost six decades of research on political socialization (the lifelong process by which we acquire political beliefs). It also explores how people develop political values, attitudes, identities, and behavioral dispositions. Of particular interest to Philo C. Wasburn and Tawnya J. Adkins Covert is the process by which people are made into active citizens who are politically interested, informed, partisan, tolerant, and engaged. Finally, Wasburn and Adkins Covert identify some suggestions for institutional change that would lead to “better” citizenship.

Book Women Voters in Indian Elections

Download or read book Women Voters in Indian Elections written by Sanjay Kumar and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-08-12 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at different dimensions of political participation of women voters in India. Elections in India have witnessed an increasing electoral participation of women, both as political actors and as voters. Taking note of this positive development, the book looks at what has contributed to this increased turnout among women voters in Indian elections and discusses in detail the factors that facilitate or hinder this participation. Drawing on empirical data from 11 Indian states, it looks at key issues like the voting behaviour and political activities of Indian women; individual and motivational factors affecting participation; the political socialization of women at home; the role of internalized patriarchy and political opinions; along with the challenges faced by women in attaining representation in Indian politics. An important contribution in the study of voting patterns, this book will be indispensable to scholars and researchers of political studies, women’s studies, gender studies, sociology, Indian politics, political sociology, voting behaviour and South Asian studies. It will also be useful for journalists and activists.

Book Women at the Polls

  • ISBN : 1443807133

Download or read book Women at the Polls written by Cal Clark and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1980, most elections in the United States have been marked by a “gender gap” in which women are more supportive of Democratic candidates than men by nearly ten percentage points. Women at the Polls finds that this gender gap is quite extensive as it exists in almost all demographic groups and as it is based on similar differences in the political attitudes of women and men over a wide array of issues. This suggests that women are becoming an important constituency in U.S. politics.

Book Politicking While Female

Download or read book Politicking While Female written by Nichole M. Bauer and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicking While Female traces the challenges and opportunities that shape the experiences of women who pursue and hold positions of political leadership in the United States. In this volume, Nichole M. Bauer gathers new essays studying the forces that keep women out of political institutions, along with the hurdles faced by female candidates and politicians once they overcome those barriers. Drawing on recent, original data, Politicking While Female examines the life cycle of a woman’s political career. The first section charts the development of political identities that shape women’s participation in politics as voters and as potential candidates, with attention to the patterns of socialization that can discourage women from seeing themselves as political leaders. The next two sections focus on the process of deciding to run for public office, especially the crucial role of mentors, and the challenges female candidates face when campaigning, as they work to raise money, develop effective messages, and overcome voter biases regarding women in leadership roles. The final section explores how women govern once in office, showing the impact of having larger numbers of women in positions of political power. A valuable resource for students, scholars, and voters of all backgrounds, Politicking While Female: The Political Lives of Women offers a comprehensive and accessible collection of essays, supported by new research and analysis, that captures central debates in the study of gender and politics.

Book Political Women in Japan

Download or read book Political Women in Japan written by Susan J. Pharr and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on interviews with one hundred young Japanese women engaged in a spectrum of voluntary political groups, Susan J. Pharr explores how politically active women overcome the constraints that bar or limit the political participation of the average woman. The book treats political volunteers as agents of social change in a process of role redefinition by which prevailing concepts of women's roles gradually adjust to accommodate political behavior. Tracing developments that led to the grant of suffrage and other political rights to women during the Allied occupation, Pharr sets the stage for an analysis of that process as it unfolds in the experience of individual women. She uses women's images of self and society and issues of political and gender role socialization, career and life expectations, and political role and participation to develop a three-fold typology for looking at political women in Japan. She examines both the satisfactions of political volunteerism—from the exhilaration of addressing a crowd from a sound truck to the pleasure of speaking "men's language"—and the psychological and social costs associated with it.
