Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Progress in the Nineteenth Century A more ambitious work followed. AS Maurice had influenced his earlier years, so Burke dominated his later development. For the character and writings Of the great Statesman Mr. Macknight conceived an enthusiasm, which ended only with his life. In The History Of the Life and Times of Edmund Burke, Of which the three volumes were published between 1856 and 1860, he produced a work of great ability, and abiding value. For many years it remained the stand ard authority, and at the time of his death the author was engaged in completing a new edition of it, and an annotated edition of Burke's works, to which several years of patient research had been devoted. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Progress in the Nineteenth Century Mr. Thomas Macknight, who began, but unhappily did not live to complete this volume of "The Nineteenth Century Series was born in Durham in 1829. :He was educated at King's College, London, where he graduated with distinction and was awarded the first 22 prize for an Essay on the Historical Plays of Shakespeare. Among the professors of the College at that time was the Rev. J. F. Denison Maurice, one of the most liberal minded theological writers and influential social reformers of his day. To his wholesome influence Mr. Macknight owed much in the formation-s of his mind and character. During the impression% able years of his College career he acquired not only knowledge, but toleration of judgment, sympathy with the opinions and difficulties of his fellow-men, and an ardent interest in the many movements then springing up for ameliorating the condition, and promoting the happiness of the people. The future Liberal writer and Editor could not have fallen under a more potent or more beneficent influence. In addition to his high scholarship and breadth of opinion, there was a geniality and personal magnetism about Maurice which were peculiarly attractive and winning, and enabled him to create a deep impression upon those with whom he came in contact. Book An Outline of Political Growth in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book An Outline of Political Growth in the Nineteenth Century written by Edmund Hamilton Sears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Political Growth in the Nineteenth Century The nineteenth century has had a peculiarly interesting history. Its achievements have been so rich and varied as to bewilder the mind that tries to apprehend them each and all with clearness and accuracy. In art there has been a return to nature, with many gratifying and some subtle and questionable results. The same tendency has manifested itself in poetry, and is to be traced through such widely differing authors as Wordsworth, Leconte de Lisle, and Pushkin. Both romanticists and realists have made brilliant contributions to fiction, and the decadents have at least called forth a storm of criticism. History has seen the development of the trained specialist and original investigator. Science has fathomed some of nature's deepest secrets and revolutionized industry. And in the domain of politics the people have put forth their strength and obtained constitutions. These are merely a few of the notable movements of the century. All of those that are here enumerated have accomplished vast results, and which of them is the more important and significant cannot be said. Science has effected stupendous changes; but so too have the revolutions in politics been far-reaching and momentous. It is largely through those revolutions that the human mind has been emancipated, deadening tyranny abolished, and science allowed to work its beneficent reforms. It would therefore appear that the political progress of the century has been of a vital and fundamental character, and that the successive triumphs of popular institutions cannot but form a profoundly interesting story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent corporate scandals, the United States is among the world’s least corrupt nations. But in the nineteenth century, the degree of fraud and corruption in America approached that of today’s most corrupt developing nations, as municipal governments and robber barons alike found new ways to steal from taxpayers and swindle investors. In Corruption and Reform, contributors explore this shadowy period of United States history in search of better methods to fight corruption worldwide today. Contributors to this volume address the measurement and consequences of fraud and corruption and the forces that ultimately led to their decline within the United States. They show that various approaches to reducing corruption have met with success, such as deregulation, particularly “free banking,” in the 1830s. In the 1930s, corruption was kept in check when new federal bureaucracies replaced local administrations in doling out relief. Another deterrent to corruption was the independent press, which kept a watchful eye over government and business. These and other facets of American history analyzed in this volume make it indispensable as background for anyone interested in corruption today.

Book The Conservative Press in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century America

Download or read book The Conservative Press in Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century America written by Ronald Lora and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-08-30 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Selecting journals that speak for a very large number of topics addressed by the conservative press, this volume profiles selected conservative journals published since 1787. The conservative press has scarcely spoken with a single voice, whether the topics treated or even the time inhabited are the same or different. Yet, these journals testify to the persistent vigor and importance of conservatism. Together they provide a focused survey of the history of American conservative thought from the late 18th Century to the late 19th Century. Along with the companion volume covering the 20th Century conservative press, the book provides an important resource on conservative thought in America. Despite the disparities in conservative intellectual thought, the journals covered, even the more idiosyncratic and extreme, are connected by their core values of conservatism. The book is organized into sections reflecting these connections. The first section covers journals associated with Federal, Whig, or, in the Civil War era, Northern Democratic political interests. A later section includes journals sharing an attachment to Southern conservative values during the antebellum and Reconstruction periods. Two sections deal, respectively, with 19th Century Orthodox Protestant periodicals and 19th Century Catholic and Episcopal journals, and yet another section discusses journals united by a major focus on literary topics and cultural connections.
