What would this morality look like in a disenchanted world, one in which rationality prevails? The enchanted world is extensive, including not just religion but traditional morality. In this book, Edmund Abegg constructs a coherent path that leads from abstract psychological and moral theory to ideal political and economic scenarios and then to their real-world applications, which for him are in terms of national political goals. These goals, individual autonomy and welfare, function as political morality in this new framework in place of traditional mythical ideas such as justice. Descriptive chapters on our current world indicate that these goals are in play, if only partly. Concerning these national moral-political goals, which may be domestic or international, the crucial distinction he seeks to establish is between aggregated or big-picture goals and individualized goals. The latter are typically seen as establishing individual rights. This book establishes a framework that clarifies important public policy issues in a way not possible if a jungle growth of myth envelopes our efforts with confusion and unnecessary controversies.

Asking and debating about ‘why?’, however, is not the prerogative of scholars; social actors, endowed with thought, reflection and speech, do it too. While we all dance to the beat of genes, emotions, identities and habituated norms, we occasionally stop to ask ‘why?’ The social sciences have been long preoccupied with the ostensibly objective ‘why’ while sidelining the social, intersubjective ‘why?’ This book focuses on the latter, analysing the social actors’ search for justification in their public, political sphere. Justifications, broadly understood, are answers to why-questions given and debated by social actors. The chapters focus on public justifications. While the contributors do not submit that private encounters addressing why-questions do not matter, they choose to put public encounters addressing these questions under scrutiny. Given the ongoing telecommunications revolution, and new political practices associated with it, these public encounters become increasingly pertinent in our evolving political orders. This book originally published as a special issue in Contemporary Politics.

In this book, Susan Mendus seeks to address these important questions to assess whether this apparent tension between morality and politics is real and, if so, why. Beginning with an account of integrity as involving a willingness to stand by ones most fundamental moral commitments, the author discusses three reasons for thinking that politics undermines integrity and is incompatible with morality. These are: the relationship between politics and utilitarian calculation; the possibility that the realm of politics is a separate realm of value; and the difficulty of reconciling the demands of different social roles. She concludes that, in the modern world, we all risk losing our integrity. To that extent, we are all politicians. Moreover, we have reason to be glad that politicians are not always morally good.
