Book excerpt: As a response to the challenges of globalization, nation-states tend to consolidate their political and economic activities in order to cushion the negative effects of such phonomenon. The study will endeavor to determine the effects of regional integration on various political aspects of participating states in international relations taking the European Union as a point of study. Qualitative method such as Content Analysis and Historical methods are utilized to analyze the factors that led to the creation of European Union and the effects of regional integration to the sovereignty of its member states. Result suggests that the European Union with its collaboration with the United States and other regional organizations performs a major role in global politics by utilizing its economic strength and diplomatic representation. European integration began when six European states began to consolidate their coal and steel industries and form a trade bloc for their common interest ; and from having only six member states at the onset, it grew into twenty seven member states and considered as the most successful union of European nation-states. ASEAN integration was founded on the concept of security alliances especially during the zenith of the Cold War that evolved into an economic union of ten nation-states. European Union has different governing institutions, which are categorized as intergovernmental and supranational.
