Book Political Ideals

Download or read book Political Ideals written by C. Delisle Burns and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Ideals: An Essay The thesis I propose to maintain is that modern politics is governed by the conceptions men have of a state of things which would be better than the present. It is my first purpose, therefore, to dis cover the meaning of some of those conceptions. I shall call them Ideals These only among the many facts of politics I propose to study, acknow ledging at the same time that they cannot be studied in isolation from other facts. And secondly I propose to show of each such ideal that it is an inheritance the value of which we cannot estimate unless we know its early development. As we use the mechanical inventions of the past so we are influenced by what the past thought desirable. As we have inherited the use of forks, so we have inherited the use of such words as Liberty and Nationalism. The material resources which we find round us are not any more definite, although to the unseeing eye they may be more, obvious, than the intangible ideals we accept. Book Landmarks of Liberty

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Landmarks of Liberty: The Growth of American Political Ideals as Recorded in Speeches From Otis to Hughes The editors of this book have tried to gather in a single volume as many as possible of the great speeches that have had an important influence on the growth of American political ideals. Had the limits of their volume permitted, they would have begun with Crom well and would have traced the growth of our institu tions from their English sources. As it is they have begun with the first evidence of alienation from the Mother Country and have followed the story to the close of the Great War. Speeches of much historical importance, such as those that discussed the adoption of the Constitution, have necessarily been omitted. The speeches here included, however, it is believed constitute a series sufficiently complete to give stu dents a more intimate knowledge of our national life and a new appreciation of the sacrifice and labor that produced the American political fabric. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IN DARK DAYS, men need a clear faith and a well- grounded hope; and as the outcome of these, the calm courage which takes no account of hardships by the way. The times through which we are passing have afforded to many of us a confirmation of our faith. We see that the things we had thought evil are really evil, and we know more definitely than we ever did before the directions in which men must move if a better world is to arise on the ruins of the one which is now hurling itself into destruction. We see that men's political dealings with one another are based on wholly wrong ideals, and can only be saved by quite different ideals from continuing to be a source of suffering, devastation, and sin. 'Political Ideals' was written during the upheaval of World War One. It is, in many ways, a statement, of Russell's beliefs, a declaration of the ideas that in uenced his thinking on the major events of the 20th century. In this sense, it is essential reading for every student of this great philosopher. Man, however, is born with a common vague notion in place of this precise and particularized instinct. To that general notion he applies reason and thus is able to take care of himself. He, too, discovers the herbs that cure his diseases, but as the result of a process of reasoning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
