Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Literary, Moral and Political Some people are subject to a certain delicacy of passion, which makes them extremely sensible to all the accidents of life, and gives them a lively joy upon every prosperous event, as well as a piercing grief, when they meet with misfortunes and adversity. Favours and good offices easily engage their friendship while the smallest injury provokes their resentment. Any honour or mark of distinction elevates them above measure; but they are as sensibly touched with contempt. People of this character have, no doubt, more lively enjoyments, as well as more pungent sorrows, than men of cool and sedate tempers but, I believe, when everything is balanced, there is no one, who would not rather be of the latter character, were he entirely master of his own disposition. Good or ill fortune Is very little at our disposal: and when a pe_r_son. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays: Moral, Economical, and Political The illustrious Author of these Essays is so generally known as a man and a writer, that any particular account of him on the present occasion would be superfluous. To dwell, indeed, on the incidents of my Lord Bacon's life, would be an unpleasant and mortifying task: for ever must it be deplored by the lover of literature and his species, that the possessor of this extraordinary intellect should have been exposed to the dangers of a situation, to which his firmness was unequal; and, withdrawn from the retirement of his study, where he was the first of men, should have been thrown into the tumult of business, where he discovered himself to be among the last. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays Moral, Political, and Literary, Vol. 1 of 2 Most of the principles, and reasonings, contained in this volume, were published in a work in three volumes, called A Treatise of Human Nature A work which the Author had projected before he left College, and which he wrote and published not long after. But not finding it successful, he was sensible of his error in going to the press too early, and he cast the whole anew in the following pieces, where some negligences in his former reasoning and more in the expres sion, are, he hopes, corrected. Yet several writers, who have honoured the Author's Philosophy with answers, have taken care to direct all their batteries against the juvenile work, which the Author never acknowledged, and have affected to triumph in any advantages, which, they imagined, they had obtained over it: A practice very contrary to all rules of candour and fair-dealing, and a strong instance of those polemical artifices, which a bigotted zeal thinks itself author ised to employ. Henceforth, the Author desires, that the following Pieces may alone be regarded as containing his philosophical sentiments and principles.' Doth any man doubt, that if there were taken out of men's minds vain opinions, flattering hopes, false valuations, imaginations as one, would, and the like, but it would leave the minds of a number of men poor shrunken things, full of melancholy and indisposition, and unpleasing to themselves? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays, Historical, Moral, Political, and Agricultural The following Essays are extracts from productions, written between the years 1803 and 1825; not, however, with a design to the press: but on reviewing, it was thought they might be of publick utility; and in revising, such parts have been selected, as were supposed to be most conducive to that end. When speaking of different religions I have given that of Jesus Christ the preference. When speaking of sects, no distinction has been made. This is not the business of a politician. Indeed, it does not come within his province. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Essays on the Principles of Morality

Download or read book Essays on the Principles of Morality written by Jonathan Dymond and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on the Principles of Morality: And on the Private and Political Rights and Obligations of Mankind The Author of this Work died in the spring of 1828, leaving in manuscript the three Essays of which it consists. We learn from himself that the undertaking originated in a belief (in which he probably is far from being alone) that the existing treatises on Moral Philosophy did not exhibit the principles nor enforce the obligations of morality in all their perfection and purity; that a work was yet wanted which should present a true and authoritative standard of rectitude - one by an appeal to which the moral character of human actions might be rightly estimated. This he here endeavours to supply. Rejecting what he considered the false grounds of duty, and erroneous principles of action which are proposed in the most prominent and most generally received of our extant theories of moral obligation, he proceeds to erect a system of morality upon what he regards as the only true and legitimate basis - the Will of God. He makes, therefore, the authority of the Deity the sole ground of duty, and His communicated Will the only ultimate standard of right and wrong; and assumes, "that wheresoever this Will is made known, human duty is determined; - and that neither the conclusions of philosophers, nor advantages, nor dangers, nor pleasures, nor sufferings, ought to have any opposing influence in regulating our conduct." The attempt to establish a system of such uncompromising morality, must necessarily bring the writer into direct collision with the advocates of the utilitarian scheme, particularly with Dr. Paley; and accordingly it will be found that he frequently enters the lists with this great champion of Expediency. With what success - how well he exposes the fallacies of that specious but dangerous doctrine - how far he succeeds in refuting the arguments by which it is sought to be maintained, and in establishing another system of obligations and duties and rights upon a more stable foundation, must be left to the reader to determine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political Essays There are two ways of evading the respon sibility of such inconsistency. The first is by an appeal to the Society's Constitution, and by claiming to interpret it strictly in accordance with the rules of law as applied to contracts, whether between individuals or states. The second is by denying that Slavery is opposed to the genius of Christianity, and that any moral wrongs are the necessary results of it. We will not be so unjust to the Society as to suppose that any of its members would rely on this latter plea, and shall therefore confine ourselves to a brief consideration of the other. C 2. Civil authority is the supreme power of command in a perfect community of the temporal order. A perfect community is selfsufficient, airdpKrjs. It is not referred to any other community as a part to the whole. It takes the law from no other: it is a community with sovereignty inherent somewhere within itself. It supplies, or is capable of supplying, all its own earthly needs. Were the rest of mankind to perish, it could still subsist, and flourish in some sort. Such a perfect community is the State. The State may be either a city or a nation: a city with a small adjacent territory, as the cities of ancient Greece and of mediaeval Italy, or a nation, as States commonly are now. Civil authority is supreme, final, ultimate, in a State as such. 3. Download or read book Historical and Political Essays Classic Reprint written by William Edward Hartpole Lecky and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Political Essays When Mr. Lecky had finished his last work, The Leaders of Public Opinion in Ireland, ' he did not intend to write another long book. His health was broken he had said most of what he wished to say. But he proposed collect ing in a volume a few Essays which he had written at different times. As concentration was to him one of the first conditions of good work, he did not often allow his attention to be diverted from the book he was writing by giving addresses or contributing articles to reviews or magazines, unless he had some special reason for doing so. The number is, therefore, small. E began revising them; and made some additions to Thoughts on istory, ' 'the Empire, ' 'the Memoir of the Fifteenth Earl of Derby, ' Queen Victoria as a Moral Force but he unfortunately did not live to complete the revision of the others. In publishing this volume I have endeavoured to carry out his intentions. Besides the Essays which he had revised, I have included all that seemed to me to possess a permanent value. Even though some of them deal with questions of the day, the philosophic spirit in which they are treated may give them more than a transitory interest, and the forcible arguments that are adduced may still have weight in the future.
