Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political and Military Events in British India, Vol. 1: From the Years 1756 to 1849 It is presumed that the subject of Indian affairs must be interesting to all those now in the ser vice of the East India. Company; to those who have retired from it; and likewise to persons who may hereafter enter the military profession in India. To the relations and friends of all the above classes, even, the present publication may not be without its value. The earlier period of the East India Company's connexion with India, when only possessed of factories, and in the character of merchants trading to the East Indies, was important chiefly in a mercantile and commercial point of view; deprived of the trade of India and of the trade to China they assumed a new character - that of sovereigns. Book Narrative of the Political and Military Transactions of British India Under the Administration of the Marquess of Hastings 1813 to 1818 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Narrative of the Political and Military Transactions of British India Under the Administration of the Marquess of Hastings 1813 to 1818 Classic Reprint written by Henry Thoby Prinsep and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of the Political and Military Transactions of British India, Under the Administration of the Marquess of Hastings, 1813 to 1818 Hands, the train of events, of which a faithful and plain relation is here submitted, might have been wrought into a form, that would have awakened a lively interest in the general, as well as the curious or interested reader. The facts recorded are both singular and important; the only circumstances, that can give a legitimate attraction to a work of the historical class. But Indian habits and occupations, -as well as the example of his precursors, prevent the narrator from anticipating much success, except with those of his readers, whose attention may be excited by the recollection of Indian scenes, wherein they have them selves borne a part, or by the tie of kindred with the present; actors upon that wide field for British energy. Book excerpt: Robert Clive (1725–1774), later Baron Clive of Plassey, is widely considered the founder of British India. He arrived in Madras as a clerk for the East India Company in 1744. Through timely promotion and a clear affinity for military leadership, he proceeded to consolidate the company's commercial and territorial position in South India before doing the same in the northeast in Bengal. In 1757 company troops under his command defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey. This victory set in motion the East India Company's ascendancy over much of India and eventual development into the world's largest transnational trading company at the time. This paved the way for the 1857 creation of the British Raj, which would last for another ninety years. Clive is a fascinating and important historical figure: a lowly company employee who rose to great heights; an informally trained military commander who led company and local Indian troops to a series of stirring victories over local rivals who were supported by the French; a grasping politician who used his great wealth to secure a prominent social position; and, finally, a hounded society notable who, plagued by illness, allegedly took his own life. No one in the early days of the British ventures in India was as well known or as controversial as Clive. Today, when empire and globalism are witnessed and talked about with ease, Clive's position as both a servant of the East India Company and an agent of imperialism makes him a surprisingly resonant figure.

Download or read book The Ruling Caste written by David Gilmour and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-06-12 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sparkling, provocative history of the English in South Asia during Queen Victoria's reign Between 1837 and 1901, less than 100,000 Britons at any one time managed an empire of 300 million people spread over the vast area that now includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Burma. How was this possible, and what were these people like? The British administration in India took pride in its efficiency and broad-mindedness, its devotion to duty and its sense of imperial grandeur, but it has become fashionable to deprecate it for its arrogance and ignorance. In this balanced, witty, and multi-faceted history, David Gilmour goes far to explain the paradoxes of the "Anglo-Indians," showing us what they hoped to achieve and what sort of society they thought they were helping to build. The Ruling Caste principally concerns the officers of the legendary India Civil Service--each of whom to perform as magistrate, settlement officer, sanitation inspector, public-health officer, and more for the million or so people in his charge. Gilmour extends his study to every level of the administration and to the officers' women and children, so often ignored in previous works. The Ruling Caste is the best book yet on the real trials and triumphs of an imperial ruling class; on the dangerous temptations that an empire's power encourages; on relations between governor and governed, between European and Asian. No one interested in politics and social history can afford to miss this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As it enters its sixtieth year of independence, India stands on the threshold of superpower status. Yet India is strikingly different from all other global colossi. While it is the world's most populous democracy and enjoys the benefits of its internationally competitive high-tech and software industries, India also contends with extremes of poverty, inequality, and political and religious violence. This accessible and vividly written book presents a new interpretation of India's history, focusing particular attention on the impact of British imperialism on Independent India. Maria Misra begins with the rebellion against the British in 1857 and tracks the country's advance to the present day. India's extremes persist, the author argues, because its politics rest upon a peculiar foundation in which traditional ideas of hierarchy, difference, and privilege coexist to a remarkable degree with modern notions of equality and democracy. The challenge of India's leaders today, as in the last sixty years, is to weave together the disparate threads of the nation's ancient culture, colonial legacy, and modern experience.
