Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising Subjects explores the change of the public sphere in Russian Poland during the 1905 Revolution. The 1905 Revolution was one of the few bottom-up political transformations and general democratizations in Polish history. It was a popular rebellion fostering political participation of the working class. The infringement of previously carefully guarded limits of the public sphere triggered a powerful conservative reaction among the commercial and landed elites, and frightened the intelligentsia. Polish nationalists promised to eliminate the revolutionary “anarchy” and gave meaning to the sense of disappointment after the revolution. This study considers the 1905 Revolution as a tipping point for the ongoing developments of the public sphere. It addresses the question of Polish socialism, nationalism, and antisemitism. It demonstrates the difficulties in using the class cleavage for democratic politics in a conflict-ridden, multiethnic polity striving for an irredentist self-assertion against the imperial power.

Book Practical Handbook of the Polish Language

Download or read book Practical Handbook of the Polish Language written by Joseph Francis Baluta and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-11 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Handbook of the Polish Language: Containing the Alphabet; Pronunciation Fluency Exercises; Rules of Grammar Various Conversations; Comprehensive Vocabulary of Words in Daily Use The second part deals with the so-called Fluency Exercises. The scheme is explained in detail in the introduction to the series. The author believes that a complete and thorough mastery of this section will help the learner to establish a correct pronuncia tion and accent of Polish words, and at the same time acquaint him with some of the grammar in a practical way. Grammar is the subject of the next divis10n. Here no attempt has been made to give an exhaust ive treatise on Polish grammar, but rather some condensed information about the principal points of it. This part may be well used in conjunction with the Fluency Exercises. Perhaps the most useful section of the manual may be found in the fourth part. A glance at the table of contents will show the number of practical phrases and conversations which have been em bodied here. Care has been exercised to include nothing but practical subjects. The language used is the language of everyday life. It is. True that all the possible subjects were not included, - the limits of the book did not permit of that, - yet there will be found here enough material to meet all ordinary occasions. The vocabulary at the end of the book contains a comprehensive list of words in daily use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795

Download or read book The Polish Lithuanian State 1386 1795 written by Daniel Z. Stone and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For four centuries, the PolishLithuanian state encompassed a major geographic region comparable to present-day Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Estonia, and Romania. Governed by a constitutional monarchy that offered the numerous nobility extensive civil and political rights, it enjoyed unusual domestic tranquility, for its military strength kept most enemies at bay until the mid-seventeenth century and the country generally avoided civil wars. Selling grain and timber to western Europe helped make it exceptionally wealthy for much of the period. The PolishLithuanian State, 13861795 is the first account in English devoted specifically to this important era. It takes a regional rather than a national approach, considering the internal development of the Ukrainian, Jewish, Lithuanian, and Prussian German nations that coexisted with the Poles in this multinational state. Presenting Jewish history also clarifies urban history, because Jews lived in the unincorporated "private cities" and suburbs, which historians have overlooked in favor of incorporated "royal cities." In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the private cities and suburbs often thrived while the inner cities decayed. The book also traces the institutional development of the Roman Catholic Church in PolandLithuania, one of the few European states to escape bloody religious conflict during the Reformation and Counter Reformation. Both seasoned historians and general readers will appreciate the many excellent brief biographies that advance the narrative and illuminate the subject matter of this comprehensive and absorbing volume.
