Book Public History in Poland

Download or read book Public History in Poland written by Joanna Wojdon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents various aspects of public history practices in Poland, alongside their historical development and theoretical reflections on public history. Despite a long tradition and variety of forms of public history, the very term "public history", or literally speaking "history in the public sphere", has been in use in Poland only since the 2010s. This edited collection contains chapters that focus on numerous practices and media forms in public history including historical memory, heritage tourism, historical re-enactments, memes and graphic novels, films, archives, archaeology and oral history. As such, the volume brings together the Polish experiences to wider international audiences and shares Polish controversies related to public history within the academic discourse, beyond media news and politically engaged commentaries. Furthermore, it sheds crucial light on the developments of collective memory, historical and political debates, the history of Poland and East-Central Europe, and the politics of post-World War Two and post-communist societies. Authored by a team of academic historians and practitioners from the field, Public History in Poland is the perfect resource for students from a variety of disciplines including Public History, Heritage, Museum Studies, Anthropology, and Archaeology.

Book National Museums

Download or read book National Museums written by Simon Knell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: National Museums is the first book to explore the national museum as a cultural institution in a range of contrasting national contexts. Composed of new studies of countries that rarely make a showing in the English-language studies of museums, this book reveals how these national museums have been used to create a sense of national self, place the nation in the arts, deal with the consequences of political change, remake difficult pasts, and confront those issues of nationalism, ethnicity and multiculturalism which have come to the fore in national politics in recent decades. National Museums combines research from both leading and new researchers in the fields of history, museum studies, cultural studies, sociology, history of art, media studies, science and technology studies, and anthropology. It is an interrogation of the origins, purpose, organisation, politics, narratives and philosophies of national museums.

Book Chicago s Polish Downtown

Download or read book Chicago s Polish Downtown written by Victoria Granacki and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-21 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrating the first 75 years of Chicago's influential Polish neighborhood. Polish Downtown is Chicago's oldest Polish settlement and was the capital of American Polonia from the 1870s through the first half of the 20th century. Nearly all Polish undertakings of any consequence in the U.S. during that time either started or were directed from this part of Chicago's near northwest side. Chicago's Polish Downtown features some of the most beautiful churches in Chicago - St. Stanislaus Kostka, Holy Trinity and St. John Cantius - stunning examples of Renaissance and Baroque Revival architecture that form part of the largest concentration of Polish parishes in Chicago. The headquarters for almost every major Polish organization in America were clustered within blocks of each other and four Polish-language daily newspapers were published here. The heart of the photographic collection in this book is from the extensive library and archives of the Polish Museum of America, still located in the neighborhood today.

Book The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth

Download or read book The Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth written by Andrzej Chwalba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a fresh perspective of the history and legacy of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as the often-disputed memory of it in contemporary Europe. The unions between the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania have fascinated many readers particularly because many solutions that have been implemented in the European Union have been adopted from its Central and Eastern European predecessor. The collection of essays presented in this volume are divided into three parts – the Beginnings of Poland-Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Legacy and Memory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – and represent a selection of the papers delivered at the Third Congress of International Researchers of Polish History which was held in Cracow on 11-14 October 2017. Through their application of different historiographical perspectives and schools of history they offer the reader a fresh take on the Commonwealth’s history and legacy, as well as the memory of it in the countries that are its inheritors, namely Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Belarus and Ukraine. An exploration of one of the biggest countries in Early Modern Europe, this will be of interest to historians, political scientists, cultural anthropologists and other scholars of the history of Central and Eastern Europe in the Early Modern period.

Book Museums Narratives and Critical Histories

Download or read book Museums Narratives and Critical Histories written by Kerstin Barndt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-03-04 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to systemic racism and institutions’ implications in histories of colonialism, nationalism, and exclusion, museum curators have embraced new ways of storytelling to face entangled memories and histories. Critical museum practices have consciously sought to unsettle established forms of representation, break with linear narratives of progress, and experiment with new modes of multivocal, multimedia, and subjective storytelling. The volume features analyses of narratives and narration in museums and heritage institutions today, as well as visions for future museum practices on a local, regional, national, transnational, and global scale. It is divided into three sections: Narrative Theory and Temporality, Ruptures and Repair, and Difficult Memories and Histories. Essays from a variety of disciplines in the humanities and social sciences examine museum practices in history, memorial, anthropological, and art museums across six continents. They develop narratological categories, reflect on immersive and virtual narratives, challenge colonial violence and hegemonic forms of representation, query the performance of heritage, parse exhibition design, and unearth techniques to express narratives of social justice.

Book Museums of Communism

  • Author : Stephen M. Norris

Download or read book Museums of Communism written by Stephen M. Norris and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did communities come to terms with the collapse of communism? In order to guide the wider narrative, many former communist countries constructed museums dedicated to chronicling their experiences. Museums of Communism explores the complicated intersection of history, commemoration, and victimization made evident in these museums constructed after 1991. While contributors from a diverse range of fields explore various museums and include nearly 90 photographs, a common denominator emerges: rather than focusing on artifacts and historical documents, these museums often privilege memories and stories. In doing so, the museums shift attention from experiences of guilt or collaboration to narratives of shared victimization under communist rule. As editor Stephen M. Norris demonstrates, these museums are often problematic at best and revisionist at worst. From occupation museums in the Baltic States to memorial museums in Ukraine, former secret police prisons in Romania, and nostalgic museums of everyday life in Russia, the sites considered offer new ways of understanding the challenges of separating memory and myth.

Book Arts Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Download or read book Arts Entrepreneurship and Innovation written by Joanna Woronkowicz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-10-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third publication out of the Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (AEI) Lab that focuses exclusively on research that empirically investigates crossovers between arts, entrepreneurship and innovation. This volume does so specifically by using the lens of cultural economics. The chapters in this volume have been chosen not only because they have clear implications for policy and practice, but also because they contribute to theories of value creation in the cultural and creative industries. As a whole, this book addresses relationships between arts, entrepreneurship and innovation for workers, firms, and industry to bring clarity to how value is created in the arts. Previously published in Journal of Cultural Economics Volume 45, issue 4, December 2021 Chapters “Direct Memberships in Foreign Copyright Collecting Societies as an Entrepreneurial Opportunity for Music Publishers – Needs, Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions” and “Do Museums Foster Innovation Through Engagement with the Cultural and Creative Industries?” are available open access under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License via link.springer.com.
