This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change in the socio-economic system and then the accession of Poland to the European Union as well as globalization changed the Polish agriculture demonstrating, at the same time, a number of its weaknesses. Transformations taking place in agriculture are significant not only in economic but also in social terms, especially in the context of ensuring food safety as well as performing functions of a non-market nature by the segment of the economy. The premise for substantiating the need to analyze changes in agriculture is also large support for this sector from public funds. For this reason, the possibilities to make development processes in agriculture more dynamic are of particular significance. In the paper results of a statistical-descriptive analysis of the process of structural transformations in agriculture in the first decade of the 21st century as well as factors determining the pace and directions of changes taking place are presented. The reasoning was based on selected indicators describing changes in basic agricultural structures which determine the economic potential and competitive capacities of agricultural farms to the main extent. Due to the significant regional diversity of the Polish agriculture, changes in the structures of the agricultural sector were also analyzed from this perspective. The paper refers to individual agriculture, constituting the dominant segment of the agricultural sector in Poland. It was based on data from common statistics as well as results of representative field studies conducted periodically by the Institute of Agricultural and Food Economics - National Research Institute (IERiGŻ-PIB) on a sample of approx. 0.2% of the actual number of individual farms.

Book The Functioning of the Food Supply Chain and Its Effect on Food Prices in the European Union

Download or read book The Functioning of the Food Supply Chain and Its Effect on Food Prices in the European Union written by Lina Bukeviciute and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sharp fluctuations in food price inflation at a time of great uncertainty about the economic outlook have raised questions about the functioning of the European food supply chain. While the observed changes in food prices in EU Member States can be linked to developments in the global demand and supply for agricultural commodities, inefficiencies in the functioning of the food supply chain, in terms of competition and regulation, may have played an important role as well. In particular, an analysis of the transmission mechanisms linking agricultural commodity prices with producer and consumer prices shows that the shock caused by the upsurge in agricultural commodities and energy prices in the second half of 2007 and the first half of 2008 was absorbed differently across EU Member States. Crosscountry differences in the regulatory framework appear to have contributed to this fragmentation of the European Single Market. Moreover, there are indications of differences in the conditions of competition across Member States. Finally, consolidation is taking place throughout the food supply chain. While such consolidation can lead to efficiency gains, it may also worsen the conditions of competition to the detriment of consumers and businesses. Keywords: Food, regulation, market structure, competition, pricing. -- (provided by publisher).

Book Has the EU Support to the Food processing Industry Been Effective and Efficient in Adding Value to Agricultural Products

Download or read book Has the EU Support to the Food processing Industry Been Effective and Efficient in Adding Value to Agricultural Products written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As part of the EU's rural development policy grants are made available to enterprises that process and market agricultural products, which should also result in improving the competitiveness of the agricultural sector. The Court's audit examined whether the EU support had been effective and efficient in this respect, but found that member states do not direct the funding to projects for which there is a demonstrable need for public support. Without this, the measure risks becoming a handout--a general support to enterprises investing in the food-processing sector--with the attendant risks of distortion of competition and inefficient use of scarce public money. The Court provided recommendations that should allow the Commission and the member states to remedy the weaknesses mentioned."--Container.

Book Oecd Review of Agricultural Policies

Download or read book Oecd Review of Agricultural Policies written by and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With open trade and few price-distorting policies, Bulgaria is well on the route to laying down a sound foundation for improving the efficiency and competitiveness of its agro-food sector in preparation for accession to the European Union. However, a number of challenges remain. These include: establishing a functioning land market, reducing excess capacity in the food processing sector and encouraging investment in the agro-food industry. Another high priority is to accelerate economic growth and the development of off-farm employment opportunities for those leaving agriculture. The Review analyses developments since the 40-year monopoly of the communist party ended in 1989. It evaluates key structural issues, examines emerging policy developments and provides detailed estimates of support to agriculture, using the OECD s Producer and Consumer Support Estimates (PSEs/CSEs). The study also discusses current policy options for Bulgarian agriculture within the framework of the EU s Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (SAPARD). For those involved in central and eastern European agriculture and agro-food policies, markets and trade, the Review offers unique information and analysis. Policy-makers, businesses and researchers will find it an invaluable reference for a long time to come.
