At the same time huge challenges concerning citizenship, democracy, and participation still exist in the country. This study engages with one of the struggles: the struggle for an ethnically and racially just Brazil. Taking Brazilian Education Law 10.639 as object of study, this book explores the question of what policy discourses and multi-scalar interactions influence the process of curriculum development with regard to ethnicity/race and education in Brazil. The findings show that the increased inter-scalar and multi-scalar dynamics in the globalized world present new opportunities for Brazilian civil society actors for getting attention for ethnic/racial inequality. However, even considering the fact that Brazil is far ahead compared to many other countries, huge political and pedagogical challenges still exist regarding the process of curriculum development around ethnicity/race in the country."--Samenvatting auteur.

It gives an overview of school policy developments that represents the diversity of Europe within a comparative framework. It takes point of departure in the fact that European countries in their school and education policies have been increasingly aligning with each other, mostly via transnational collaborations, the OECD, EU, and the Bologna Process. Even the IEA has been instrumental to motivate alignments by means of influential surveys, knowledge production and methodological development. This alignment in terms of common standards, social technologies, qualification frameworks and so forth have aimed at facilitating mobility of students, workers, business and so forth as well as fostering a European identity among citizens from Europe’s patchwork of small and medium-size countries, representing a patchwork of different languages, cultures and societal contexts. In national recontextualizations, however, alignments have been continuously contested according to the particularities of what has been possible educationally and politically in the different national contexts. Furthermore, the return of national(isms) as well as the rise of edubusiness and digitalization have been increasingly influential. This book thus concludes that increasing transnational alignments have to be observed with meticulous attention to different national contexts that matter greatly.

The ‘poor child’ at the centre of development activity is often measured against and reformed towards an idealised and globalised child subject. This book examines why such normative discourses of childhood are in need of radical revision and explores how development research and practice can work to ‘unsettle’ the global child. It engages the cultural politics of childhood – a politics of equality, identity and representation – as a methodological and theoretical orientation to rethink the relationships between education, development, and poverty in children’s lives. This book brings multiple disciplinary perspectives, including cultural studies, sociology, and film studies, into conversation with development studies and development education in order to provide new ways of approaching and conceptualising the ‘poor child’.
