Book Policy Challenges for Agriculture and Rural Areas in Norway

Download or read book Policy Challenges for Agriculture and Rural Areas in Norway written by Philip Hemmings and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwegian policy gives high priority to supporting rural communities, with support for agriculture receiving particular attention. It is broadly successful in terms of maintaining rural communities, and urban-rural gaps in a range of well-being indicators are comparatively narrow. However, the cost-efficiency and sustainability of the policy mechanisms are questionable. Agriculture and rural policy in Norway needs to focus more strongly on economic sustainability alongside social sustainability. Agricultural support remains overly concentrated on maintaining the status quo and has seen little reform compared with policies elsewhere in the OECD. In contrast, the fishing industry has reformed much further towards economic sustainability, aquaculture has seen considerable success and there is potential for more rural tourism. Supporting rural communities also requires attention to the quality of public services in rural areas, and this report draws particular attention to inefficiencies arising from small-scale municipalities, and supports efforts to encourage mergers towards larger units, paving the way for greater operational leeway for municipal government. This working paper relates to the 2016 OECD Economic Survey of Norway (www.oecd.org/eco/surveys/economic-survey-norway.htm).

Book The Political Economy of Rural Development

Download or read book The Political Economy of Rural Development written by Ottar Brox and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Rural Development argues for a new analysis of rural economic growth patterns, based on research the author conducted in Scandinavia. Ottar Brox reverses a long-standing conviction in urban planning theory by asserting that improving the economic opportunities for individuals in rural areas is an indirect investment in urban hubs. Peasant resistance, he reveals, is the logical result of urban neglect of local interests. The Political Economy of Rural Development is a convincing argument for new, localized economic strategies and will be invaluable to those interested in rural planning and economics.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Norway's Nutrition and Food Policy, begun in 1975, aims to provide wholesome food and increase agricultural self-sufficiency, largely by increasing agricultural productivity in disadvantaged areas. This and related Norwegian agricultural policies are explored for implications for the United States. Data on food consumption patterns in Norway, especially fat consumption, and their relation to health are presented. The main tools to implement the policy are consumer education and price policies. Alternatives for increasing domestic food production include expanding cultivated area and improving yields.
