Book excerpt: Policing, Race, and the Formation of Nineteenth-Century British Colonial Natal traces the creation, implementation, and evolution of the police institutions within British colonial Natal during ‘the formative period’ of the colony between 1845 and 1899. It examines how white and Black members of Natal’s colonial community formed their own systems of policing, creating structures of control that combined ideas from across multiple continents that illustrated the way imperial rule was not directed exclusively from the imperial metropole, but instead part of a complex mixing of indigenous and colonial ideals in the forging of colonial Natal. This influence had enormous ramifications for the police institutions in South Africa well into the twentieth century. Using numerous case studies involving the organization, actions, and influence of the police in Natal, this work provides examples of Black power and authority, prison escapes, violence by and against the constabulary, and recruitment and logistics within the colonial police. In the end, it places the history of KwaZulu-Natal centrally into the emergence of British imperial rule in South Africa in the nineteenth century.

Klaudia Hiu Yen investigates the multifarious ways in which Dickens’s works were adapted, reconfigured, and transformed for the Chinese readership against the turbulent political and social conditions in the last stages of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912) and the early Republic (1912-1949). Moving beyond the 'Response to the West’ model which often characterises East-West interactions, Lee explores how Chinese intellectuals viewed Dickens’s novels as performing a particular social function; on occasion, they were used to advance the country’s social and political causes. Translation and adaptation became a means through which the politics and social values of the original Dickens texts were undermined or even subverted. Situating the early introduction of Dickens to China within the broader field of Victorian studies, Lee challenges some of the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of the ’global’ turn, both in Dickens scholarship and in Victorian studies in general.

It carried a far-reaching agenda of legal reform that arose from the need to manage colonised peoples in an Empire where the demands of humane governance jostled with colonial growth.
