This book was released on 1985 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review was undertaken of the serious problem of youth unemployment in the countries of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) (most of the countries of Europe and the United States), and the means for dealing with it in the longer term. The study found that youth unemployment has been a major concern since the mid-1970s, rising with each downturn of the economy, and failing to recover with economic recovery. Today, unemployment for disadvantaged youth has increased, but so has unemployment among better-educated and better-trained young people, especially for those born in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Labor force participation rates for youth have dropped in nearly all the countries, especially among teenagers. Young women have experienced similar rates of unemployment as young men; however, causes are subtle and often relate to the types of jobs for which girls are trained. Nations should adapt policies to help youths find employment. One solution is economic growth, but even an annual growth of 4 percent will not solve the youth umemployment problem for about five years. Consequently, shorter-term policies, such as school or travel grants or government-sponsored jobs, are needed to help youth. Especially at risk are disabled youth, whose unemployment problem is even worse than that of the disadvantaged. Additionally, sex-fair educational practices should be started to help young women prepare for careers. Youth unemployment is a very serious problem that cannot be ignored by the countries of the OECD. The appendices consist of an article by L. C. Hunter (The Role of Labour Demand in Youth Employment and Unemployment) and an OECD committee report. (KC)

Ross Fergusson and Nicola Yeates argue that only by incorporating analysis of the dynamics of the global economy and global governance can we make convincing, comprehensive sense of these developments. The authors present substantial new evidence spanning a century pointing to the strong relationships between youth unemployment, globalisation, economic crises and consequent harms to young people’s social and economic welfare worldwide. The book notably encompasses data and analysis spanning the Global South as well as the Global North.

Book Youth Employment and Joblessness in Advanced Countries

Download or read book Youth Employment and Joblessness in Advanced Countries written by David G. Blanchflower and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic status of young people has declined significantly over the past two decades, despite a variety of programs designed to aid new workers in the transition from the classroom to the job market. This ongoing problem has proved difficult to explain. Drawing on comparative data from Canada, Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, these papers go beyond examining only employment and wages and explore the effects of family background, education and training, social expectations, and crime on youth employment. This volume brings together key studies, providing detailed analyses of the difficult economic situation plaguing young workers. Why have demographic changes and additional schooling failed to resolve youth unemployment? How effective have those economic policies been which aimed to improve the labor skills and marketability of young people? And how have youths themselves responded to the deteriorating job market confronting them? These questions form the empirical and organizational bases upon which these studies are founded.
