Book Policies for Cleaner Technology

Download or read book Policies for Cleaner Technology written by Tony Clayton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clean technology does not just aim to dilute or detoxify industrial waste. It aims to eliminate it by re-engineering the entire production cycle. As industry is constrained by regulations on the one hand and consumer pressure on the other, energy-efficient, resource-efficient and pollution-free production becomes imperative. It will be the next stage of industrial development. Using extensive empirical analysis of a range of different industrial sectors, this book shows how cleaner technology can be implemented, above all by the companies themselves. It looks at regulatory initiatives and focuses on how firms themselves can introduce the new technologies, systems and polices required.

Book Green Technology Adoption in Response to Environmental Policies

Download or read book Green Technology Adoption in Response to Environmental Policies written by Bryan Bollinger and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New technologies are crucial in dealing with the problem of air and water pollution, which is an increasingly important issue with serious health and environmental consequences. However, adoption of environmentally friendly technologies can be slow if the new technologies are not superior in terms of the firms' private incentives, if firms have long equipment replacement cycles, or if firms do not have sufficient information to evaluate whether or not a switch to a green technology is in their private interests. To evaluate these potential explanations and the policies designed to address them, I use an importance sampling technique with simulated maximum likelihood estimation to estimate two separate dynamic, durable good replacement models with entry and exit for garment cleaning firms in southern California, where alternative cleaning technologies have seen only limited adoption to date. The first model is a single-agent model, whereas the second model allows firms' profits to depend on the states of their competitors. I utilize a unique data set comprised of equipment permitting information, grant recipient lists, and product demonstration attendance lists, and I control for and exploit changing legislation to estimate the effect of fees and incentives on green equipment purchases, as well as the effect of the product demonstrations. The single-agent models are used to perform counterfactual analyses to compare the predicted adoption and entry/exit decisions by firms under different regulatory regimes. While the models are tailored to the garment cleaning industry, it can be adapted to other applications involving the diffusion of technologies in regulated industries.

Book Clean Technology

Download or read book Clean Technology written by Allan Johansson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1992-08-26 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to pressure from government regulations, the design and development of new manufacturing processes are shifting to pollution prevention and waste reduction at the source through the implementation of proper process and product design. Clean Technology incorporates ideas for pollution prevention/waste reduction at the early stages of process design and development. It covers guidelines for development projects, provides background information, and presents general principles for sound engineering together with pollution reduction alternatives. Industrial and hazardous waste, process engineering, energy systems, materials and product design, recycling, and biodegradability are among the subjects discussed. Market mechanisms, economy in production, and policy questions are also covered. Clean Technology will be an important reference for environmental engineers, process and design engineers, consultants, students, and libraries. It provides engineers, consultants, and students with background and techniques for improved waste reduction and pollution control through proper engineering. It will also be a valuable textbook for advanced engineering programs that are working within today's environmental policies.

Book The Impact of Environmental Policy on Innovation in Clean Technologies

Download or read book The Impact of Environmental Policy on Innovation in Clean Technologies written by Johannes Eugster and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-08-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the effect of climate change mitigating policies on innovation in clean energy technologies. Results suggest that the tightening of environmental policies since the early 1990s have made a statistically and economically significant contribution to the increase in clean innovation. These effects generally materialized quickly, within 2 to 3 years of the policy change, and were driven by individually significant marginal effects of both market-based policies – such as feed-in tariffs and trading schemes – as well as non-market policies, such as R&D subsidies or emission limits. Looking at electricity innovation in particular, the paper finds that the estimated effect on total innovation is positive on net, meaning that increased innovation in clean and grey technologies is not offset by a decrease in innovation in dirty technologies. From a policy point of view, the paper’s results call for strong policy efforts to decisively shift innovation towards clean technologies.

Book Cleaner Production for Safe and Sustainable Living on Earth

Download or read book Cleaner Production for Safe and Sustainable Living on Earth written by Rajiv Kumar Sinha and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleaner production is defined as the continuous application of an integrated preventive strategy for environmental protection in the developmental processes applied to products and services in industries & business organizations to increase overall efficiency and reduce risks to humans (consumers and industrial workers) and the environment from the hazardous chemicals and materials used in the production process. Cleaner production requires applying know-how, improving technology and changing attitudes. Since 1950, there has been a tremendous increase in the production of diverse chemicals to satisfy our demands for consumer goods. According to the UNEP, worldwide nearly 80,000 chemicals are used every day and about 1500 new chemicals are added every year. A green chemistry movement is going on to develop environmentally benign chemicals and chemical processes to be applied in chemical industries and industries depending on chemicals such as paper, plastic, textile, dyeing, printing, photography, agriculture, and electronics. Clean air, water and food are the basis of life on earth. Combustion of fossil fuels in industries, for power generation and in automobiles is the major source (90-95 %) of chemical air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions. Promotion of solar, wind, and hydrogen fuel technology will completely eliminate them. Chemically grown foods by agrochemicals are badly affecting human health. Some 25 million farmers are poisoned by pesticides, and some 10 to 20 thousand die every year from this. US scientists predict up to 20,000 Americans may die of cancer every year, due to low levels of residual pesticides in chemically grown foods. Hence, producing chemical-free foods by organic farming using biofertilizers and biopesticides is the only hope for civilization. Earthworms (Charles Darwin's 'friends of farmers') & its vermicompost (produced from Organic wastes) promote high crop growth and also protect from pests and diseases. Earthworms can also clean (detoxify and disinfect) polluted lands and wastewater. Potable water is a vanishing resource on Earth. Since 1950, global water use has more than tripled. Out of total water available on Earth, 97.5 % is saline. Nearly 2 % is frozen in polar icecaps & mountains. Only less than 1 % of groundwater and surface water is usable as potable water. Desalination technology to clean seawater into drinkable water is the only hope for civilization. Eco-efficiency in use of raw materials, water and energy resources is also important because the natural resources of Earth are finite, and their demand is getting infinite with an increasing population and growing consumerism all over world. Eco-efficiency will also reduce waste and pollution, and GHG emissions with economic gains for the industries. UNEP has pioneered the promotion of cleaner production philosophy. It called for all national governments for a long-term action plan to incorporate environmental concerns and problems, focusing on cleaner production into their educational curricula, especially in engineering and business management courses. Additionally, it called for the incorporation of developmental policies enacted for industries and business organizations. A joint Indo-Australian bilateral meeting on a clean development mechanism was organized in New Delhi in 2001.

Download or read book The Power of Change written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electricity, supplied reliably and affordably, is foundational to the U.S. economy and is utterly indispensable to modern society. However, emissions resulting from many forms of electricity generation create environmental risks that could have significant negative economic, security, and human health consequences. Large-scale installation of cleaner power generation has been generally hampered because greener technologies are more expensive than the technologies that currently produce most of our power. Rather than trade affordability and reliability for low emissions, is there a way to balance all three? The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies considers how to speed up innovations that would dramatically improve the performance and lower the cost of currently available technologies while also developing new advanced cleaner energy technologies. According to this report, there is an opportunity for the United States to continue to lead in the pursuit of increasingly clean, more efficient electricity through innovation in advanced technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies makes the case that America's advantagesâ€"world-class universities and national laboratories, a vibrant private sector, and innovative states, cities, and regions that are free to experiment with a variety of public policy approachesâ€"position the United States to create and lead a new clean energy revolution. This study focuses on five paths to accelerate the market adoption of increasing clean energy and efficiency technologies: (1) expanding the portfolio of cleaner energy technology options; (2) leveraging the advantages of energy efficiency; (3) facilitating the development of increasing clean technologies, including renewables, nuclear, and cleaner fossil; (4) improving the existing technologies, systems, and infrastructure; and (5) leveling the playing field for cleaner energy technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies is a call for leadership to transform the United States energy sector in order to both mitigate the risks of greenhouse gas and other pollutants and to spur future economic growth. This study's focus on science, technology, and economic policy makes it a valuable resource to guide support that produces innovation to meet energy challenges now and for the future.
