Book Parallel Justice for Victims of Crime

Download or read book Parallel Justice for Victims of Crime written by Susan Herman and published by National Center for Victims of Crime. This book was released on 2010 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year more than 20 million Americans will become victims of crime. Very few will get the help they need to get their lives back on track. Parallel Justice for Victims of Crime presents a new approach, designed to help victims rebuild their lives now being piloted from Vermont to California by police chiefs, prosecutors, corrections officials, victim advocates and community leaders. Drawing on more than 30 years of criminal justice experience, including almost 8 years as executive director of the National Center for Victims of Crime, author Susan Herman explains why justice for all requires more than holding offenders accountable it means addressing victims' three basic needs: to be safe, to recover from the trauma of the crime, and regain control of their lives. With guiding principles and practical examples of how to respond to victims of any kind of crime, Parallel Justice for Victims of Crime provides a roadmap for everyone who wants to pursue this new vision of justice.

Book Crime Victims with Developmental Disabilities

Download or read book Crime Victims with Developmental Disabilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-02-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although violent crime in the United States has declined over the past five years, certain groups appear to remain at disproportionately high risk for violent victimization. In the United States, people with developmental disabilities-such as mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and severe learning disabilities may be included in this group. While the scientific evidence is scanty, a handful of studies from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Great Britain consistently find high rates of violence and abuse affecting people with these kinds of disabilities. A number of social and demographic trends are converging that may worsen the situation considerably over the next several years. The prevalence of developmental disabilities has increased in low-income populations, due to a number of factors, such as poor prenatal nutrition, lack of access to health care or better perinatal care for some fragile babies, and increases in child abuse and substance abuse during pregnancy. For example, a recent report of the California State Council on Developmental Disabilities found that during the past decade, while the state population increased by 20 percent, the number of persons with developmental disabilities in California increased by 52 percent and the population segment with mild mental retardation doubled. Because of a growing concern among parents and advocates regarding possible high rates of crime victimization among persons with developmental disabilities, Congress, through the Crime Victims with Disabilities Awareness Act of 1998, requested that the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences conduct a study to increase knowledge and information about crimes against individuals with developmental disabilities that will be useful in developing new strategies to reduce the incidence of crimes against those individuals. Crime Victims with Developmental Disabilities summarizes the workshop and addresses the following issues: (1) the nature and extent of crimes against individuals with developmental disabilities; (2) the risk factors associated with victimization of individuals with developmental disabilities; (3) the manner in which the justice system responds to crimes against individuals with disabilities; and (4) the means by which states may establish and maintain a centralized computer database on the incidence of crimes against individuals with disabilities within a state.

Book Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Victim Participation in Justice

Download or read book Therapeutic Jurisprudence and Victim Participation in Justice written by Edna Erez and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs principles of therapeutic jurisprudence (TJ) to examine how various countries approach victim participation in criminal justice proceedings. It collects papers from a conference in Onati, Spain, that was supported by a grant from the Transcoop Programme of the Alexander Von Humboldt Foundation to study the potential impact of TJ approaches on victims. The Onati conference broke important ground by addressing victim welfare and well-being during and after participation in criminal justice proceedings and brought scholars from different disciples and nations together to share their ideas. The resulting collection brings these ideas to a wider audience in the fields of law, legal studies, sociology, psychology and criminology/victimology. The contributors are recognized researchers in their home countries and the collection provides yet another critical and empirical research contribution from a TJ perspective. "Legal professionals lobbying for victim participation would like this book. . . . Achieve[s] the goal of presenting victims of crime as a topic for further research." -- International Criminal Justice Review "Researchers of law, criminology, victimology and related subjects, law students, practitioners, judges, victims and those interested in aiding victims with their professional expertise must read this book to understand the core value of therapeutic jurisprudence. Considering the price, the quality of the editorial work, the expertise, I believe that this book should not only be a "must possession" for individuals mentioned above, but it will also be the most sought after one for all academics as well law libraries, court libraries, police libraries." -- International Journal of Criminal Justice Sciences

Book excerpt: This book covers the scope of crime victims’ suffering in the U.S., offering a history of victims and the measurement of victimization, an explanation of the victim’s role in the criminal justice process, and a recounting of the issues crime victims face as a result of crime and the criminal justice process. Doerner and Lab, both well-regarded scholars, write compellingly about how the current criminal’s justice system can be transformed into a victim’s justice system. Theory is woven together with the description of each topic, and specific examples illustrate each point. The book goes on to address the full impact of victimization, and a final section details specific types of victimization, ranging from violent crimes, including child and elder abuse, to property crime, to crime in the school and in the workplace. The authors explain how obstacles hinder the pursuit of justice, and provide significant policy and programming suggestions to render the system more victim-friendly. Appropriate for undergraduate as well as early graduate students in Victimology courses in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Sociology, and Justice Studies programs, this book offers rich pedagogical features and online student resources as well as test bank, PowerPoint lecture slides, and sample syllabus for instructors.
