Book Polarization in Heavy ion Reactions Lectures

Download or read book Polarization in Heavy ion Reactions Lectures written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determination of the polarization and spin alignment of reaction products emitted from heavy ion reactions should provide a sensitive test of reaction mechanisms. Techniques for producing both polarized beams and polarized targets are advancing rapidly. At the Oak Ridge National Laboraotry interest in this field has lead to the design and construction of a laser optically pumped polarized target by illuminating a supersonic gas jet. This target, which is mounted in the scattering chamber of a magnetic spectrometer, will be used to observe effects when deformed polarized targets are bombarded by heavy ions. Mutual research interests led to the invitation of Professor Fick, a pioneer in heavy ion polarization research who recently reviewed the status of this field, to Oak Ridge. While at ORNL he presented a series of lectures on this subject. Notes from these lectures are presented. (WHK).

Book ON THE FEASIBILITY OF POLARIZED HEAVY IONS IN RHIC

Download or read book ON THE FEASIBILITY OF POLARIZED HEAVY IONS IN RHIC written by W. W. MACKAY and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heavy nonspherical ions such as uranium have been proposed for collisions in RHIC[1]. When two such ions collide with their long axes aligned parallel to the beams (large helicities), then the plasma density might be as much as 60% higher. Since the collisions might have any orientation of the two nuclei, the alignment of the nuclei must be inferred from a complicated unfolding of multiplicity distributions. Instead, if it would be possible to polarize the ions and control the orientation in RHIC, then a much better sensitivity might be obtained. This paper investigates the manipulation of such polarized ions with highly distorted shapes in RHIC. A number of ion species are considered as possibilities with either full or partial Siberian snakes in RHIC.

Book RHIC UPGRADES FOR HEAVY IONS AND POLARIZED PROTONS

Download or read book RHIC UPGRADES FOR HEAVY IONS AND POLARIZED PROTONS written by V. LITVINENKO and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), in operation since 2000, has exceeded its design parameters. The Enhanced Design parameters, expected to be reached in 2009, call for a 4-fold increase over the heavy ion design luminosity, and a 15-fold increase over the proton design luminosity, the latter with an average polarization of 70%. Also in 2009, it is planned to commission a new Electron Beam Ion Source, offering increased reliability and ion species that cannot be supplied currently. The upgrade to RHIC 11, based on electron cooling of the beams, aims to increase the average heavy ion luminosity by an order of magnitude, and the polarized proton luminosity by a factor 2-5. Plans for an electron-ion collider eRHIC is covered in another article in these proceedings.

Book Strongly Interacting Matter under Rotation

Download or read book Strongly Interacting Matter under Rotation written by Francesco Becattini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the needs of growing community of graduate students and researchers new to the area, for a survey that covers a wide range of pertinent topics, summarizes the current status of the field, and provides the necessary pedagogical materials for newcomers. The investigation of strongly interacting matter under the influence of macroscopic rotational motion is a new, emerging area of research that encompasses a broad range of conventional physics disciplines such as nuclear physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics, where the non-trivial interplay between global rotation and spin is generating many novel phenomena. Edited and authored by leading researchers in the field, this book covers the following topics: thermodynamics and equilibrium distribution of rotating matter; quantum field theory and rotation; phase structure of QCD matter under rotation; kinetic theory of relativistic rotating matter; hydrodynamics with spin; magnetic effects in fluid systems with high vorticity and charge; polarization measurements in heavy ion collisions; hydrodynamic modeling of the QCD plasma and polarization calculation in relativistic heavy ion collisions; chiral vortical effect; rotational effects and related topics in neutron stars and condensed matter systems.

Book Polarization of Single particle States Involved in Heavy Ion Transfer Reactions

Download or read book Polarization of Single particle States Involved in Heavy Ion Transfer Reactions written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If two nuclei could be placed next to each other at a distance typical of grazing collisions, the single-particle states in each would adjust themselves to the presence of the other nucleus. They would develop an appreciable probability of being in the other nucleus, and the more weakly bound the state, the more strongly it would be polarized by the other nucleus. The solution to this situation has been realized in the two-center shell model. Whether such an adjustment can occur during a reaction depends on the ratio of the transit time to the nuclear periods of the more weakly bound nucleons. In typical low-energy experiments this ratio appears to allow for such a polarization. Clearly if it occurs, the form factor for a transfer reaction will be modified from those currently employed, which use the asymptotic single-particle states of the non-interacting separated nuclei. From the foregoing discussion it is expected that (1) for stripping reactions to a sequence of excited states in the target nucleus, the polarization effects will increase with increasing excitation (i.e., decreasing binding), (2) since transfer can take place for larger impact parameters if polarization occurs, the effect on the angular distribution will be a shift to smaller angles compared to normal DWBA, (3) the polarization effect will ultimately vanish at sufficiently high bombarding energy. Calculations so far show that the single particle states of the heavier of the reaction partners suffer the greater polarization. 2 figures.

Download or read book Physics With A High Luminosity Polarized Electron Ion Collider Proceedings Of The Workshop On High Energy Nuclear Physics Epic 99 written by Leslie C Bland and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-02-28 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Workshop on Physics with an Electron-Polarized Ion Collider (EPIC-99), jointly sponsored by the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility and Nuclear Theory Center, and the Institute for Nuclear Theory, University of Washington. It was held in Bloomington, Indiana, April 8-11, 1999. The purpose was to discuss important new physics phenomena which could be investigated with a high-luminosity asymmetric collider consisting of a beam of polarized electrons (with energy roughly 5 GeV), and a beam of polarized protons or other light ions of approximately 40 GeV energy. The Workshop brought together experts in the field who highlighted the unique potential for such a facility, and compared the prospects and challenges for this collider with present and proposed facilities around the world. The proceedings of this Workshop summarize our currently available knowledge on the physics potential for a polarized asymmetric collider. It provides a unique collection of information on the opportunities which such a facility would provide.
