Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proton polarizations were measured for the B10 (He3,p)C12 (4.43 MeV) reaction at He3 energies of 2.5 and 2.8 MeV. These measurements were made for twelve angles from 0 to 135 degrees at 2.5 MeV and for six angles from 15 to 75 degrees at 2.8 MeV. The measurements at 2.5 MeV show that the polarization reaches a minimum of -.36=.07 at theta sub lab=15 degrees where the sign of the polarization follows the Basel Convention. At larger angles the polarization fluctuates and generally decreases. It was not able to be determined whether the polarization changes sign or is zero at the back-angles. The angular dependence of the polarizations at 2.8 MeV are similar to those obtained at 2.5 MeV indicating a weak energy dependence in the energy range used. The polarizations were analyzed by scattering the protons from a plastic scintillator, using the known properties of the polarization of protons scattered by carbon. With the plastic scintillator, it was possible to reduce the backgrounds in the side detectors. This was done by identifying the scattered protons as coincidences between the 2nd scatterer and pulses of the proper energy in the side detectors. Geometrical errors obtained by machine calculations are included in the statistical errors. (Author).

Book excerpt: The polarization of protons from the He3(d, p)He4 reaction has been studied at incident deuteron energies of 1.49, 2.06, and 2.63 MeV for outgoing proton angles between. 30 deg and 150 deg in the laboratory system. The target was a He3 gas cell at 1.52 cm. Hg pressure. The polarimeter detected, in nuclear emulsions, protons scattered from He4 gas at 18 atmospheric pressure. The polarization of the scattered protons from the reaction was determined by measuring the left-right asymmetry of the elastically scattered protons, employing the well known double-scattering method. A proton polarization of - 21 +- 4% (Basel convention) was observed at a laboratory angle of 60 deg with an incident deuteron energy of 2.63 MeV at the center of the gas cell. For Ed = 2.06 MeV, the polarization shows a negative broad extreme near a laboratory, angle of 60 deg and decrease to zero for backward angles. The effective polarization of the p-He4 analyzer was derived from a careful study of the p - He4 phase shifts. A measurement of the asymmetry of protons from the reaction at resonance shows that the analyzer's inherent, asymmetry is less than 0.01. The inherent asymmetries due to finite geometry and possible misalignment of the experimental apparatus were calculated. These were found to give negligible corrections.to the measurements. (auth).
