Book The French Foreign Office and the Origins of the First World War 1898 1914

Download or read book The French Foreign Office and the Origins of the First World War 1898 1914 written by M. B. Hayne and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full scholarly history of the French Foreign Ministry - the Quai d'Orsay - in the years between the Fashoda Crisis and the First World War. In this intensively researched study, M. B. Hayne examines the bureaucratic machinery of the Quai d'Orsay, its policies, and its personnel. He explores the ideas and influence of leading diplomats and administrators, their prejudices, and their aims; and traces the often complex relationships between successive Foreign Ministers and the functionaries of the Quai d'Orsay. Dr Hayne's analysis throws much light on French policy and actions during the July Crisis, and makes a significant contribution to the debate over the origins of the First World War.

Book Count Albert de Mun Paladin of the Third Republic

Download or read book Count Albert de Mun Paladin of the Third Republic written by Benjamin F. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: De Mun led the shift of the French Right from royalism to republicanism during the first half of the Third Republic. He was an aristocrat who sought to build a popular party, a fervid Catholic who would be undermined by his church, an idealist who engaged in illegal conspiracies, and a patriot whose nation would reject his counsel until just before his death. France's conservatives were in such disarray between 1875 and 1914 that he became their dominant voice for nearly forty years. Originally published 1978. Book National Identity and Political Thought in Germany

Download or read book National Identity and Political Thought in Germany written by Mark Hewitson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This original study examines the interrelationship between the construction of national identity and the transformation of political thought in Germany before the First World War. During the decade or so before the war, the German Empire was challlenged openly by both left and right for thefirst time since the 1870s. Paradoxically, however, this pre-war crisis of Germanys system of government occurred during a period of increasing nationalism, which created a solid cross-party basis of support for the Empire as a nation-state.This pioneering study argues that Wilhelmine debates about the reform of the German Empire can only be understood in the context of a broader discussion and comparison of European and American political regimes which took place in Germany after the turn of the century. In such contemporary debatesabout a German Sonderwag, France remained a principal point of reference because French-style parliamentarism had come to be viewed as the main alternative to German constitutionalism. By analysing Wilhelmine depictions of the Third Republic, Dr Hewitson revises accepted interpretations of Germanpolitics and nationalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Maier, one of the most prominent contemporary scholars of European history, published Recasting Bourgeois Europe as his first book in 1975. Based on extensive archival research, the book examines how European societies progressed from a moment of social vulnerability to one of political and economic stabilization. Arguing that a common trajectory calls for a multi country analysis, Maier provides a comparative history of three European nations and argues that they did not simply return to a prewar status quo, but achieved a new balance of state authority and interest group representation. While most previous accounts presented the decade as a prelude to the Depression and dictatorships, Maier suggests that the stabilization of the 1920s, vulnerable as it was, foreshadowed the more enduring political stability achieved after World War II. The immense and ambitious scope of this book, its ability to follow diverse histories in detail, and its effort to explain stabilization—and not just revolution or breakdown—have made it a classic of European history.
