Book Perspectives on Igwebuike Philosophy

Download or read book Perspectives on Igwebuike Philosophy written by Chiugo C. Kanu Ph.D and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-10-18 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of African philosophy, like all great philosophical enquiries around the world, is fraught with the wrecks of words, wrenched from their original meaning, widened or narrowed, and forced into a bewildering variety of vessels that chum their ways in seas of semantic confusion. African philosophical studies has acquired and added to the many philosophical verbal transmogrifications that came originally from the Igbo of south-eastern Nigeria. In its turn, it has produced its own eccentric philosophical etymology, of which, perhaps the most striking example is Igwebuike philosophy. A reflection on Igwebuike philosophy reveals that it is a product of a meticulous and critical study of African philosophy. It is in this light that the scrupulous researcher would dissect the profound thinker behind the Igwebuike philosophy. In this book, scholars of different hues and academic endeavours have made excursus into the origin, originator, meaning and relevance of Igwebuike philosophy to contemporary African philosophical scholarship and African societies. Research shows that the brain behind Igwebuike philosophy that is gradually becoming a major part of African philosophical engagement is incontestably Prof Ikechukwu Anthony Kanu, O.S.A. Igwebuike itself is a philosophical principle that is drawn from African primordial practice of solidarity and complementarity; the works of professional African philosophers, African proverbs, African folk tales, African mythology, African symbols, African names and African songs. — Kanayo L. Nwadialor, Ph.D Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka

Book Polarity and Change in 1 Corinthians 15

Download or read book Polarity and Change in 1 Corinthians 15 written by Jeffrey R. Asher and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey R. Asher examines the themes of polarity and change in Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 15:35-57. He demonstrates that Paul uses a didactic method of argumentation to demonstrate to some of the Corinthians that there will be a resurrection of the dead. Given the nature of Paul's argument, it is quite likely that certain members of the Corinthian church denied the doctrine of the resurrection of the dead because they believed that it is impossible for a terrestrial body to be raised to the celestial realm. In addition they considered the two cosmic realms to constitute a polarity. Using a didactic method of accommodation in verses 35-49, Paul demonstrates to these Corinthian intellectuals that the doctrine of the resurrection complies with the polarity that exists between the celestial and terrestrial realms. In verses 50-57, he corrects their false conclusion regarding the resurrection by showing that the body will be changed to conform with the strictures of heavenl y existence.

Book excerpt: The forgotten book on world mythology by Alan Watts Alan Watts is today remembered as a trailblazing interpreter of Eastern philosophy, but The Two Hands of God reveals a different side of his multifaceted genius. In this ambitious work, Watts takes readers on a fascinating journey through the mythology of China, Egypt, India, the Middle East, and medieval Europe. His theme is the human experience of polarity, a condition in which opposing qualities define and complement each other. Light cannot exist without darkness, good cannot exist without evil, and male cannot exist without female. Chinese philosophy expresses this idea of universal polarity with the concepts of yin and yang, while other cultures express it through the symbolic language of myth, literature, and art. Watts illustrates the way great sages and artists across time have seen beyond the apparent duality of the universe to find a deeper unity that transcends and embraces everything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book's major parts, one on polarity and the other on analogy, introduce the reader to the patterns of thinking that are fundamental not only to Greek philosophy but also to classical civilization as a whole. As a leading classicist in his own right, Lloyd is an impeccable guide. His sophistication in adducing anthropological parallels to Greek models of polarity and analogy broadens his perspective, making him a forerunner in the study of what we are now used to calling semiotics. A striking example of Lloyd's approach is his re-examination of the dichotomy of Olympian and chthonian gods in ancient Greek world view, which surpasses the reductionist and pseudo-historical models of sky-gods and earth-goddesses that are still commonly invoked to account for polarities in Greek pantheon. "In the second part, dealing with analogy, three crucial metaphorical models for the universe turn out to be basis for a dazzlingly wide variety of scientific and philosophical perspectives. Each model is tested in the whole spectrum of Greek artistic, philosophical and scientific thought. This work is a treasure-house of insights for experts and non experts alike." --Gregory Nagy, Harvard University

Book Politics Polarity and Peace

Download or read book Politics Polarity and Peace written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The arguments within the contemporary literature paint a clear picture: popular discourse is marked with extreme partisanship and polarization, threatening democracy, tolerance, diversity, pluralism, and cooperation. Polarization simplifies and deforms language, ideas, and people. Polarization reduces the complexities of social life into an oppositional binary based on crude distinctions revolving around partial and harmful reified conceptions of self and other. Since the egocentric “us versus them” narratives catalyze conflicts which tend to violence, polarization is itself a cause of violence. The project of peace, then, is aided by the project of depolarization. But what can we do to bring about a transformation away from polarity to peace? What are the real polarities obscuring the path to peace? Is it a question of freedom versus control? Is it one of absolutism versus open-mindedness? Is it good versus evil? In a time of increasingly poisonous national politics, widening tribal polarity, and fragmented and fragmenting communities, what sense does it even make to appeal to reason, discourse, and compromise? The authors in this volume attempt to answer these and other questions relating to polarity and politics in the pursuit of peace and justice, the guiding ideals of the Concerned Philosophers for Peace and Brill's Philosophy of Peace series.
