Book excerpt: Space-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems have demonstrated great effectiveness to survey wide areas, independently of the weather conditions and the day/night cycle. One of the most exploited applications is Differential SAR Interferometry (DInSAR), and by extension, advanced multi-temporal techniques addressed as Persistent Scatterers Interferometry (PSI). These techniques provide the means to retrieve the displacement on the observed terrain surface. Taking advantage of the high coverage provided by this technology, natural and human induced phenomena may be monitored and detected in order to avoid and prevent hazardous or even catastrophic situations. A good characterization of such events is often related to the density and quality of the information delivered. In many cases, the success in the interpretation of localized surface motion phenomena relies on having as much measurements as possible. Conventional insitu techniques, when used properly, are able to provide reliable measurements. However, they are limited to their localization, and deploy a high number of instruments is not cost effective. The good characterization provided by PSI measurements is limited by the acquisition parameters and the actual scene under monitoring. SAR images sensitivity over the scene depends strongly on the geometric shape and distribution of targets. Historically, satellite SAR sensors had single polarimetric capabilities, so sensitivity over the scene was restricted to a certain antenna configuration. On the contrary, polarimetric acquisitions emit an receive with different antenna configurations, providing sensitivity to different geometries in the scenario. The launch in these later years of several satellites with polarimetric capabilities has triggered its use in several fields of application. The objective of this thesis is to evaluate the use of Polarimetric SAR (PolSAR) data for its application in the PSI framework. The extra information contained in PolSAR datasets is bound to improve the effectiveness of PSI techniques. Obtaining a higher density and quality of motion measurements will ease the detection and interpretation of terrain displacement phenomena.

The platform carried a variety of sensors; the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is widely cons- ered to be the most important. This active sensing technique provides all-day and all-weather mapping capability of considerably ?ne spatial resolution. ERS 1 and its sister system ERS 2 (launch 1995) were primarily designed for ocean app- cations, but soon the focus of attention turned to onshore mapping. Examples for typical applications are land cover classi?cation also in tropical zones and mo- toring of glaciers or urban growth. In parallel, international Space Shuttle Missions dedicated to radar remote sensing were conducted starting already in the 1980s. The most prominent were the SIR-C/X-SAR mission focussing on the investigation of multi-frequency and multi-polarization SAR data and the famous Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Data acquired during the latter enabled to derive a DEM of almost global coverage by means of SAR Interferometry. It is indispe- ableeventodayandformanyregionsthebestelevationmodelavailable. Differential SAR Interferometry based on time series of imagery of the ERS satellites and their successor Envisat became an important and unique technique for surface defor- tion monitoring. The spatial resolution of those devices is in the order of some tens of meters.

Book excerpt: The work proposed in this Master Thesis seeks to demonstrate that radar-based remote sensing techniques are as effective as the conventional geotechnical ones for the monitoring of landslides. Concretely, the work encourages the use of high-resolution X-band SAR data for the monitoring and efficient mapping of slow-moving landslides using both, orbital and Ground-Based SAR sensors. Since landslides normally occur in vegetated areas, where the number of persistent scatterers can be low due to high temporal decorrelation, the processing can be benefited of the usage of high-resolution X-band data. Working at X-band has demonstrated its effectiveness for maximizing the chances of detecting persistent scatters coming from both man-made structures and natural targets such as rocky areas or bare surfaces. In this context, the highresolution spotlight mode of TerraSAR-X represents a perfect choice since it offers a fine resolution allowing a great improvement in these applications. On the other hand, an alternative and sometimes complementary strategy is based on the use of Ground-Based SAR sensors. The landslide of study in this work is ‘El Forn de Canillo', in the Andorran Pyrenees, with well-know recent activity. In the following papers the implementation of several techniques is proposed to improve the DinSAR processing. The final objective is to compare the displacements results obtained with sliding spotlight TerraSAR-X data and those obtained with the X-band UPC's GB-SAR sensor in order to make a cross validation analysis.

Book excerpt: Mankind's way of life is the main driver of a planetary-scale change that is marked by the growing of human population's demand of energy, food, goods, services and information. As a result, it have emerged new ecological, economical, social and geopolitical concerns. In this scenario, SAR remote sensing is a potential tool that provides unique information about the Earth's properties and processes that can be used to solve societal challenges of local and global dimension. SARs, which are coherent systems that are able to provide high resolution images with weather independence, represent a suitable alternative for EO with diverse applications. Some examples of SAR application areas are topography (DEM generation with interferometry), agriculture (crop classification or soil moisture), or geology (monitoring surface deformation). In this framework, the encompassing objective of the present doctoral work has been part of the implementation and the subsequent evaluation of capabilities of two X-band SAR sensors. On the one hand, the RISKSAR-X radar designed to be operated at ground to monitor small-scale areas of observation and, on the other, the ARBRES-X sensor designed to be integrated into small UAVs. Despite its inherently dissimilar conception, the concurrence of both sensors has been evidenced along this manuscript. By taking advantage of the similarities between them, it has been possible to analogously assess both sensors to obtain conclusions. In this context, the common link has been the development of the polarimetric OtF operation mode of the RISKSAR-X, allowing this sensor to be operated equivalently to the ARBRES-X. Regarding the RISKSAR-X SAR sensor, several hardware contributions have been developed during part of this Ph.D. with the aim of improving the system performance. By endowing the system with the capability to operate in the fully polarimetric OtF acquisition mode, the relative long scanning time has been reduced. It is of great interest since the measured scatterers that present a short term variable reflectivity during the scanning time, such as moving vegetation, may degrade the extracted parameters from the retrieved data and the SAR image reconstruction. During this doctoral activity, it has been studied the image blurring, the decorrelation and the coherence degradation introduced by this effect. Furthermore, a new term in the differential interferometric coherence that takes into account the image blurring has been introduced. Concerning the ARBRES-X SAR system, one of the main objectives pursued during this Ph.D. has been the integration of the sensor into a small UAV MP overcoming restrictions of weight, size and aerodynamics of the platform. The use of this type of platforms is expected to open up new possibilities in airborne SAR remote sensing, since it offers much more versatility than the commonly used fixed wings UAVs. Different innovative flight strategies with this type of platforms have been assessed and some preliminary results have been obtained with the use of the ARBRES-X SAR system. During the course of the present doctoral work, much effort has been devoted to achieve the first experimental repeat-pass interfereometric results obtained with the UAV MP together with the ARBRES-X. Moreover, the sensor has been endowed with fully polarimetric capabilities by applying the improvements developed to the RISKSAR-X radar, which is another example of the duality between both systems. Finally, a vertical and a semicircular aperture have been successfully performed obtaining SLC images of the scenario, which envisages the capability of the UAV MP to perform tomographic images and complete circular apertures in the future. In conclusion, the UAV MP is a promising platform that opens new potentials for several applications, such as repeat-pass interferometry or differential tomography imaging with the realization of almost arbitrary trajectories.
