Energies calculated from N2(+) IN optical intensities showed close agreement with energies calculated from particle differential energy spectra for two Solar Particle Events (SPE) with markedly different energy spectra. Satellite measurements showed the 2 Nov 1969 SPE had fewer 2-MeV protons than the 7 Nov 1969 SPE but had 100 times more protons with energies greater than 10 MeV. The fact that optical emissions are produced by large fluxes of low energy protons is contrasted with riometer measurements, which have been shown to be related to fluxes of protons with energies greater than 5 to 10 MeV. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COSPAR-sponsored Symposium on Solar Particle Events was held at Boston College at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on 16, 17, and 18 June 1971. The purpose of the symposium was to present measurements and observations made during the November 1969 Solar Proton Event. This particular event was unique in that extensive solar, magnetospheric and aeronomic measurements by rocket, satellite and ground based techniques were made to provide a comprehensive picture of the phenomenology and morphology of this event. In addition, present knowledge of solar proton events and their effects on the polar ionosphere was reviewed and discussed. This included theoretical studies as well as results from investigations of other solar proton events. The symposium comprised invited as well as contributed papers. A total of 49 papers presented at the symposium are included in these proceedings.

Book excerpt: The auroral emissions in the upper atmosphere of the polar regions of the Earth are evidence of the capture of energetic particles from the Sun, streaming by the Earth as the solar wind. These auroral emissions, then, are a window to outer space, and can provide us with valuable information about electrodynamic coupling processes between the solar wind and the Earth's ionosphere and upper atmosphere. Studying the physics of these phenomena extends our understanding of our plasma universe. Ground-based remote-sensing techniques, able to monitor continuously the variations in the signatures of aurorae, in combination with in-situ satellite and rocket measurements, promise to advance dramatically our understanding of the physical processes taking place at the interface of the atmospheres of the Earth and the Sun. Decoding their complexity brings us closer to reliable prediction of communication environments, especially at high latitudes. This understanding, in turn, will help us resolve problems of communication and navigation across polar regions.

It is prepared under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union (according to aresolution adopted at the 14th General Assembly in 1970). Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts airns to present a comprehensive documentation of literature in all fields of astronomy and astrophysics. Every effort will be made to ensure that the average time interval between the date of receipt of the original literature and publication of the abstracts will not exceed eight months. This time interval is near to that achieved by monthly abstracting journals, com pared to which our system of accumulating abstracts for about six months offers the advantage of greater convenience for the user. Volume 12 contains literature published in 1974 and received before March 15, 1975; some older literature which was received late and which is not recorded in earlier volumes is also inc1uded. Begin ning with volume 11 some minor changes of our c1assification scheme have been made. We acknowledge with thanks contributions to this volume by Dr. J. Bouska, who surveyed journals and publications in the Czech language and supplied us with abstracts in English, and by the Common wealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (C.S.I.R.O.), Sydney, for providing titles and abstracts of papers on radio astronomy.
