Book excerpt: El presente texto reúne los resultados de una serie de investigaciones que forman parte de los trabajos enmarcados en el Informe FOESSA 2008, destinado a estudiar el desarrollo social español en las últimas décadas. La concreción de su estudio se centra en las políticas sociales que se dirigen prioritariamente a proteger o dar respuesta a riesgos en una dimensión concreta: falta de empleo, salud, renta o de vivienda. Por ello, como objetivo principal se centra en la identificación de vulnerabilidades y riesgos sociales a los que se enfrentan las poblaciones en situación de mayor desfavorecimiento, en procesos y trayectorias de exclusión social y el acceso y uso de los mínimos de estos sistemas por parte de poblaciones en situación de pobreza y fuerte vulnerabilidad. Por todo ello se antojan como fundamentales las reformas de las políticas sociales que desde hace más de tres décadas han seguido un itinerario de modernización de sus estructuras, extensión de su cobertura, ampliación de su campo de actuación y mejora de los niveles mínimos. Aunque sin duda, lo que más claramente recoge este estudio es que el despegue económico de la pasada década no se ha reflejado en disminución de las desigualdades sociales, ni en una apuesta por políticas sociales universales, redistribuidoras, generosas y garantistas. En definitiva, no se ha aprovechado para fortalecer las débiles estructuras de nuestro Estado de bienestar. La pregunta es si estas estructuras van a dar respuesta a las situaciones de necesidad (desempleo, pobreza, falta de vivienda, salud precaria...) que se están planteando y funcionar como un mecanismo de integración y cohesión social.

Each suggests that marriage promotion alone is not enough to ensure a happy, healthy, and prosperous future for American children who are caught up in the vortex of family change. They agree that government investments in children, however, can promote superior developmental outcomes and even potentially encourage traditional families by enlarging the pool of "marriageable" individuals for the next generation. No government action can reverse trends in family formation or return America to the historic nuclear family model. Book excerpt: On October 14-19, 1990, the 6th International Conference on the Conservation of Earthen Architecture was held in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Sponsored by the GCI, the Museum of New Mexico State Monuments, ICCROM, CRATerre-EAG, and the National Park Service, under the aegis of US/ICOMOS, the event was organized to promote the exchange of ideas, techniques, and research findings on the conservation of earthen architecture. Presentations at the conference covered a diversity of subjects, including the historic traditions of earthen architecture, conservation and restoration, site preservation, studies in consolidation and seismic mitigation, and examinations of moisture problems, clay chemistry, and microstructures. In discussions that focused on the future, the application of modern technologies and materials to site conservation was urged, as was using scientific knowledge of existing structures in the creation of new, low-cost, earthen architecture housing.
