Book excerpt: Assim, esta dissertação examina as relações entre as migrações internacionais e o desenvolvimento económico dos países emissores, bem como as implicações políticas dessas relações, em três momentos: em primeiro lugar, leva-se a cabo uma análise de tipo dedutivo, com base numa revisão crítica da literatura, dos impactes da emigração sobre o desenvolvimento dos países emissores tal como indiciado pelos seus impactes sobre os stocks dos diversos factores de produção (em particular, trabalho e várias formas de capital). Com vista a alcançar este objectivo, é primeiramente sugerido o recurso à “matriz migrações-desenvolvimento” – uma ferramenta analítica que é apresentada com o objectivo de auxiliar a classificação dos diversos efeitos da emigração sobre a capacidade produtiva, de acordo com o momento lógico do processo migratório em que ocorrem e com o factor produtivo afectado. Em segundo lugar, procede-se a uma tentativa de formalização das conclusões procedentes da discussão realizada nos capítulos anteriores com vista à apresentação de um versão preliminar de um modelo geral “migraçõesdesenvolvimento”. Finalmente, apresenta-se uma recensão de algumas das políticas mais comuns e/ou interessantes que têm vindo a ser adoptadas com o objectivo de maximizar os benefícios e minimizar os custos associados ao nexo migrações-desenvolvimento. O objectivo último deste trabalho consiste, assim, em reexaminar os contributos da literatura “migrações-desenvolvimento” a partir de uma perspectiva especificamente macroeconómica, de modo a contribuir para uma melhor compreensão de um dos mais cruciais e controversos aspectos da globalização.

Bodies on the Front Lines situates recent performances and protests within legacies of homegrown gender and sexual rights activism from the South. Performances—enacted in public spaces and intimate venues, across national borders, and through circulating hashtags and digital media—play crucial roles in the elaboration, auto-theorization, translation, and reception of feminist, queer, and trans activism. Movements such as Argentina's NiUnaMenos (Not One Less) have brought masses of protesters and “artivists” on the streets of major cities in Latin America and beyond to denounce gender violence and demand gender, sexual, and reproductive rights. The volume’s contributors draw from rich legacies of theater, performance, and activism in the region, as well as decolonial and intersectional theorizing, to demonstrate the ways that performance practices enable activists to sustain their movements. The chapters engage diverse perspectives from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, transnational Central America, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Mexico. Rather than taking an approach that simplifies complexities among states, Bodies on the Front Lines takes seriously the geopolitical stakes of examining Latin America and the Caribbean as a heterogeneous site of nations and networks. In chapters covering this wide geographical area, leading scholars in the fields of theater and performance studies showcase the aesthetic, social, and political work of performance in generating and fortifying gender and sexual activism in the Americas.

Taking a fresh look at Latin American and Caribbean society over the course of more than half a millennium, this book explores how the omission of children from the region's historiography may in fact be no small matter. Children currently make up one-third of the population of Latin America and the Caribbean, and over the centuries they have worked, played, worshipped, committed crimes, and fought and suffered in wars. Regarded as more promising converts to the Christian faith than adults, children were vital in European efforts to invent loyal subjects during the colonial era. In the contemporary economies of Latin America and the Caribbean—where 23 percent of people live on a dollar per day or less—the labor of children may spell the difference between survival and starvation for millions of households. Minor Omissions brings together scholars of history, anthropology, religion, and art history as well as a talented young author who has lived in the streets of a Brazilian city since the age of nine. After discussing violence against women as a case study in order to understand the current state of social policies, the authors then describe how the “place” and “value” of education have become central features to social policies in order to disband conflict. Finally, they explain the emergence of a social phenomenon in the last sixteen years in Latin America and particularly Argentina: the compensatory consumption system and the resulting emergence of the “assisted citizen.”
