The author, LaVerne Byrd Smith at that time, was a Professor of Education at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia and supervisor of student teachers. She was delighted to see classrooms she visited come alive with artwork, crafts, reports, discussions, and other learning experiences including questions and research about whales and about Virginia's James River. This event and student enthusiasm motivated Byrd Smith, a devotee of Dr. Seuss, to create in rhyme, a fictionalized version of the true story. Pokey The Playful Whale was first published in 1980 in Popcorn Magazine. An un-illustrated version was published in an anthology of Byrd Smith's poems entitled, Poetry for Growing: Kindergarten Through "Kollege" published in 2004 by First Books Library (now known as AuthorHouse). Illustrations by Les Harper bring Pokey alive again.
