In these, Reeve uses the newest technologies of the early 1900s, which were nothing short of revolutionary for the time. The title story for example features the use of special inks, some appearing and others disappearing in sunlight, making the pursuit of a murderer incredibly difficult for the professor. Each story offers a fascinating look at life in the early 20th century, as well as being loaded with adventure, action, and mystery. Arthur Benjamin Reeve (1880-1936) was a Brooklyn born mystery author. He studied at Princeton and then went on to New York Law School. He is sometimes referred to as "The American Sherlock Holmes", having created the enduring characters of Professor Craig Kennedy and reporter Walter Jameson. He wrote numerous detective novels, often based on real cases of the time, such as the Lindbergh baby kidnapping and the William Desmond Taylor murder.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In celebration of our 20th anniversary, Poisoned Pen Press has commissioned original short stories from thirty-five of its authors, past and present. Some names will be immediately recognizable to mystery aficionados-Kerry Greenwood with her Phryne Fisher mysteries, now also a popular television program, or Laurie R. King who has charmed Sherlockians worldwide with her beloved Mary Russell series. Some have gone on to big deals with the big leagues-Carolyn Wall, whose debut novel, Sweeping Up Glass, was purchased by Penguin Random House, or James Sallis, whose novella, Drive, was critically acclaimed and made into major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling. Several have been translated into other languages with foreign publishers. Some authors have been on hiatus, and are writing something new for the first time in years. Most have remained comfortably ensconced with us here at the Press, enjoying a modicum of fame and a steadily growing base of loyal readers who eagerly anticipate their next-in-series. This anthology celebrates our authors, their talent, and their diversity. Some have chosen to feature characters well-established within their own series-protagonists, supporting cast, and even one villain-turned-hero. Others have gone in totally different directions, inventing new characters and going dark or cozy for the first time, with chilling and delightful results. Yet as different as these authors and their stories are, they all share a common passion for finely crafted tales of crime and murder. From Greece to Italy, India to Australia, Great Britain to Canada; from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest and New Mexico to the Savannah low country, they are a community Bound by Mystery, and we are proud to present their short fiction to you for the first time ever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pages Gone By is more than just Erin, Ohio’s only used book store. It’s also a favorite meeting place for writers and readers. And early one morning, it becomes the scene of a murder when a body is found in the romance section. Is the steamy novel, Love’s Dark Secret, clutched in the victim’s handa clue to the killer? Or is it more significant that the murder weapon was a statue of the iconic Maltese Falcon of film noir fame? As polymath mystery writer Sebastian McCabe and sardonic sidekick Jeff Cody try to unmask the murderer of a friend, they get more help than they need from a talk show psychologist and a group of would-be mystery writers with more imagination than deductive skills. But only they know that one suspect has big secrets to hide – secrets that Mac and Jeff hope don’t have to be revealed. An homage to the Golden Age of detective fiction, the witty and suspense Bookmarked for Murder once again shows why novelist and screenwriter Bonnie MacBird called Dan Andriacco “a master of mystery plotting.”

Download or read book The Poisoned Pen Classic Reprint written by Arthur B. Reeve and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poisoned Pen I've been retained by Senator Adrian Willard, he called from his room, as I was busy packing in mine. The Willard family believe that that young Dr. Dixon is the victim of a conspiracy - or at least Alma Willard does, which comes to the same thing, and - well, the senator called me up on long-distance and offered me anything I would name in reason to take the case. Are you ready? Come on, then. We've simply got to make that train. As we settled ourselves in the smoking-compart ment of the Pullman, which for some reason or other we had to ourselves, Kennedy spoke again for the first time since our frantic dash across the city to catch the train. Now let us see, Walter, he began. We've both read a good deal about this case in the papers. Let's try to get our knowledge in an orderly shape before we tackle the actual case itself. Book A Lot Like Eve

Download or read book A Lot Like Eve written by Joanna Jepson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable personal insight into female body image, spirituality and the defiance of cultural expectations. Joanna Jepson was born with a facial deformity that led to her being mercilessly bullied through childhood and adolescence whilst a strict evangelical upbringing imposed further challenges. Reconstructive facial surgery and a religious meltdown left her unrecognizable and disorientated, and triggered a search for identity and belonging. After ordination, a spell in the cloisters of a Welsh convent and a burst of headline-hitting fame in relation to the cleft palate abortions in the news a few years ago, Joanna became the first Chaplain to the London College of Fashion, with unique opportunities to explore the world of self-image. Not just an autobiography, A Lot Like Eve exposes the cultural idols and preoccupations that hook so many women into trying to prove that they are worthwhile in the way that the world expects. Like the first (metaphorical) woman, Eve, we too are still trying to pretend that we are wonderfully adorned by our own kind of fig-leaves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Was the assassination of one of America’s most beloved presidents an accident? That is the shocking argument put forth by acclaimed historian James Reston, Jr. Based on years of research and interviews, this revelatory new book makes the case that Texas Governor John Connally, not President John F. Kennedy, was the intended target of Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald's motive was personal, not political. After he attempted to defect to the Soviet Union, his military discharge was changed from honorable to dishonorable. The proud ex-Marine protested directly to fellow Texan Connally, then Secretary of the Navy, and received a classic bureaucratic brush-off. From that day on, Oswald began nursing a deep, even murderous grudge. Reston masterfully charts the path Oswald took toward that fated moment in Dallas, his hatred of the governor driving him to purchase a mail-order rifle, position himself in the Texas School Book Depository building, and attempt to settle his score with Connally. There was no conspiracy. There was Lee Harvey Oswald, a mail-order gun, and a missed shot. Marshaling all the available evidence – some of it never before seen – Reston will change the way we understand this epochal event: In one of American history’s most tragic ironies, President John F. Kennedy was as an accidental victim on November 22, 1963. With nearly 30 photos, the book may take a few minutes to download over 3G or slower connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combating the Hydra explores structural as well as occasion-specific state violence committed by the early modern Habsburg Empire. The book depicts and analyzes attacks on marginalized people “maladjusted” of all sorts, women “of ill repute,” “heretic” Protestants, and “Gypsies.” Previously uncharted archival records reveal the use of arbitrary imprisonment, coerced labor, and deportation. The case studies presented provide insights into the origins of modern state power from varied techniques of population control, but are also an investigation of resistance against oppression, persecution, and life-threatening assaults. The spectrum of fights against debasement is a touching attestation of the humanity of the outcasts; they range from mental and emotional perseverance to counterviolence. A conversation with the eminent historian Carlo Ginzburg concludes the collection by asking about the importance of memorizing horrors of the past.

Book excerpt: Murder Among Supervillains As a professor of popular culture in his day job, amateur sleuth Sebastian McCabe knows a bit about superheroes, supervillains, and the various graphic novel universes. But that's not much help when murder strikes at the Tri-State Comic Book Expo. Potential suspects number in the thousands, including some A-list Hollywood actors as well as comic book professionals and a collector. It all begins with Erin, Ohio-based artist-writer Parker Williams, creator of the superhero Red Falcon, being accused of plagiarizing the character of his newest supervillain, Queen Bee. Mac and best friend Jeff Cody take a special interest because they know Williams from another case. When accuser Gavin Frost-Pierson and Williams both shows up at the Expo, tensions run high. Before long, McCabe and Cody are dealing with murder in an elevator and a dying message that leads to a search for the mysterious woman in red-or perhaps not a woman at all-at an event in which many participants are costumed for cosplay. And in this third year of COVID, some individuals are un-costumed participants still wearing masks as well. Then again, not all masks are obvious. Who has a murderous heart? And what role does a forged comic book cover play? When a suspect flees police after the second murder, Police Chief Oscar Hummel is convinced he has the murderer. Sebastian McCabe is certain his old friend is wrong but has a hard time coming up with an alternative theory.
