Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Points on Buying a Horse: Showing the Means by Which Unsoundness and Faults May Be Discovered; Also the Tricks and Methods Frequently Used to Effect Sales The horse is a noble and useful animal, yet very little is known about him, as regards good and bad points, by the average person. In consequence, when buying for the first time, the buyer must either enlist the services of a friend who is a judge of a horse, employ a veterinary surgeon, or blindly bid in a horse at auction on general appearances and trust to luck that he will turn out satisfactorily. Such persons seem to forget or entire ly disregard the fact that horses when offered for sale, especially by dealers, are brought to the best possible condition, perhaps having been doctored for weeks prior to sale, and possibly when they pass into their owners' hands will steadily decline and be almost useless. Book excerpt: 'Buying a Horse' is an essay sharing several anecdotes on buying horses by William Dean Howells. He begins by saying that if one has enough money, there seems no reason why one should not go and buy such a horse as he wants. A friend of his proceeded to do so: He was about removing from Charlesbridge, where he had lived many happy years without a horse, farther into the country, where there were charming drives and inconvenient distances, and where a horse would be very desirable, if not quite necessary. But as a horse seemed at first an extravagant if not sinful desire, he began by talking vaguely round, and rather hinting than declaring that he thought somewhat of buying. The professor to whom he first intimated his purpose flung himself from his horse's back to the grassy border of the sidewalk where my friend stood, and said he would give him a few points. "In the first place don't buy a horse that shows much daylight under him, unless you buy a horse-doctor with him; get a short-legged horse; and he ought to be short and thick in the barrel,"—or words to that effect. "Don't get a horse with a narrow forehead: there are horse-fools as well as the other kind, and you want a horse with room for brains. And look out that he's all right forward."

Book excerpt: Prior to joining the Western Horseman staff, Fran Devereux Smith, an associate editor with the magazine, spent a number of years training horses and giving riding instruction. In writing First Horse, she relied on her teaching experience with riders of all ages and her work as a 4-H horse project leader. Fran has a broad-based background in the equine industry. A lifelong horsewoman, she grew up trail riding and showing horses regionally -- primarily in reining, western pleasure, horsemanship, and barrel racing, with some experience in halter and showmanship. A high school rodeo competitor, Fran also was a member of her intercollegiate rodeo team, winning a regional barrel racing championship and qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo in that event and goat tying. Along the way, she was named Miss Rodeo Arkansas and won a girls rodeo association all-around title that same year. Since then, Fran has earned a state Quarter Horse association reining championship, showed in hunt-seat classes, and team penned. She has ridden trails in 20 states, worked some cattle along the way, driven a wagon team from time to time, and served as an officer or board member for several equine organizations. Book jacket.
